Why can't Nokia N95 (and other NSeries) users watch iPlayer via Flash at the BBC website any more?
We could until a few months ago, but then you changed something. Yes these smartphones are capable of playing embedded Flash movies, which is why it did work... once upon a time.
Also, when will the much hyped iPlayer for Nokia N95 application become available? More on that here: http://www.brandrepublic.com/News/829...

Inappropriate? This did work not too long ago, but now for some reason all the videos throw up an "unable to play clip" error in Realplayer.
The n95 has Flash lite, why doesn't the iplayer use that any more?
I’m confused and irritated
-
I think they're deliberately disabling iPlayer when they detect Webkit/Safari in the user-agent line. The latest update allowed embedded videos in the browser (Jan/Feb 08), and iPlayer worked... briefly; but then they changed something. -
Inappropriate?I suppose not all n95 users have v21 of the software, and so they won't all have the same software. iPlayer will probably therefore need some sort of RealPlayer-reliant feature. Just a shame no-one at the BBC is giving any sort of clue as to if/when this is being sorted out.
Please let us know!
I’m beyond it
-
I disagree. If people don't have the v21 firmware, they can just upgrade. Hell, they should have done that for many other reasons long ago. iPlayer should work with embedded Flash Lite. I'd like to know why it doesn't any more. I thought the BBC was all about accessibility for its license payers? It seems they're only developing for the latest overhyped gadgets (iPhone) instead of far more popular phones (the N95) and the most dominant mobile operating system in Europe (SymbianOS) though. -
Inappropriate?iPhone effectively means a huge marketing opportunity for the BBC and other websites. You must understand the logic behind it, although I agree all the way that there are far more n95 users than iPhone users. The BBC should therefore concentrate a little more on them!
One thing I don't agree with though is the business of upgrading to v21, bearing in mind that not all networks even offer upgrades to the latest version, and most users either won't want to debrand their phone, scared that it may break, or won't have the technical knowledge to do so.
I don't see why the BBC can't overcome this though, and just allow users to choose which stream to receive or similar, as you say it used to work, until the BBC blocked access for some reason!
I’m exasperated!
-
Hey. Thanks for the food for thought. I appreciate your opinions. Regarding the iPhone marketing opportunity: I don't believe a publicly funded body should be indulging in that kind of thing. The iPlayer should be about accessibility, not hype, and I really think that means recognition for SymbianOS. Also, which British networks haven't provided a v21 firmware yet? I'm curious. I know Three, T-Mobile and Vodafone have. I'm not sure I'd like to be using an earlier major revision, given the battery issues that were resolved. -
Inappropriate?Hmm, according to Nokia site, latest version for N95 is 21.0.016 for O2 and Vodafone, T-Mobile is 20.0.015, and only 13.0.003 for Orange!
I'm sure most users won't have updated it though ("it's just a phone")!
I wouldn't mind so much that the BBC haven't released an N95 specific version, but that they brand the whole iPlayer as 'mobile', yet it's really only iPhone compatible, but worse than that, it used to work and they've *removed* the functionality! They only need to check their logs to see that N95 browsers have accessed the site.
I’m lobotomized

Inappropriate?Good news for N96 users:
"Users of the Nokia N96 are to be among the first with the ability to run the BBC's iPlayer on their mobile phones. From 1 October a purpose-built application will be available to download via the BBC website and will also be pre-loaded on some handsets."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology...
Shame it's still only restricted to a specific model though. -
Inappropriate?Oh great. You've developed iPlayer for a phone that nobody owns yet, and that costs over £530 off-contract. This doesn't address the original question.
The BBC has said it's creating a version of iPlayer for the N95. At what stage of development is this product? When can we expect to see it?
Or is the iPlayer more an exercise in marketing third-party commercial products than providing accessibility to license payers using extremely popular, existing technology?
I can feel a letter to The Grauniad coming on.
I’m angry
-
Inappropriate? You know, to add more to this: Why the heck isn't BBC TV available over 3G anyway? You offered some channels via 3 UK (and some other providers) before recently withdrawing them. Why? Content delivered over 3G is far more accessible than targetting individual handsets; hell you don't even need a smartphone to view 3G TV.
I had assumed that an iPlayer for the N95 would work on other N-Series handsets too because they have the same operating system, but no, apparently you're only singling out the latest fashionable handsets sought after by executives at BBC HQ. A few months ago it was the iPhone, and quelle surprise, now it's the N96.
I can't tell you how much this move stinks Sheila Allen.
What the hell is the point of asking the BBC to do anything, when its solutions are designed to promote very specific third-party products?
I’m furious
-
If it *would* why are they only talking about the N96?
I can think of some reasons right off the bat though. The N96 has a more recent version of SymbianOS, and a heck of a lot more memory. I also get the impression from the news articles that it won't be available for download, but preinstalled on the N96.
So, if they have designed the iPlayer exclusively for the N96, then it's quite possibly incompatible with other N-Series phones. -
Inappropriate?I've decided to stop following this issue. I'm feeling more ignored than satisfied, so I don't see the point. I've decided to write letters to The Guardian and The Times instead, questioning the poor accessibility of the iPlayer, and the BBC's tendency to develop for up-and-coming, must-have gadgets, instead of products already being used by license payers.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Yes you can get it installed and working (version 1.5 Beta) by following the instructions in the comments here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/i...
You need to download iPlayer.wgz from http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/i... and just edit the .js file insde (comments at above site describe how to do it)
Not sure if Suresh has the iplayer.wgz set up for N95 but if he/she does then download it form their site and install without having to worry about editing any files!
I’m ok
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, this has been around for a while now, the last version I downloaded didn't work, so had to install version 1.0 rather than 1.5 (I think)...
I’m happy, but actually rather unconvinced that I need streaming BBC on my phone...
