Deploying a release is not reliably fast enough
Now it's taking longer to deploy a set of 5-10 changes than it is to do them.

Inappropriate?I realize I'm not the first to notice this issue, but deploying time-sensitive changes seems like russian roulette in reverse. You only get lucky one time in six.
Otherwise, Beanstalk is a wonderful service, and I do realize you consider deployments "beta", but deploys are definitely not ready for prime time.
I was going to use it to deploy a client site this afternoon, about a gig's worth of mostly small files, but I will spare everyone some heartache and just do an FTP upload from an svn export on my desktop.
I had high hopes. bleh.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Hi Jamie,
We had some high load today with our deployments. While they are usually pretty fast, sometimes everyone decides to deploy at once and it backs up. We are going to add another server to handle deployments and integration tools, since the volume is steadily going up.
We're also pretty close to releasing an update that will make our deployments a bit "smarter" on the server side. We'll post an update on our blog soon.

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
Thanks for your response.
I am sure running this kind of service is a real challenge. The trouble for you, and for us customers, is that Beanstalk's value lies precisely in its handling of critical parts of a company's work.
When even one part of the service it is unavailable, even for a short while, it's inevitably an unacceptable lapse for someone. Today that was me.
If I'm not mistaken, the problems you're having are the very ones that have driven developers in great droves away from shared hosting and toward VPS and dedicated hosting; reliable access to resources is not optional.
I am assuming that all beanstalk customers are essentially shared hosting customers. May I humbly inquire if there is any plan to offer VPS-level plans for a price?
That's what Slicehost and EngineYard are doing, after all.
Anyhow, your customer service and support has been very prompt, knowledgeable, transparent, courteous and professional, which is, in itself, a huge accomplishment, so kudos there.
Jamie

Inappropriate?Jamie, we have been considering this. For now we need to make sure that we can grow into the number of accounts that sign up each day. This strategy will help us overall, whether it is VPS-like or shared.
Thanks,
Chris
