Inappropriate?iStat Menus 2.0 will support Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard". iStat Menus 2.0 is due well before the official release of Snow Leopard.
-
Maybe it will support Snowy, but now we have .113 beta release and still lots of problems with System UI Server! It's enough to click on the clock filed in the manu bar and everything at least hang up or crash the entire UI Server. You have to go and manually kill the process from the shell or Activity monitor. Do you know that's a problem with iStat Menus. Every beta update has the same problem - click on the clock in menu and crash! -
Inappropriate? We'll update this topic when more info about iStat Menus 2.0 is released.
-
Any hope of a beta of 2.0 ? Not much time left before SL releases and some of us miss our iStat Menu! -
Inappropriate?Yeah, there's a good chance of a beta. We'll announce it via Twitter or via MacTalk.com.au (we have a forum section for Bjango on MacTalk).
Follow @bjango to be notified when the beta is available. -
Inappropriate?I need iStat Menus 2.0
Please hurry up ;-)
Its horrible without iStat ^^ -
Inappropriate? We're working as fast as we can on it. Please keep in mind that Snow Leopard hasn't been released yet, so only developers should be running it ;)
-
It is released now.. -
I got this comment forwarded to me by e-mail and thought it meant 2.0 was released. Curse you Disconnect ;-) -
You and me both. -
Inappropriate?I'll keep my fingers crossed since it comes out on Friday. So, when I upgrade to Snow Leopard ON friday, do I have to 'deactivate' iStat 1.3 before commencing the upgrade? Will it cause any sort of conflict if I upgrade then boot up the first time? I'm assuming it simply won't do squat until I DL iStat 2.0 but I thought I'd ask anyhow. :)
-
You can upgrade to Snow Lepoard safely. iStat Menus just won't work until you upgrade it to 2.0. -
On my MacBook Pro when I upgraded, iStat Menus 1.3 would attempt to startup and crash over and over and over, I could barely use my MacBook until I managed to get the uninstaller and run it, so for my other macs I un-installed it before updating. -
Inappropriate?Worst case scenario would be that you'd have to use the uninstaller. Instructions on how to do that:
Uninstalling iStat Menus:
Simply open up the iStat menus pref pane in System Preferences, click on the General section, then click uninstall to launch the uninstaller.
If you can’t open the pref pane for some reason, you can follow the steps below to run the uninstaller.
- Download iStat menus from islayer.com/apps/istatmenus/.
- Double click the ZIP file to open it.
- Control-click or right-click iStat menus Installer and choose Show Package Contents.
- Navigate to Contents/Resources/.
- Double click iStat menus Uninstaller to run the uninstaller.
-
Thankfully, it just... didn't work. No issues. No need to run the uninstaller. It was non-problimatic. Look... I don't mean to sound like a douche here, so I'm going to say this two ways... One, your original message says it'll be out well before the launch of Snow Kitty. But... it didn't happen.
Now, this is what I'm trying to say here - okay, you might not have AS MANY people download Istat menus if it ain't free... but c'mon... I'd pay a buck for it. Hell, I'd pay TWO dollars for it. If you have twenty thousand people using it, you're doing PRETTY WELL. Yeah, then you gotta pay taxes on it and whatever... but I know you guys are probably slammed with requests, now. What about all the people who aren't smart enough to find the "get satisfaction" page? There are tons of people who are moping because of istat's incompatibility with snow kitty.
Okay, let's get down to brass tacks, here... HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED to finish this project in a timely (one week or less) fashion? I'll get out my check book, because I know a lot of people aren't able to donate. Hell, I'll go one step further and ask how much I have to donate so that you'll make an iStat widget for Windows7 / Vista so I can use it in BootCamp. I crave my little icons! My bar is NAKED without them!
-Ken Weaver -
Inappropriate?Well, I just got my copy of Snow Leopard. Any chance of an iStat Menu update soon-ish? :)
-
Inappropriate? Is there an option of doing what Agile did since 1Password isn't Gold Master yet for Snow Leopard. They opened up their Beta since 1P 2.X doesn't work so well in SL....
-
Inappropriate?Hello,
Snow Leopard is out, iStat Menus still does not support Snow Leopard - it's a pitty, because this little app is so useful, that is really hard to live w/o it! C'mon guys, update iStat Menus!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I upgraded my 5 mac's as well, I feel completely naked with out it. iStat Pro is an option, but I hate widget's, as their not there all the time. With iStat Menu's it's there all the time for me to see. And activity monitor just doesn't do it either, it's way too big.
I’m sad and frustrated
-
Inappropriate? We're getting very close now. Sorry it wasn't out before Snow Leopard.
-
Inappropriate? With a few of the above posts asking you to hurry up i'm just gonna post to say iStat menu is a fantastic program and I don't mind waiting for you guy's to take some time making sure the new version is the best it can possibly be. It must have been a little frustrating for you with Apple releasing it ahead of their proposed timeframe.
Keep up the good work and i'm waiting (patiently!) for version 2.0
I’m thankfully anticipating
-
I didn't post this comment so I could get your approval Zaphon, all I was doing was saying thank you to bjango for giving us a great app. Also I don't quite understand why you feel the need to quote build numbers either, anyone who reads macrumors could give you the build number of the GM.
I could understand if you paid for the app to be a little frustrated that it is not compatible but it is a little small minded to complain about something that you get free. Someone has obviously put time and effort for no real return to provide you with something useful and all you can do is complain. Just be patient -
Inappropriate?I just wanted to say thanks for a great app. I look forward to it working again with snow leopard.
Keep up the great work guys! -
Inappropriate?I also would like to praise and say thank you to the team at iSlayer. All the complaints I see regarding a FREE app are unbelievable. I understand frustration but I don't understand ridiculing a company for something you get for free.
-
Inappropriate?I think most of the frustration comes from it *being* free. We'd all happily pay for this fantastic app, and that gives everyone a warm fuzzy feeling inside that it will be supported without kickback.
I'm happy waiting, but I'd rather pay and get the updates faster, that's all.
Great app, guys.
I’m confident
-
I'm right there with you, I'd happily pay for this app. I have the iphone app, but the only thing I really used it for is now gone (as honestly the only time I went into it was when things were getting slow, and the first thing I would do is Free Memory). Now 2+ days with out iStat Menus (which was the only app I had that didn't work with Snow Leopard luckily) and I'm wondering how I ever worked with out it. -

-
I'm guessing not at this point (it's already out in beta), but I donated none the less. In a way I would have rather paid directly for the app, to support it versus the whole team, but in reality, no matter what, it still goes to the company, and get's divided out appropriately. *shrugs*. -
Inappropriate?Sorry we didn't make the Snow Leopard release. Apple caught us out by releasing early. We're putting everything behind this... the fact that iStat Menus is donationware doesn't mean we give it any less attention. We're a very small team, so please hang in there.
As others have said, iStat Menus 2.0 is in private beta right now, and it's all going well.
-
Inappropriate?I'm still waiting for the release, in the meantime I did a donation. Hope it helps :-)
-
Inappropriate?glad to hear you guys are working on it... patiently waiting.... .... .... ....
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I am anxiously awaiting iStat Menus for Snow Leopard. I never realized how essential it was until it was gone :( Anyway, can you give us an estimate as to when it'll be released?
P.S: I'm about to donate. I forgot that we could do that :)
I’m eagerly awaiting
-
Inappropriate?I don't think they do estimates haha, 'marc', who I'm guessing is the correspondent responding here, gave the following reply on the forums when asked to define "soon":
"Soon = when we're ready.
We don't work to any deadlines for our software and we try not to release anything that's not ready. We really are working hard on it though, so soon should equal weeks, not months. It's a big and complex app though, and the next update is rather large and hopefully very impressive."
I mean i see where there coming from better to surprise people when it comes out then give a deadline they could be late on.
Even though I love the App and I'm anxious for the release, I know there working hard on it and I'm sure they appreciate the donations!
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate? The current estimate is "days" :)
And yep, we're still working hard on it! -
DAYS! JOY! -
Inappropriate?Good news, Im lost without it.

Inappropriate?I, too, would like to say BIG THANKS to the whole team at Bjango/iSlayer! I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and noticed that iStat Menus stopped working... That's when I realized how much I love and depend that that collection of tools.
Keep up the great work, guys, you ROCK!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I'm going to add that I too feel naked without my iStats menu!
And to be fair, Apple released Snow Leopard a month early, so it probably caught the iSlayer folks by surprise, just as it caught Agile Web Solutions (1Password).
I can't wait for the 2.0 update. Thanks!
I’m excited
-
I just want to clear the air of some things.
First I love iStat Menus, I have now donated (probably 2-3x what it's worth, but as I said I love it), and am suffering without it. I have found multiple links to the "unofficial" beta now, but I refuse to download them, I will wait for a public beta, or an "official" beta before I think about putting it on my macs.
But, to those who keep saying that the release of Snow Leopard caught them by surprise, I disagree. Snow Leopard was announced on June 8, 2008 at WWDC (that's 14 months ago by my calendar). It has been available for download for the majority of the time since than to ADC Premier and Select Members (those who actually pay Apple).
It was announced that Snow Leopard would be available for purchase in September (not that it would be released than, that's never what they said, it was a carefully crafted quote). The GM version of Snow Leopard was made available via ADC around 8/11/2009, and on 8/16/2009 the rumors started floating around of an August 28th, 2009 release date on all the big sites.
As I have said before, I upgraded to Snow Leopard last Friday on release. I had one major app that didn't work, that was iStat Menus. All my other apps either just worked, or I received updates in the past few weeks with "Snow Leopard Fixes/Tweaks/Optimizations." As people were prepared, and had been working with Snow Leopard for quite some time.
So in closing, I realize this is a Free App, but to even remotely think that Snow Leopard snuck up on them is a tad silly, they would have had to have been living in a dark isolated world to not have known it was coming.
P.S. I still love iStat Menus and can't wait for the release, just want to clear up some misconceptions. -

The main difference between these "other apps" and iStat menus is that this App "communicates" allot with the "Core OS" and well this changed allot after snow leopard, iStat Menus can't merely be run in 32 bit mode like the majority of the apps that you speak of that simply worked after snow leopard. It for the most part had nothing to do with the so called "prepared people" it was just the nature of this OS update for the most part not effect most of these apps.
Not trying to flame you or anything but you obviously don't understand the topic well enough to truly comment on it.
I’m amused

Thanks for the amusing post. Unfortunately you're wrong, I know plenty about the problem, heck I even know how to get iStat Menus 1.3 working in Snow Leopard (you can either strip the x86_64 version of the SystemUIServer from it's binary (not recommended), or you can set it to run i386 (32-bit mode) as default, than logout/login). So while you may think I know nothing about it, you are very wrong. You shouldn't assume what others know. I just got sick of sitting by and listening to people act like snow leopard coming out was some kind of big surprise, when it wasn't. -
Inappropriate?"you can either strip the x86_64 version of the SystemUIServer from it's binary"
Probably the funniest thing I've heard in a long time, you are correct there are ways to make it kinda work but i don't think that's what there going for. Another thing they were waiting on i believe is the the menus cracker update for snow leopard and the devs there i don't believe had access to the pre-release of snow SL. But anyway you are way over simplifying the change that occurred to the SystemUIServer. -
I never said that's what they were going for, you simply said I have no idea what's going on. I'm sure you wouldn't have believed me when I told you I'm a software developer, so I didn't bother saying it. I'm sure you still won't, I don't develop for the Mac directly, as the software I write runs on UNIX boxes, but I work from a Mac, even testing on my Mac. But ultimately it runs on a UNIX server (FreeBSD to be exact) in a Colo across town from me.
As for MenuCracker updates, looking at SourceForge, there were patches available as far back as 4/18/2009 to get it working. The 2.0 version is in the iStat Menu Beta and is also being used by other apps that are working with Snow Leopard as well (for example MenuMeters).
And if you go back and read what I said, I never said anything about it being simple. I was simply saying and I'm still saying it, Snow Leopard was no surprise. It's been known about for 14 months. People have been working on it for many months now (evidenced by the ticket on SourceForge for MenuCracker back on 4/18/2009 where a developer submitted a patch to make it work with 10.6 (that is over 4+ months ago)), so saying it snuck up on them due to an early release still remains an invalid statement. -
Inappropriate?I think Zaphon hit the nail on the head right there. It's been about a year now since Apple start enumerating what Snow Leopard was going to look like, and I believe close to that long since it was acknowledged Apple would be closing security holes in Core services.
The iStat folks produce a great product, and have obviously been busy as bees working on other products, so I'm just surprised the ball got dropped on Snow Leopard support. -
Inappropriate? My main gripe with your original comment was that you had said all your "other apps" work fine and that they were prepared ... etc. I guess my point is and I believe you can at least admit that most of the other apps that worked when snow leopard came out weren't as effected by the Changes in the Core Os/SystemUIServer as iStat was and thus it making it compatible wasn't a walk in the park.
-
I was only saying that as an example. I had quite a few apps that did indeed get updates a week or two before Snow Leopard arrived that don't work without these updates (Crossover Games for example). I have never doubted that there was work to be done, just saying it could have been done months ago. But it's clear their a small group, they've been hyper focused on other apps (I would assume iPhone apps primarily since they make money from those), and they thought they had more time to get this done. As I said before, I love the app, I don't doubt the new version will be great. All I have been trying to say is there's no need to act like Snow Leopard just dropped out of the sky unexpected, as it didn't. -
Inappropriate?Seriously, I'm willing to bet that there are Apple employees who use iStat.
Seriously. No, really. How do you think I found out about this application? My friend at the Apple Store was like, "You need iStat menus, Growl and Flip4Mac WMV! They're crucial, man. Trust me. Everyone at the store uses 'em!"
Needless to say, I use all three.
So, since this update is "days" away, I've been watching every single day, lol. This thread is going to become a ghost town the day 2.0 is released, lol.
I’m still waiting patiently! :D
-
Inappropriate? It's true that Snow Leopard betas have been around for quite some time. It's also true that we've been busy on other projects (we can't spend *all* our time on free apps... keep in mind this is what we do full time).
However, the main reason iStat Menus 2.0 missed the Snow Leopard release is because we were so close to finishing a massive update to the app that we thought we could get it out in time. So rather than releasing iStat Menus 1.31 or whatever that was identical to iStat Menus 1.3, but with SL support, we decided to try and get version 2 out.
We missed the 28th, but we're still confident we'll be releasing within days.
So all going well, we're talking about one week without iStat Menus for users who installed SL on day one. It's not what we wanted, but when you see version 2, you *might* be thankful for the choice we made.
I’m Glad people care enough about our apps to post here
-
This is fair enough. Rightly or wrongly thanks to a poster on this forum, I've seen version 2.0 beta and its an absolute cracker. Well worth the wait and definitely worth another $20 in the tip jar. Can't wait for the official release now! -
Inappropriate?I hope that 2.0 will work fine, because so far every beta release has been crashing on me with UI Server unresponsiveness! Maybe that's a problem with 64-bit UI redesign or maybe you don't fix it yet, I don't know.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? Please, please do release the update / 2.0 soon. I would pay for iStat menus - before the tip!

Inappropriate?Maybe you can fix the "misdirection" in iStat Menus 1.3. When I found it wasn't working in Snow Leopard, I hit the "Check for updates" button, and it lied to me, "You have the latest release of iStat Menus," sending me on a 15-minute chase through various websites to find out exactly what the proble was.
I’m betrayed
-
Sorry about that. We're working on iStat Menus 2.01 AND iStat Menus 1.31... This is so that when we flip the switch and all users see the update, we have something for the Tiger users to update to. There's a couple of things in 1.3 that we want to fix before dropping Tiger support ("dropping Tiger support" means that iStat Menus 1.31 will be available for download, but we won't be adding new features, they'll go in 2.x and above).
I hope that all makes sense.
