d bkkeepr ISBN nick start = add NICK for each book to switch easily
Hello! I think this would add to usability and would help gain new users:
Now, making progress with one book is easy; you enter ISBN only once and off you go: reaching pages, finishing book - no ISBN req'ed. BUT what if you are reading two or three books? switching between them requires - agh - ISBN.
what if we could add a nick for a book when entering book for the first time; this could make something like this: d bkkeepr ISBN### bknick start; then all operations would only require nick instead of.. 83674382758389937348: d bkkeepr bknick command
@wembley
ps. i promise to use bkkeepr more; we need you around twitter :)

Inappropriate?Hi wembley -
It's an interesting idea, but I do feel it's just substituting one arbitrary piece of information (the nick) for another (the ISBN) and it would still be pretty easy to get the nick wrong - forgetting whether you'd called War And Peace 'warandpeace' or just 'warpeace' for example.
While fiddly, the ISBN is at least consistent, and always in front of you. I'm always looking for ways to simplify the process, and although I don't think this is quite it, I'll keep doing so...
Thanks for the kind words, and glad you like the service.
James

Inappropriate? For starters, I haven't really used your superb sounding service yet, but 2 seconds after reading the available commands on the bkkeepr site I was thinking about a v.similar idea to this and wasn't surprised to see this here already mentioned... I think using a 13 digit ISBN number is "a bit" cumbersome and places a much higher effort (time & cognitive) on the act of bookmarking, compared to just using a nickname/alias for a book. I don't know how many books your average user is reading in parallel, but personally it's not more than 3-4 and I can well remember the exact spelling of this number of aliases. I can't say the same for a ISBN though, which I'd have to look up every single time (also more effort to type on mobile phones; I'm mainly reading on the tube). With aliases I'd have the freedom to be as short as I'd like (I'd probably just use "wp" for your "war and peace" example...)
Also, if you're so worried about misspellings, maybe there could be another command which lists all aliases of currently active books? What do you think?
In any how, I look forward giving bkkeepr a spin. It's a great & inspirational idea for using twitter productively...

Inappropriate?Dealing with multiple ISBNs has been my largest frustration - I usually have 2-3 books going at once, and it's tiring typing in the ISBNs each time (usually screwing it up). I've been cut-and-pasting from previous sent-messages, but that is a PITA.
One possibility - using the last 4 digits of the ISBN as a nick - it's unlikely that any set of active books would have the same last 4 digits, and it could work automatically just as page refs without the ISBN for single books do.
So you'd do 978123456789 start
Then 6789 65
Then 6789 end
(Or even 5 digits, for greater disambiguation. I can remember (and type!) 5 digits a lot more easily than the full span.)
I’m liking this suggestion too.
