Userplane for Ning Q&A
Several questions about Userplane chat for Ning.
1. Can Userplane chat be opened as a full screen pop up rather than in a column on a Ning page.
2. Can chatters have the same abilities they are used to from other Userplane instant install chat rooms? (dock multiple cams, IM, ignore, phone chat, buddy list)
3. Can administrators use functions they are used to with Userplane instant install chat rooms? (adding admins, Userplane money, banning, unbanning, annonymous admins)
My main concerns are chat size (prefer full page pop up), viewing multiple cams, ignore button, and IM's.

It is now possible to dock more than 1 video chat in at the time in Blendapps Userplane chat. So time to go wild and eat up all that bandwidth by video chat with all your friends at the same time!

1) At the moment the Userplane chat is just shown on the Ning page in a column, so no popup. Is what you are looking for a new browser window containing the chat, but still integrated with Ning? What is the use case for this? (I am just trying to understand what it is you need so that we can do our best to make this happen)
2) Some of these features will be implemented in the future, but they are not available at this time. Which ones of the features you mention do you think is the most usefull for our users?
3) There is no admin functionality at this time, but in the near future there will be Userplane administration options added to the blendapps dashboard.

Inappropriate?1) The reason I prefer a pop up is so the entire chat room can be maximized to full screen. I don't really mean have another Ning page pop up with chat in the page. I'm thinking more like MySpace does. It's integrated but a new chat window only pops up. If I could get rid of the right column on just my chat page I would have already added it to my bigger sites. Is there a way to remove the right column on one page and not on the entire network?
2) I have a few very popular and active Userplane chats now and my members would want IM's, ignore, and viewing multiple cams.
I make a very nice income on my Userplane money but for integrated chat rooms it's definitely tempting to add blendapps. If I find a solution for the right column on my chat page only or a way to have the chat room itself as a pop up I'll be adding it.
Also, as you grow consider adding a premium service to remove branding and maybe a 50/50 split of revenue. Just a few ideas. :)

1) Removing the right column on Ning is a good idea. Will dig into the Ning API to see what can be done there.
2) OK, point taken. Will look at adding these things as well.
Regarding premium services that is of course something we keep thinking about, and something like that is probably coming sooner or later. Right now our main focus is to get a feature rich, stable and popular service - that needs to be done before any premium service so that we really have something to offer! -
Inappropriate?I am very interested in a pop-out window option.
This is critical....!
If users navigate away from that page.... using the rest of my ning site... they lose connectivity with the chat & web cam, etc.
With a pop-out window.... they could easily leave that POP OUT version open.... as they browse from page to page... without killing their web cam and microphone connection.
All those other features you mentioned are very important too. But a pop-out functionality is nearly a deal-breaker.
A couple of WORKAROUND IDEAS for the meantime:
(1) On the page that you have the chat embedded on, place an old-fashioned link (very similar to the one that comes up while uploading a large video or music file)... which says.... "Please leave this window open. You may continue browsing the site and going to other pages by opening it in a new window by clicking here."
Of course, the "clicking here" would link to a taget="blank_" link to your own main page.
(2) NOTE that your Notes pages are the widest pages normally available on a Ning network. There is still a right-hand sidebar... But there is no left-hand column, and there is NO LIST OF MEMBERS COLUMN as in a Group page. You might want to try embedding it into a NOTE page.

Inappropriate?You have a very good point, to let users chat and still be active on other parts of your site. You also have very good ideas how to get around it. I will take a look at both your work around ideas, as well as doing a pop up of course. Unfourtunatly I cant promise a delivery time (we have some other things in development that you will soon see) but be sure to know that this is on my todo list.

Inappropriate?As per the suggestions in this thread we have just released an update that allows for multiple cameras in Userplane chat as well as add the possibility to open both Meebo and Userplane chats as popups. I hope this will help!

Inappropriate?You are definitely on the right track. The pop up is almost exactly what's needed. It just could get a tad easier if there was just a link that opened chat into a full size chat window. A user now clicks my 'video chat' tab and the embedded chat room loads on that page. If they click open in pop up they are then being logged in twice to the same room. Some people may be fine with the embedded chat and I understand. For others who prefer the pop up chat you should consider putting your code on our page but with a link or graphic that says open chat. This would eliminate duplicate entries. Any chance of getting the Userplane IM integrated as well? One suggestion would be to lighten the shade of your background image. It sort of stands out too much. :)

Good idea with the link to open the chat as a popup without first loading the chat. I will take a look at that. The Userplane IM is a definite possibility for the future, but to be honest we have many other more pressing things to deal with first. It is not forgotten though.

Inappropriate?OK, take a look in the chat.blendapps.com dashboard, especially on the Ning page of your chat room. There you will find the code for a popup button like the one you requested. The look of the button can customized (changing the text is easy, changing the design requries some design knowledge). Please let me know if this i the final answer to the popup question :)

Inappropriate?The pop up button is very nice. I have another suggestion as well. There should be an option to not set a predetermined room size. When a person enters the pop up chat the room size should adjust to the user's preference. For instance I set my room size at 1000x640 but that may be too big for those on other resolutions.

Inappropriate?we really need the IM and the dock space increased this will bring myself and other users more members and more usage out of the chat room (userplane). So if that is something that can be looked into asap that would be great.

We are SO excited about this!! However, please clarify. Everywhere on Blendapps it says CHATS are totally FREE. This post also confirms that there is not a Bandwidth Limit. However, on Userplane's site it mentions bandwidth limit and they advise to stick to ONE webcam at a time and to check bandwidth usage. Is that for another product?
I desperately need to confirm that this is not true with the Blendapps Userplane CHAT we just set up, before our members get excited about it! This CHAT room would CHANGE the lives of so many people who are homebound and very isolated from human contact!

Inappropriate?I want to know if you can help me alter my NING login code to make it target to the popup version my Ning Userplane Chat. In other words I want them to log in and for it to take them straight to the pop up chat. I posted my source code below, if anyone could help me with the integration.

Try adding an onload javascript event that calls the blendapps_popup() javascript function that is included with the code from Blendapps. This of course requires some HTML/Javascript knowledge and is nothing that should be tried unless you know what you are doing.

Inappropriate?oh that's an interesting idea... launching the popup chat for all logged in users. but remember, with ning, a lot of times you dont need to log in again. still, i can see that has a lot of potential on a site where the chatroom is neglected by the users. it would really raise the awareness.
