Question about sync between multiple macs & font activation
My question is fairly specific, but I was having trouble seeing what the actual behavior is.
I have two macs, each with the Fontcase 1.0 demo installed. On each Mac, I have all non-default fonts in my ~/Library/Fonts folder, I have imported all of said fonts into Fontcase, and am thinking about syncing the vault between two macs using Dropbox.
Let's say that All of my fonts are active on both Macs and I decide to disable one font on Mac #1. Dropbox syncs these changes, and when I turn off Mac #1 and start up Mac #2, what is the expected behavior? Will Fontcase disable the font on Mac #2, or will the Fontcase database update to reflect that the font is in fact active on Mac #2?
I hope this makes sense, and thanks for your time!

Inappropriate?Putting your vault in dropbox means that all fonts in your vault and all metadata associated with them will be the same on both macs.
However, whether or not a font is activated depends on if the font is activated on the current mac, and Fontcase will show it as such.
So activated-statusses are not synced between macs when using DropBox.
I hope this answers your question :-)

Inappropriate?Pieter, do you know of any tutorial specific to doing this? I tried to create a symbolic link and move the entire fontcase folder (app support/fontcase/) into my dropbox. This made fontcase think that that it was starting over, and believe the was no vault at all.
Any thoughts? I know you don't support dropbox, so I'm just hoping you can point me in the right direction :)
I don't need activation syncing. Just file syncing.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I wouldn't advice doing this. DropBox does not support resource forks and instead leave you with 0kb files instead of the actual fonts.
My advice; don't do it until DropBox officially starts supporting this -
Inappropriate?Pieter, would you consider adding support for changing the location of the vault file in the preferences? This is what the application 1Password does in order to make syncing a more fluid process.
I was able to sync using dropbox, and sym links. I get no 0kb files. The activation on both accounts isn't happening, but isn't necessary for me.
Write if you have questions about how I was able to do it. Its a fairly simple process once you have all the necessary pieces put together.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Look in the preferences, there you can move/relocate the vault. You made a symlink from the dropbox folder to the vault file?
Still as a general note, I've had customers who had fonts erased because DropBox did something, so I don't dare support it officially. -
Inappropriate?A note to say that my font file syncing did not work afterall, and thankfully I've backed up. So, yes, you should continue to warn all users NOT to sync until Dropbox supports resource forks :)
Thanks for the prompt responses.
(edit, figured out that last issue)
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Peter what should I request that Dropbox support in order to get this working? thanks for your help :))

Inappropriate? The problem is with resource forks, but DropBox is already aware of the issue.
