Missing Library...Missing Tags, Ratings...
Yet more problems with Fontcase...
I launched Fontcase today after a few months of relatively trouble-free use (it was a nightmare for a while, and seemed to have been fixed), and got a notice to upgrade, so I did. Well I tried.
The update downloaded, but the app was in a death spiral - my library was apparently missing (though it really wasn't - it hadn't moved and was where it always was) so the app acted like it had no library and it wouldn't continue past the first launch screen - no matter which buttons I pressed it wouldn't continue to the app, so I had to quit in order to get it to continue and it would then it would halt the update process.
Launch the app again...get the first launch screen...download update...it won't run so I quit the app.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
So I completely uninstalled the app, downloaded a fresh copy of the app from the Web site, installed it.
This time it launched and fully ran. But my library was reset, so I relocated it and it helpfully noted that I had to relaunch the app to use the new library.
Restart - there are my fonts. Great! Except that now all of my tags and ratings are gone. Hundreds and hundreds of tags and ratings...just vanished. Not to mention any collections I had created. Hours spent categorizing my fonts to allow me to find them, gone.
I'm beyond over this app.
I still have the files from the previous installation, but I'm afraid to reinstate any of them for fear of putting the app back into its death spiral. I'd always thought the meta info was stored in the font database, but apparently it's not.
If there's a way to restore the tags and ratings without screwing up the installation, I'd sure like to know about it.

Inappropriate?I'm very sorry to hear about these problems. The metadata is surely stored in the vault itself, so I don't know why suddenly the tags and rating are gone. I sincerely apologize for this.
From what version were you upgrading from?
You could always go back to the previous version which will be in your trash.
Make sure to backup your copy of the vault. -
Inappropriate?I dunno - I think I upgraded very recently, and then just yesterday there was another upgrade (as if you'd found a problem with the upgrade...).
I tried using the old vault...I pulled it out of the trash and placed it on a different disk, then redirected Fontcast to use it. It restarted, but now displays no fonts whatsoever, even though the vault itself is many hundreds of megabytes in size. My examining the package contents I can see all the fonts in it. But Fontcase shows none.
Any idea what's up with that? -
Inappropriate? So, just to see what would happen. I used the import fonts option on the vault itself (the one the app was using, that was filled with fonts that weren't appearing in the app), and it did import them - and they do now appear in the app. However, the tags are still gone and there were a lot (almost 100) import errors that I've never encountered before.
-
Inappropriate?I think Fontcase was in the process of migrating the Library to a new 'version'. The last update introduced some new properties and the vault had to be updated for that. I can't be sure, but a force quit in the middle of this process might have screwed things up.
Indeed an import on the vault itself would just import the fonts from the vault but not the metadata.
Opening the vault and showing no fonts seems to indicate an old version of Fontcase was used to read a newer version of the Library, but I can't be sure there.
I will surely add a regular backup of the Store.db file (in the vault) to Fontcase. Did you make a backup of the vault, say, with Time Machine? -
Inappropriate?I do utilize time machine, so I probably do. I'm really weary of further meddling with Fontcase just to try to get it to work properly. I'm not sure I can convince myself that it's smart to continue using it, since it seems that at any time something could happen that sends me back to square one (again) in my font management. I really *want* to like and use this app...but it has proven to be a real pain on multiple fronts. I guess it just works for most people...I dunno. Maybe I've got too many fonts and it just can't handle them. Is there a practical limit on the # of fonts it can manage, and what is that number?
-
Inappropriate? There should be no practical limit. I'm really sorry for all the problems you're having. All the metadata is stored in Store.db inside the vault. In future versions of Fontcase I'll make sure to backup this file regularly, just in case.
I understand if you don't feel comfortable using the application anymore though. Can I offer you a refund or will you wait for a future version? -
Inappropriate? After the update, I too lost all my tags/collections (over a 1000 fonts). I reorganized the collections etc. Now the collections show all the fonts, but the Library only shows a PARTIAL list??? Only about 200 of the fonts show up in Library?? If I search for a missing font in Library it will not come up (although it exists in my collection folders and can be searched when that folder is highlighted).
-
Inappropriate?I'm sorry to hear so. From what version did you upgrade?
Also, could you revert back to an earlier version?
On what OS are you?
