Boxee's media tagging is down right broken!
Fix boxee's media tagging feature! I'm at wits end. Not only does boxee always ignore me when I try to force the correct show and episode, but it will identify one season of a show fine and completely ignore another season, even if all the seasons use the exact same naming convention. It's insanely inconsistant, and insanely annoying.

Inappropriate?I would disagree. Boxee always found the right TV Shows for me. Please make sure that your file naming conventions are correct. See http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?...

Sorry, I'm not about to rename every file in my whole library just because they don't match Boxee's particular idea of a naming convention. -
@mjmvisser: Thats the only possible way of it recognizing the file. Whether you don't want to change your library or not doesn't make a difference, they need to match it against some sort of database in order to get the metadata. If you don't like the way it does this, you can always just use the "Browse" function. That way everything is just as you have it. -
Recognition should be more flexible. It should be able to be done on directory structure, or you should be able set up your own standard.
I should be able to say that within my "TV" folder, shows are placed in folders based on Show Name, then folders per season then named according to *my* scheme. -
@giyad: Like all standards, there are many to choose from. But supporting several common naming conventions would help recognize 90% of the content out there. Thanks for pointing out the browse function, it's not immediately obvious that you can do that! Unfortunately browse doesn't let me sort by date (descending), but at least it's something!
Yo Boxee devs! Keep up the good work, and throw in some new regular expressions for matching TV shows when you have a chance. You can find some common ones in the TVTorrents FAQ, and on eztv.it.
Here's another idea, feel free to steal it: Take advantage of your social networking aspect by crowdsourcing the matching of files names to metadata. Keep a database of filename-to-metadata harvested from your users, and suggest matches to your users based on the database. If there are multiple options, allow the user to choose, and use that choice to drive future matches. -
Inappropriate?I certainly agree with the 'force new episode' you describe. When I tag a show as the wrong episode, and I then try to tell it the correct episode, it refuses to change it.
I put 24,6,21 in the episode search (TV show 24, series 6, episode 21), and Boxee keeps the episode 20 I incorrectly set the first time.
I realise I could rename my media to the convention it expects, but why have an episode search form if it doesn't work correctly?
Hopefully it can be fixed :)

Inappropriate?I shouldn't have to rename anything if the files are tagged as they should be. I spent the time entering the tags, boxee should use them.
-
Exactly, I'm not spending a year renaming all my video and music files when XBMC can ID 99% of them with no trouble at all. -
Inappropriate?Along these lines, my #1 feature request is that video that can't be recognised should still be shown in my Boxee library anyway - it shouldn't just be ignored.

Inappropriate?I agree. FOr example, I have almost every MST3k episode on a HDD, as well as rips of movies that I own with their successor, RIfftrax, attached to them. I'd like to be able to label these films as "The Dark Knight (w/ RIfftrax)" or have the MST3k Episodes appear as TV episodes, rather than only having the few recognized movies such as "Santa Claus conquers the Martians" or "Manos: The Hands of Fate" appear.

Inappropriate?I tried manually deleting the media library database yesterday as someone suggested that would correct some issues. Today I found that the issues are still there.
I found (once again) that Boxee ignored some of the movie files in the folder I told it to scan. I didn't have duplicates until I tried to manually add any movie that it didn't find on it's own. When I do that I get multiple copies of that movie.
I have the unrated version of Underworld (2003) on two discs. Boxee finds and correctly identifies the first disc's AVI file. It does not find the second disc AVI file in the same folder. I manually added the second disc file and told Boxee it was Underworld (2003). I checked in "Movies/Underworld" and found that instead of two "Underworld"s, I have three. The second and third both point to the file that I just manually added that Boxee didn't find on it's own.
If I click on either the second or third "Underworld" and go to "Read More" then "Wrong Video" I see the option to "Remove?". If I click on "Remove?" Boxee prompts me to confirm that removing the video is "Okay". If I confirm I am immediately sent back to my "Welcome" page.
If I then go back to "Movies/Underworld" I still see two of the second disc that I added manually. Boxee did not "Remove" it. I can try to go in and "Remove" it again with the same result.
The only way to really "Remove" the duplicates for me seems to be to manually delete the media library file from my userdata folder.
For me this is a bug introduced in the new version. I wasn't seeing this behavior in the old version.
Separate Issue:
If Boxee does find a video file by scanning but identifies it as the wrong video... If I go to that "Wrong Video" link and change the description to the correct video it does not update the icon. It continues to show the cover art for the wrong video. The work around for this seems to be to go to the General Settings and "Erase Library" (for the benefit of other Alpha-users).
Another Issue:
I have AVI files of the cartoon series "Invader ZIM". Boxee only find two of them out of about 20. It puts the two it found by scan into "Movies" instead of "TV Shows". If I click on the two it found and go to the "Wrong Video" link I get the option to set it as a Movie or a TV Show. Setting it as a TV Show gets me a prompt to enter the show title, season, and episode number separated by commas. If I do that the only option that appears is "Invader ZIM (en)". Choosing that changes nothing. ZIM is still in the Movies folder.
Clearly a bug -- seem to be a lot of issues with the media library, auto detection, and manual addition (for the benefit of developers).
I’m frustrated.

Inappropriate?I agree with many above about the file naming schema. I spent hours naming my media and tags the way I prefer and would not care to change based on the new media center I'm using. Although I see no need to change from Boxee anytime soon, I feel my files will outlive any current media player I'm using and don't care to rename everything because of that.
In any case, I think most people's media all follows the same tagging schema, with a difference between Movies, TV Shows and Music, but all media within those categories having the same format. In that case, there should be a setting for each that asks how you format your media filenames. It'd be something similar to say how WMP asks how you want to build the file names for your ripped media.
I'd also like to comment that I too have issues with duplicate names. I'm not sure how they appear, and from the comments above are probably episodes I manually added. However, in a TV series directory that I recognized the first show and then applied to folder, I'll get the first 4-5 as single episodes then the rest of the directory shows double entires.
There's also a few series that completely messed up the episode number tagging. I checked several databases and I had my collection labeled correctly, but Boxee still assigned the wrong episodes.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?I agree - this feature desperately needs to be fixed. I am happy to spend some time telling Boxee which TV show is which, but I expect it to listen to me!!! I am not going to re-name all my shows as it is linked into iTunes and Front Row and I don't want to disturb that. Perhaps Boxee should try reading the iTunesDB (or at least prompt for an import?)

Inappropriate?Boxee is constantly and inconsistently seeing my media. One day TV Shows will report 50+ shows complete with pictures and info, the next it'll show 48 and no pictures. Shows i just watched the day before are no longer in the list and must be manually browsed for.
This is quite frustrating for such an excellent product to have such inconsistent behavior.
I'm running Boxee on AppleTV 3.0.1 fixed according to http://support.boxee.tv/forums/49599/...
Please help
P.S. - YES my files are named in accordance with Boxee recommendation and supported filename syntax
