DVD Player Not working inside Boxee
When trying to Play a DVD, The player acts as if it wants to play the DVD, shows "Playing DVD" at the top of boxee for just a moment, then goes back to the main DVD menu. If I browse the DVD, this does nothing for me as well. I have the same problem on Mac Mini and two laptops.

Inappropriate?@erizner does this happen with ALL DVD titles you have? Can you tell me which title didn't work for you?
-
I've actually never had a DVD fully work on any of my three machines, a Mac Mini, Macbook Pro and Macbook, all Intel machines. I had one title work until the main menu came up, then quit. About half of the time I get the "Playing DVD" at the top of the screen, but then it reverts back as if I never hit the Play button. -
Inappropriate? The list of disks that work would be *much* shorter. An Indy aviation movie, 16 Right, worked, but all of the other DVD's I have tested, whether from Netflix or store-bought do the same as above with one minor difference--when you hit play the "Playing DVD" message appears at the top of the screen, then you are returned to the Home screen with no movie playing--no Now Playing menu item at the top of the menu list.
This happens on a Mini 1.83 GHz / 1 GB and a 2.33 GHz / 3 GB 2007 MacBook Pro, both running OS X 10.5.5.
I just confirmed the exact same behavior on boxee 0.9.6.4578, although am running 0.9.5.4497 in 'production' since Netflix playback is unwatchable in the latest release (jerky playback appearing to pause every couple of seconds as described elsewhere). The DVD "failure to launch" is the same in both versions.
Currently we are reverting to Front Row (ugh) to watch DVD's, or ripping them first using Handbrake.
Thank you for your help in this--boxee is awesome, I just want it to do everything! -
Inappropriate?thanks for your report. hope the next version will fix this...
or the one after the next... :| -
Inappropriate?windows too
-
It works for me on my Windows Vista computer but not on my macbook. -
Inappropriate?same for me on mac mini - i hear the dvd drive being accessed, but then i'm thrown back to wherever i was before.
-
Inappropriate? The latest release did not fix the DVD issue on either my macbook pro or mac mini. This seems pretty fundamental.

Inappropriate?who wants that plastic that wont degrade in a thousand years? personally, i'd look at dvdshrink and handbrake for converting all that plastic to shiny magnetic ohs and ones.
anyhow, you can try to delete .dvdcss and try again. -
Inappropriate?Deleting ~/.dvdcss gets me through the first few screens (FBI warnings, etc.) but it still goes directly back to where I was before when it attempts to load the menu.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Tom - sorry you feel that way, as it is not productive. If boxee isn't meant to be used with DVDs then the DVD functionality should be removed. There are some of us who still want, or need (for the sake of other family members) to have a working DVD player.
Removing ~/.dvdcss doesn't work for me. Playing the disk on VLC first seems to work; as does mounting the disk with Fairmount and then playing it again in boxee: http://www.metakine.com/products/fair...
However it means it is impossible to swap DVDs without exiting Boxee, as the eject command ceases to work with Fairmount.
I have tried using Region 2 and Region 0 disks with the same result (DVD refuses to load; occasionally one will load but the dvd output is garbled). When using Fairmount the DVD plays fine from within boxee.
Edit: Mac mini Core Duo -
i agree with ever thing that being said this is one of the reasong why im not having boxee start up when windows starts -
Inappropriate?watching netflix dvd's would be one reason why i'd like the dvd player working in boxee on my macbook.
I’m sad
