Give me a way to update Boxee from within the program
I'd like Boxee to check for updates, alert me if it finds one and let me update from within Boxee. If that option is in there now, I can't find it and I've never been alerted. As a tester I don't mind downloading from the apps.boxee.com site, but as a regular user I've become used to programs checking for updates.

this is so 1990s on our behalf. auto-update should be part of any downloadble app these days. will be there for sure in the beta.

I think that Boxee's updater system should be open source and platform independent.
Perhaps we can learn something about the process from these other open source projects:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/easyu...
http://remoteupdate.sourceforge.net/
http://yum.baseurl.org/

Inappropriate?I searched all over for this option within the program and was slightly annoyed at having to manually update Boxee. I know it's early and I'm sure this option will come in time.
-
Inappropriate?I was wondering the same thing. I just downloaded Boxee this week. So how do I know if there is a new version?
I’m excited

Inappropriate? To: abdonjr - Knowing of a new version of boxee seems to still be manual process. You need to exit boxee, and update it from the apple tv interface. The biggest problem with this is that it doesn't seem to check what the current version installed is and will always list the most current version (even if its the same version you have installed). I find myself just checking the boxee.tv blog for when updates are released.

Inappropriate?I would suggest something like Sparkle on OS X. It really makes updating easy and painless for the end user.

Sparkle is not open source nor platform independent as it only works for Mac OS X. Boxee needs a system updater that works which all versions of Boxee on all platforms (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, etc.). -
Inappropriate?I totally agree. It's all about the user experience!
-
Inappropriate?Absolutely agree! Been looking for this as a menu option and under the settings section. A high priority enhancement.
-
Inappropriate?Sure was hoping this would make it in the latest release. Oh well, maybe the next one.
-
Inappropriate?Integration with APT or other package management system would be the best way to do this in Ubuntu as it helps to maintain dependencies. But given that a number of the users are running it on a box lacking a windows manager (i.e. no Gnome, or KDE etc) then it would require a script running on the command line. Although, I realise "su -c 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade'" isn't the hardest thing to do, the simpler it is the better. /My 2 cents.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate? In the autoupdate, I'd like there to be some way to mask files. i.e. if I have plugins or config files installed that would be overwritten, this way they could be preserved.

Where is auto update? In the Settings menu ? -
It pops-up -
When does it pop-up? At the start of the program ? -
Yes, as I remember. It hasn't appeared again since Tom Sella's comment, I just checked. -
Inappropriate?Ubuntu users need not apply for bleeding edge. I will try and be more patient :)
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?hewittd - It's already implemented on OS X, just update to the latest version if you have updated the last three versions.

I used the internal update on OS X the other day with no problem... just adding my 2 cents ;)
