@jwadlington You're not the first person to ask about @boxee. We would go nicely together indeed.
Looks like MLB.TV is ready and willing, Boxee!

This would be the ultimate use of Boxee for me and I think it would open the door to a new wave of Boxee users.
Boxee is in a critical time in it's growth from web novelty to a general public application. While, I am personally a sports fan and an entertainment fan, I have many friends who watch nothing but sports: no Lost, no Heroes, and only the blockbuster movies. This is a prime opportunity to bring these people into the Boxee family.
I don't know if anyone on the Boxee team is a baseball fan, but they should really check out the package that MLB is offering this year. Surprisingly enough (for a big corporate business), it's looking like MLB is "getting" that the next wave of entertainment will be web based. Three things they're offering that especially stand out:
1) a standard MLB.TV package for $80 for the entire season (incredible deal--considering you have access to over 2400 regular season games, over 100 spring training games, the entire World Baseball Classic, and the ability to watch the postseason games online)
2) a premium MLB.TV package that gives you a wealth of extra options (including HD feeds, the ability to follow your fantasy team, and the ability to watch up to six game simultaneously)
3) an iPhone/Blackberry/smart phone application (for under $10!) that gives the radio stream for every baseball game as well as video updates and Gameday updates.
I'm blown away at how much MLB understands that people want and are willing to pay for well-designed and non-crippled web services. After this whole Hulu mess, I was unsure that any content provider really believed this. While I understand that Boxee needs Hulu to be successful, a web service as well designed as MLB.TV screams for Boxee support. This is a mutually beneficial relationship and MLB.TV is the kind service that Boxee should be supporting: a content provider that "gets" Boxee's mission.
Boxee needs Hulu to flourish, but it also needs to expand out of the niche that it's currently in. Adding live sports is the way to go. With the changes made this year to the way that MLB.TV is provided (from Silverlight to Flash), this should be a relatively easy implementation with potentially large payoffs.
I understand Boxee. I get what it's trying to do, but a lot of people aren't quite there yet. Bringing live sports to Boxee expands the market into areas that Boxee needs to go to be successful. MLB.TV is a relatively easy way to wade into these waters.
Even if you are not a baseball fan, please consider voting for this. This is the kind of thing that Boxee needs to be successful. The best way to support Boxee in its attempts to work with content providers is to bring more people into the fold. The more people we have on the bandwagon, the louder our voices will be and the more power we have to convince content providers to join the cause. Offering live sports will do this and adding MLB.TV is a step in the right direction.

Inappropriate?there's been some opensource projects around this site in the past for an mlbviewer. hopefully, since they're reverting back to flash for the live games, this should not be as difficult.

Inappropriate?i agree re the importance of live sports. it will get a high priority from us later in the year
-
Inappropriate?Along with this idea support for March Madness when it rolls around each year would be fantastic. I know it may be wishful thinking though, but you would earn some serious reputation for doing it.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I have started on this.
What I know so far:
1)I know how to login to mlb.tv with credentials from a config file
2)I know how to list all the games for a given day
3)I know how to construct a url for any of the games and point to a particular media type
I don't know:
1)how to write a plugin/app
2)what media type is best suited
If anyone wants to help or give me pointers, send me a note: linuxphan _at_ comcast.net
If anything, I could probably work my way thru a template that does anything similar, perhaps the netflix app works in a similar way. -
I have no idea how to do any of that, but why don't you write this on my pthread at the Boxee forums. More people will probably see it there that could help. http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?... -

Inappropriate?I will pay additional monies to get my mlb.tv on boxee. no question. where do i sign?
-
Inappropriate?I don't have boxee solely because of the lack of sports. I will sign up immediately as soon as they have the ability to carry sports games.

Inappropriate? What is the chance that this can happen with opening day so close?
-
Inappropriate? There is a an app written in python called mlbviewer that was originally created when the mlb.tv didn't work under Linux. It's been updated to work with the newest player and has a lot of good features and a very responsive developer. Could be used as a foundation for a plugin.

Inappropriate?Live sports is the only thing holding me to cable now. Being able to selective subscribe to MLB through Boxee or something similar would be a perfect fit. Its also appealing to my inner economist...monies are going to the content provider, not the middle man (eg Comcast, RCN, etc)
