Rip and encode a DVD/CD with the boxee interface.
Some day I'd like to have Boxee running on a MacMini. It's got an optical drive, and I'd like to be able to encode DVD/CDs simply by inserting the disk, and selecting Encode in the menu using my remote control.
In order to gain main-stream penetration, Boxee needs to break free from the computer and start doing all of the gruntwork from an appliance! Only hobbyists hook their computers up to their TV. Plus ripping a DVD is too complex for the average user. One of the reasons why iTunes really took off was the fact that iPod buyers could seamlessly add their existing CD library to their iTunes library. No fuss, no muss, no complicated settings. If the software could handle all of that, it would make it easier to design an all-in-one piece of hardware.

Inappropriate?I think this would be great, though I fear possible legal trouble because of over-zealous lawyers representing ignorant companies..

Inappropriate?probably less "over-zealous lawyers representing ignorant companies" than lawyers just doing their jobs and trying to prevent illegal ripping of dvds
i'm not saying i don't agree with making backups of dvds, or that i've never done it, but it would be risky for boxee to include it as a feature
in addition, i think boxee should just stay as a media manager and player... want other features? use other programs.
I’m unconcerned

Inappropriate?Boxee sounds like they want to be a complete media center running on a set-top box on some non-technical person's tv. Just as iTunes encourages their users to rip their own CDs, Boxee should do the same. I'm sure that most of what people currently have indexed on Boxee are downloaded illegally. Allowing the average person to easily rip their DVDs would help legitimize the "media manager" portion of Boxee.
-
Inappropriate? If Boxee had the ability to launch applications from within the user interface, then Boxee wouldn't need it's own ripper and encoder/transcoder...

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate? Please implement this. Nearly every piece of audio playback software under the sun has the ability to rip CDs. Why should this not be the same for video playback software and DVDs? Who wants to peel themselves off the couch and go shuffling through a pile of DVDs?
I’m baffled

Inappropriate? You could just link it to Handbrake.

Inappropriate?Id like the ability to create a cd playlist for the car and burn to cd. also needs to have options for .mp3 burn to cd as many in car players support this.
