This jerk near me won't update his location

So some guy from about 20 miles south of here recently visited a location my area (4000 meters). He went home, and is still posting update 'messages'. I get every one. He's announcing that he's going to some location, but he never updates from that location. This is really annoying, and I've tried to contact him to say, hey, update your location, but he seems to be ignoring me. That's great fun, to see a ton of messages from this jerk who thinks brightkite is like twitter in that you OCCASIONALLY tell it where you are and just update no matter what.

There needs to be a "This guy is doin' it wrong" button, so you can send him a message saying "Hey, you're posting messages to a location you are not at and have not been at for a week, fix your location". Even if he just fixed cities (he lives 2 cities away) that would be good enough.

Also, it would be neat if some locations could have a time limit. You can't stay at a movie theater overnight, for example, and you would be auto checked out if you were still listed as being there for 24 hours. This allows it to cover people who work at a theater, as well as people who are just seeing a movie.

One solution is ignoring everyone around me just so I don't get updates from this one guy who doesn't know how to use BrightKite. Another is to block him, which is going to happen very soon. But I don't think he's going to be the first or the last to not really understand the idea of posting messages to a location.

Great job, BKite Last reply on June 27, 2008 16:12.

Bkite, in any case, your placemarks, notification near you service and twitter feed are awesome. I'm looking forward seeing your brilliant idea with iPhone 3G. :p

Get my exact location from FireEagle Last reply on June 25, 2008 17:49.

OK so now there are lots of (well some) applications for each of the different phone platforms out there. Nokia, WMobile, iPhone and they all check in with FireEagle. Brightkite has FireEagle integration for uploading. The next logical step would be to get the locations from FE and if the location has changed by more than oh - say a quarter or 1/8 mile, update the Bk location. This will get you cross platform gps deployment instantly!

I would love to have Mologogo updating FireEagle which updates Brightkite.

UPDATE: OK I see that 12 days you already discussed this with someone: http://getsatisfaction.com/brightkite...
I'll just say I applaud the idea and offer my services as an alpha tester of that version!

Marking Temporary locations Last reply on June 22, 2008 03:12.

This weekend i attended a two-week long annual event. Held in an unfinished building that will soon be office space, it was 12 floors of artists, musicians and performers. Thousands of people checked out the free event.

As Brightkite is THE location-based social network that places people meeting in locations first, I just wanted to know how to mark temporary locations like this. In my head I can already think of a few more locations where temporary marking might be useful:

DC and Atlanta's summer Screen on the Green outdoor film series
    Summer festivals and carnivals
    Pecha Kucha nights

These are important because 1) they are excellent social outings and 2) when the event finishes they no longer retain that identity (often, the location may be completely different at the next event). How should these places be marked to maximize meeting people that attend?

Business Search 'Pick One' - but can't! Last reply on June 12, 2008 20:41.

When searching for business, email comes back with 'pick one...' and results of search. I want to be able to reply to that email - or something else - with number of result that comes back then have location updated accordingly.

I'm using Windows Mobile 5 so there's no copy/paste (which is lame)

Can I do this? What's the best way to 'pick one...'?

The "Improve the Post a Photo Feature" Discussion Last reply on June 04, 2008 04:37.

A discussion about integrating and adding features for posting Pictures. Add your ideas as thought to this discussion. I'll start it off:

    1. Commenting - This absolutely needs to be allowed.
    2. Picture Views - Can we count how many times a picture has been viewed from each unique IP addy?
    3. Replies - It would be cool to add a tiny url to the picture page when replying to a posted picture.

    What are YOUR ideas?

Problems with Internet Explorer Mobile Last reply on May 20, 2008 03:48.

There is life outside the iPhone universe. With this I mean that there are a lot of smartphones with internet connectivity, but that the Brightkite frontend has some quirks that limit the usability on these phones.

I have a HTC S620 phone with WLAN and GPRS connectivity. Of course I don't want to communicate with Brightkite through SMS. I want to check in and post pictures from my phone. Technically my phone has everything that is needed for this. However, the Brightkite site has several flaws that keep me from doing this for the moment.

Using Internet Explorer Mobile, I see a perfect login screen, but after logging in the screen goes blank. This is probably due to some limitation in Mobile Internet Explorer. I could install Opera Mini, but if I have to take that step just in order to use Brightkite, I'm not sure I will do the effort.

In a second attempt, I used i.brightkite.com, the site intended for iPhone users. Now I can login, go to the "check in and search" screen. But the form there cannot be "submitted" because the submit button is not an ordinary form submit button, but some javascript-bound entity. So, no luck either with Mobile Internet Explorer in combination with Brightkite's iPhone site.

It's a pity that an application for which mobile use is essential, is not adapted to Windows Mobile and its default tools like Internet Explorer Mobile.

Can't e-mail photo, but can SMS. Want text to be entered into BK Last reply on May 06, 2008 14:33.

For some reason, I cannot send a photo by e-mail on my Treo 650, but I can via Sprint Messegaing. Problem is, when I do so, the text I type in does not get entered since there is no "subject" line with SMS.

Please remove the invite request statement if you're not actually going to give them out. Last reply on May 02, 2008 10:31.

You should remove the message from the invite page: "Absolutely need some more invites? Ask us nicely by clicking the "Feedback" link in the top right corner, and we might help you out." I along with people who can read assume that means that all we had do was ask and we shall receive more. Sure you're not going to give out 50 to each person but the false hope is disappointing.

Privacy settings for public mode Last reply on April 19, 2008 22:22.

I that the privacy mode should have more control. The "Public" mode should have the same options as the "Private" mode. Or maybe a complete "OFF" mode.

It would be nice to have custom modes for different situations.

My Initial Experience Impressions Last reply on April 14, 2008 18:19.

The sign up form is good, though it would be neat if you could fit the re-captcha widget more into the style of the site (don't know if they allow that).

The welcome screen has lots of words. Lots of words. I almost went blind. I didn't care what the words said (there were too many) and just started clicking on links, first my silly default profile picture. I would suggest a much simpler welcome UI -- something with an easy-to-follow getting started guide. Numbers help. Large fonts and short strings of text help. Graphics, diagrams and pretty icons help too. I still have no idea what this site does.
