Is it possible to set up an option to send a mobile alert every so often that asks if you're still at a certain location? I keep forgetting to check out of some places. I like reminders. =]
I'm trying to check in my location at a hotel in Plymouth, UK - Future Inn, Plymouth. When I initially search for this it correctly finds the hotel (1, William Prance Road), however when I click on this to try and check in my location, it then changes the address to a Plymouth across the other side of the atlantic! Definitely seems like a bug.
I have errors in my visited places since about 9 hours. When checking in in a nearby place In my visited places also the city, province and country get added as separate entries. I did the check-in via an SMS. please see here. image
After reading several posts the Brightkite-dev team is woking on several projects. I would love to know how things are going.
1.The desktop application for Windows and Mac computers > According to previous statements by Brady this was supposed to be ready last month. So how is it going?
2.The Facebook app. Brightkite promised Facebook integration > How far are you guys with developing this?
3.Brightkite is considering making a Dashboard (Mac OSX) widget (ref: we're considering making our own widget, if we have the time. We're a small company, so sometimes that can be a challenge.). Is this still in the pipeline?
4.And yes the iPhone app. Everyone knows its coming, but still the company knows how far the project is and must be able to give a somewhat detailed ETA on it.
4.1 Is the iPhone Brightkite app going to use the push notification service provided by Apple, to be released in september?
A bit more personal...
4.2 Is there any word on Periodic Automatic Checkins either by Brightkite or other third-party dev team with the Brightkite API?
Thank you all for doing a great job guys, keep the good work going!
Even though the street that I work on isn't yet in google maps, the correct address comes up when I do a search for the company ("HZDG") and I can check in. However, if I repeat the search and look at the place stream, none of my checkins show up up. Is there a way to get around this?
sms not working. Will not post updates via bkite's short code. Did successfully post an mms via the email address yesterday, but cannot check-in via the short code.
I've gone from BrightKite completely ignoring my check in requests via SMS to it not understanding me. I've tried multiple times to check into a business that I searched for and it will respond with a list of options that I found and I'll reply with "1" to which BrightKite tells me that it did not understand me. I have also noticed recently that certain businesses that I used to check in to a lot just are not showing up at all anymore in the list of my results.
SMS check-in usually works for me, in fact earlier today I used it and even found the location using '? subway zipcode' and found my spot and checked in. Later check-ins via SMS have all been completely unresponsive. This was also noted by another twitter friend today.
I was going to suggest adding the ability to check-in via IM, but then I found this: http://tinyurl.com/6ys3wa
So maybe an alternative would be to send a direct message to a dedicated Twitter account (“d brightkite @home”). That way we could just use Twitter’s Jabber bot, which seems pretty stable.
I see a lot of people checking in to a location that they were already checked in to. I suspect this means they check in in the morning, go to lunch, and then check in again when they get back from wherever they went to lunch.
Seems like a good idea to let people "check out" of a location, if they know they're going to be gone for an extended period but not check in to a new location during that absence. This way, I don't show up somewhere, expecting to see someone who isn't actually there, despite being checked-in.
I am from the Netherlands and I am soon going to buy an iPhone. I believe Brightkite is very promising since it is one of the best location based services outhere for Europeans, and unlike Loopt its free. My issue:
I believe this service to be only very successful if it can run completely automatically. With this i mean that the application runs in the background (in the iPhone's case with the push service apple provides) giving periodic checkins wherever i might be, continuously, every 5 or 10 minutes or so. I hope this is possible to implement, optional at-least. Please let me hear from one of the people inside the company if this option is or will be in the pipeline.
i'm not receiving mobile updates to my friends locations. I'll receive stuff that they say but it won't tell me when they check into a new location. It's been this way for about 24 hours.
i'm excited about brightkite and look forward to using it to find my friends in the real world. however, my experience so far has consisted only of about 10 annoying check-in messages from some stranger named Mona. I see in your FAQ:
("Why am I receiving messages from people I don't know? Check your "Nearby Notifications" settings in your Account Settings.")
...that I can change this setting but I urge you to change the default to "friends only". Otherwise everyone who dips their toe in like me will get annoyed before they get value, and most will unsubscribe.
Also it would be nice if the incoming SMS messages said they were from brightkite, rather than from "80289" which just looks like SMS spam. I don't think that's who you want to be.
We need the capability to check in using GPS capability if it's on our phones. For example, searching for a ubiquitous location like a gas station or starbucks, etc., and I checked in somewhere a few miles away then it's impossible to use the "? starbucks" to check in since there are so many locations. Google Maps uses location based cell tower triangulation on my Nokia E61i which works excellent. If I could use that as my location from which to base my search to start that would make life tons easier. Right now I end up not checking in at all since it's impossible. Another simple suggestion would be to use the zip code or intersection or address in the business search. For example today I was at a Shell station at 902 Richmond. Typing "? Shell" and going through 6 pages of results never brought up the listing so I gave up. If I could have typed "?Shell 902 richmond" that would have made life easy!
I have two ideas for you're already awesome service:) 1. It would be great to have a "check-out" option. When I leave a place, I may not get to the next location for a while, and I'd like folks to know that I'm not at the last location anymore. 2. I would like to have an additional level of privacy for my home address. Basically, if I could just have home address be set to always private, but still say "home" that would be awesome.
It would be great if I can navigate a map to a location and place a pin to mark my current location, instead of having to search for my current location.
Yesterday I tried to check in 4 times -- 3 times from places that I have placemarks for & a 4th place where I gave the correct address. My check ins were not recorded because the system sent me e-mail responses asking me to confirm that I want to check in from those locations. I didn't get the e-mails until hours later, so I was unable to check in.
Why does the system request me to confirm that I want to check in at places where I set placemarks for? Isn't it obvious that the answer is "yes" since I used the placemark name? And why did it ask for confirmation when I entered the correct address? Finally, on Thursday I entered an address in Oakland, CA and I received a request to confirm that I wanted to check in from an address in Salt Lake City. Seems like it's a bit wonky.
