Periodic Auto Check-in using GPS (iPhone) Last reply on July 08, 2008 17:37.
I am from the Netherlands and I am soon going to buy an iPhone. I believe Brightkite is very promising since it is one of the best location based services outhere for Europeans, and unlike Loopt its free. My issue:
I believe this service to be only very successful if it can run completely automatically. With this i mean that the application runs in the background (in the iPhone's case with the push service apple provides) giving periodic checkins wherever i might be, continuously, every 5 or 10 minutes or so. I hope this is possible to implement, optional at-least. Please let me hear from one of the people inside the company if this option is or will be in the pipeline. -

How can I add a location/address/business that BrightKite cannot find? Last reply on July 07, 2008 18:15.
For example, i was at a cafe and when i typed in the address it said it could not be found. I would like to see functionality that allows users to add businesses based on address.
Additionally, I entered in an address to check in to and BK gave me the wrong business name. How can I correct this? Also, where are you pulling your address data from?
Thanks! -

This jerk near me won't update his location
So some guy from about 20 miles south of here recently visited a location my area (4000 meters). He went home, and is still posting update 'messages'. I get every one. He's announcing that he's going to some location, but he never updates from that location. This is really annoying, and I've tried to contact him to say, hey, update your location, but he seems to be ignoring me. That's great fun, to see a ton of messages from this jerk who thinks brightkite is like twitter in that you OCCASIONALLY tell it where you are and just update no matter what.
There needs to be a "This guy is doin' it wrong" button, so you can send him a message saying "Hey, you're posting messages to a location you are not at and have not been at for a week, fix your location". Even if he just fixed cities (he lives 2 cities away) that would be good enough.
Also, it would be neat if some locations could have a time limit. You can't stay at a movie theater overnight, for example, and you would be auto checked out if you were still listed as being there for 24 hours. This allows it to cover people who work at a theater, as well as people who are just seeing a movie.
One solution is ignoring everyone around me just so I don't get updates from this one guy who doesn't know how to use BrightKite. Another is to block him, which is going to happen very soon. But I don't think he's going to be the first or the last to not really understand the idea of posting messages to a location. -

Indiscriminate Locations? Last reply on July 03, 2008 19:06.
Two adjacent businesses (restaurants, in this case) are showing up as the same place on brightkite.com. KFC - http://brightkite.com/places/ad88b0d5... and Eat 'n Park - http://brightkite.com/places/95382a1e... are showing the notes from both locations. -

annoying check-ins from strangers Last reply on July 02, 2008 05:17.
hi guys -
i'm excited about brightkite and look forward to using it to find my friends in the real world. however, my experience so far has consisted only of about 10 annoying check-in messages from some stranger named Mona. I see in your FAQ:
("Why am I receiving messages from people I don't know? Check your "Nearby Notifications" settings in your Account Settings.")
...that I can change this setting but I urge you to change the default to "friends only". Otherwise everyone who dips their toe in like me will get annoyed before they get value, and most will unsubscribe.
Also it would be nice if the incoming SMS messages said they were from brightkite, rather than from "80289" which just looks like SMS spam. I don't think that's who you want to be.
Thanks.

getting sms notifications when seems that it should be off Last reply on June 30, 2008 03:31.
I am still getting sms notifications. I have turned off (in Account settings/Notifications) the SMS notifications and left the e-mail notifications on. I am now getting the e-mail notifications (after personal error) but I am also getting SMS notifications. Since I need to wait for Verizon to get its act together the SMS component is less useful -- and I am getting many which I need to turn off to catch my breath....is there something I might be doing wrong?

Automatic Check-ins == You Win Last reply on June 30, 2008 01:06.
The single best thing you could do for BrightKite is make checking in automatic, so my phone *totally automatically* tells my friends where I am. I want the service to be invisible. I'm constantly forgetting to check into my new places, and it seems silly that I need to remember to do so in order to make good use of the service. It's a huge weakness.

The Ability to Edit or Insert Notes & Locations Last reply on June 29, 2008 22:57.
I'd like the ability to edit our notes and locations, as well as maybe being able to insert location check-ins into the past. Here's why:
Sending a text with the '&' characters cuts off the rest of the message. Would be nice to sit down at a computer later on and edit that, keeping the time and location, and keeping things neat. Instead, I just had to make a note later explaining a previous note, and it's sloppy feeling and useless to the present.
While out traveling, I forgot to check-in to different locations, so I sent pictures and notes and they're all assigned to my home. No way I see to edit the location. That sucks because I didn't want to delete all those notes and pictures--and everything after--just to fake checking in, in the proper order, and remembering my later notes and possibly re-entering them again, too. Plus, it costs money to send pictures over mobile phone, so who wants to send it twice just to make up for not being able to edit.
I also forgot to check in at a lot of places I visited while traveling, even though I'd like them to show up on places I've been and have a sort of visual representation of my journeying. It'd be nice if I could just insert a check-in and enter the date and time. If people forget to check in, they can sit down when they remember and enter it in on their computer or whatever and fill things out. Maybe then also be able to append notes to check ins into the past, too.

Public/Private toggle Last reply on May 26, 2008 21:35.
It would be nice if we could toggle if a checkin is public or private, OR have the ability to mark a location as "Always Private".
My biggest gripe with brightkite is having to delete checkins because I forgot to toggle my private status before I checkin at my house, and/or, forgetting to toggle when I leave my house and marking places private that can be public.

Allowing 'en route' check-ins Last reply on June 15, 2008 01:41.
Here's something I'd appreciate. I dislike checking in from my iPhone (compared to my desktop browser), and I usually know where I'm going before I leave the house. It'd be nice to be able to check in as 'en route' to a location, and then send a text from my iPhone to 'complete' the ckeck-in - thus removing the 'en route' check-in from the stream and adding a traditional check-in to replace it. En route check-ins should never show up in the stream unless they're the latest item (spam!), but it'd be a good way to hook up with people - if you know somebody is en route to, say, Denny's, you could text 'em and say "Hey, mind if I come with?". Also, it'd save me having to try to type any complicated names on the iPhone (web interface *or* SMS), and just allow me to send one character to 'complete' the en route check-in (I was thinking an `@` without arguments).

Added functionality with checking-in Last reply on June 26, 2008 20:52.
When checking in to a location that is not found on the map (e.g., a new development) I would like to be able to specify the business name associated with the address. For instance, I ate at a new restaurant in my neighborhood today. It's a chain, and I pulled up all the other locations except mine. I could check in to just the address, but I couldn't specify the name of the restaurant when I checked in. -

Better interface for checking in locations? Last reply on June 25, 2008 22:33.
There's gotta be a better way to check in on your location on your mobile phone. I'm just using brightkite since yesterday. Today I went out on a local bike path and took a picture that I wanted to post. I could not search for this because it wasn't an address. I searched for the name of the trail, but that didn't work.
My thought is that there should either be some integration between brightkite and an internal gps receiver if available, or at least some way to access latlong coordinates through a more dynamic mapping tool, either via mobile browser or via the mobile version of Google maps. Optimally, I'd like to just bring up a map, zoom into my exact location, hit my screen to put a pin down, then have options to check in, placemark, post photo, etc. The current interface seems awfully clunky unless you are only using it to locate yourself at specific street addresses. -

How long does it take for a new (named) location to be available for check in? Last reply on June 23, 2008 17:01.
We recently added my company to Google local in the hopes that it would then be available to check in with the "Name (Address)" format in Brightkite.
Am I wrong in assuming this is where that data comes from? How can I make this happen? I'd like to have the place name in there, rather than just the address. -

sms post photo not working for me Last reply on June 19, 2008 16:38.
When I send a text to Brightkite with the command post photo - I get back "Sorry, but we didn't understand you," along with the instructions to post a note...
I'm on AT&T on a Nokia 6085 if that makes any difference. -

Checked in Buena Vista and it put me in Wisconsin Last reply on June 17, 2008 20:27.
I tried checking in via website at Bongo Billie's in Buena Vista, CO. It showed up correctly in the search, but when I checked in, it put me somewhere in Wisconsin.
