How can I add a location/address/business that BrightKite cannot find?

For example, i was at a cafe and when i typed in the address it said it could not be found. I would like to see functionality that allows users to add businesses based on address.

Additionally, I entered in an address to check in to and BK gave me the wrong business name. How can I correct this? Also, where are you pulling your address data from?

    Thanks!

Incorrect results from location search Last reply on July 02, 2008 22:02.

Brightkite often does a terrible job at location search (examples provided below).

I often try to check in using the "?" syntax, but then give up and forget about it because Brightkite returns such terrible results.

Based on the results I get from Brightkite, it looks like you're just using the Yahoo Location Search API. So it's not really your fault, but ... yeah.

You guys really, really should move to Google's Local Search API (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearc...) or to some other geo API that returns better results:

Here are a few real world examples:
    ___________________________________________
    (1) "?vinyl room" near San Mateo, CA

The "Vinyl Room" is a bar in nearby Burlingame, CA.

    Brightkite returns these results:
    http://brightkite.com/places/search?q...

A bunch of furniture shops and flooring specialists. Wrong. The real "Vinyl Room" is nowhere to be found in those results at all.

    Correct answer:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en...

    Google gets it right.

I tried checking in from Vinyl Room the other day. Was there with a bunch of friends and hoped to show off how bad ass Brightkite was. But Brightkite SMS and I went back and forth a ton of times with incorrect results before I just gave up.

    ___________________________________________
    (2) "?xyz" near San Mateo, CA

"XYZ" is a bar in downtown San Francisco, approximately 20 miles away from San Mateo.

    Brightkite returns these results:
    http://brightkite.com/places/search?q...

OK, I get the ones that have "XYZ" in the title. But after the top few, the rest of the results don't even have "xyz" in the business name. Why are they appearing? Well, here's the answer.

Yahoo LocalSearch results for this search:
    http://local.yahooapis.com/LocalSearc...

Look at the "US Auto Glass Center" result. Yahoo is returning that business in this result set because someone included the string "XYZ" in a review for that business. (See the [LastReviewIntro] XML node.)

Ugh. Brightkite users in the SF Bay Area are getting incorrect results for a bar in downtown SF ... because somebody on Yahoo! did a review of a glass maker and had "XYZ" in their review?

    That's really, really bad.

    Correct answer? Google.
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en...

Result #1 is XYZ, the bar in downtown San Francisco. Nailed it.

I could go on with more examples, but the general gist is:

Brightkite team, we love you! But please investigate using some other API besides Yahoo Location Search for your location lookups.

Attach Privacy Level to Location Last reply on June 16, 2008 18:59.

Browsing through some of the privacy ideas here, it seems like a great number of them could be solved simply by attaching a privacy level to individual locations. For instance, when signaling BrightKite that I'm at home, I would have Private mode attached to Home, so before it would notify anything at all to anyone it would set me to private than send the check it that I'm at home (but private). Likewise I could attach public to the Cafe, so when I get to the Cafe from home and checkin at the Cafe it would set everything to public and announce that I'm at the cafe.
This would even solve some of the issues with SMS checkins. I would no longer have to set Public or Private before checking in at a location, I would simply /know/ that as soon as I checked in where I was the appropriate level of privacy would be applied.

Geotargeted Notes Appearing on Map? Last reply on July 01, 2008 18:27.

Maybe I'm missing something, but is there a view that shows all notes on the area map based upon their location? For visiting new cities or checking out new areas of town, this seems to be a very helpful feature for finding out what's nearby (and worth checking out).

Adding location functionality to "What's happening" Last reply on July 01, 2008 15:32.

Since Brightkite is location based social network I feel like one of the main tabs within "What's happening" should have a map that either displays people, comments or locations. Today this area feels more like a Facebook "news feed" but Brightkite is so much more than just news, it's news + location. Just and idea...curious to hear what others think.

Search not finding businesses Google Maps knows are there Last reply on June 30, 2008 04:54.

I was just searching for "Dangerously Delicious Pies" in Baltimore, MD, USA on the website. There are two, one on Fleet Street and one on Light Street. The search only shows the one on Fleet. Is there something weird going on to only show one result?

I have the same problem when searching via SMS, but interestingly when searching via text I was actually CLOSER to the one on light street. I was checked in just a few blocks away but the search still pointed me to the only result on Fleet street.

If you search Google Maps, both entries appear, and the Fleet Street listing is "unverified"

Brightkite can't find my location! What's up with that? Last reply on June 12, 2008 15:38.

It can't find my location when I type it in. What's up with that? I type it in just like I would write it on an envelope. It comes up on Google maps, but not here.

    Automatic Check-ins == You Win Last reply on June 30, 2008 01:06.

The single best thing you could do for BrightKite is make checking in automatic, so my phone *totally automatically* tells my friends where I am. I want the service to be invisible. I'm constantly forgetting to check into my new places, and it seems silly that I need to remember to do so in order to make good use of the service. It's a huge weakness.

The Ability to Edit or Insert Notes & Locations Last reply on June 29, 2008 22:57.

I'd like the ability to edit our notes and locations, as well as maybe being able to insert location check-ins into the past. Here's why:

Sending a text with the '&' characters cuts off the rest of the message. Would be nice to sit down at a computer later on and edit that, keeping the time and location, and keeping things neat. Instead, I just had to make a note later explaining a previous note, and it's sloppy feeling and useless to the present.

While out traveling, I forgot to check-in to different locations, so I sent pictures and notes and they're all assigned to my home. No way I see to edit the location. That sucks because I didn't want to delete all those notes and pictures--and everything after--just to fake checking in, in the proper order, and remembering my later notes and possibly re-entering them again, too. Plus, it costs money to send pictures over mobile phone, so who wants to send it twice just to make up for not being able to edit.

I also forgot to check in at a lot of places I visited while traveling, even though I'd like them to show up on places I've been and have a sort of visual representation of my journeying. It'd be nice if I could just insert a check-in and enter the date and time. If people forget to check in, they can sit down when they remember and enter it in on their computer or whatever and fill things out. Maybe then also be able to append notes to check ins into the past, too.

    In Route to . . . Last reply on June 28, 2008 02:10.

Seems you need away to say you have left a location or perhaps are in route to another.

I messaged someone yesterday who I did not notice was at that location two days earlier (fortunately for me he worked there so he there at the time) but clearly it begs the question of how to deal with I was there but I am not there now and in fact I am on my way somewhere else.

    Just a thought

Introduce support for Israel in Brightkite. Last reply on June 27, 2008 14:50.

Hello, I live in Israel and Brightkite does not appear to support Israel completely. I attempt to write the address i'm in, but Brightkite keeps bringing me back to the city page instead. My idea is that you support all addresses, regardless of wether they "exist" or not, because there are no map sites who can provide authentication. (Israeli ones can, but they don't have an API and are complex)

Added functionality with checking-in Last reply on June 26, 2008 20:52.

When checking in to a location that is not found on the map (e.g., a new development) I would like to be able to specify the business name associated with the address. For instance, I ate at a new restaurant in my neighborhood today. It's a chain, and I pulled up all the other locations except mine. I could check in to just the address, but I couldn't specify the name of the restaurant when I checked in.

Get my exact location from FireEagle Last reply on June 25, 2008 17:49.

OK so now there are lots of (well some) applications for each of the different phone platforms out there. Nokia, WMobile, iPhone and they all check in with FireEagle. Brightkite has FireEagle integration for uploading. The next logical step would be to get the locations from FE and if the location has changed by more than oh - say a quarter or 1/8 mile, update the Bk location. This will get you cross platform gps deployment instantly!

I would love to have Mologogo updating FireEagle which updates Brightkite.

UPDATE: OK I see that 12 days you already discussed this with someone: http://getsatisfaction.com/brightkite...
I'll just say I applaud the idea and offer my services as an alpha tester of that version!

Why not include weather data? Last reply on June 24, 2008 17:09.

I was just thinking how cool it would be if BrightKite showed what the weather is like in any given location. It doesn't have to be overlayed over the map (if that's even possible), just shown on location pages and maybe the pages of people who are currently checked in somewhere.

I'm assuming it wouldn't be too hard to implement, and I think it would be a pretty cool feature.

    Any thoughts?

Giving titles to addresses Last reply on June 23, 2008 13:41.

Marking Temporary locations Last reply on June 22, 2008 03:12.

This weekend i attended a two-week long annual event. Held in an unfinished building that will soon be office space, it was 12 floors of artists, musicians and performers. Thousands of people checked out the free event.

As Brightkite is THE location-based social network that places people meeting in locations first, I just wanted to know how to mark temporary locations like this. In my head I can already think of a few more locations where temporary marking might be useful:

DC and Atlanta's summer Screen on the Green outdoor film series
    Summer festivals and carnivals
    Pecha Kucha nights

These are important because 1) they are excellent social outings and 2) when the event finishes they no longer retain that identity (often, the location may be completely different at the next event). How should these places be marked to maximize meeting people that attend?
