I was going to suggest adding the ability to check-in via IM, but then I found this: http://tinyurl.com/6ys3wa
So maybe an alternative would be to send a direct message to a dedicated Twitter account (“d brightkite @home”). That way we could just use Twitter’s Jabber bot, which seems pretty stable.
Could the name of our placemarks be what is passed to twitter? I don't want the universe knowing my location, but my friends know where my home is and if they want to find locations that I check into they can investigate/ask me.
Custom alias for locations would be useful for my friends to understand where I am. Especially with twitter turned on! Personally, I know two addresses: My home address and the address I grew up in. I don't expect my friends to know either of them :)
Of course, they can still find those details by visiting the location page.
would love it if there was a mobile version of the site. also it'd be good if there was an API and a desktop client. maybe compatibility with other services like twitter, jaiku, dopplr... :)
My Brightkite posts are no longer getting cross-posted to Twitter, while I see that my Brightkite friends' posts are. Furthermore, those same friends are no longer appearing in my Brightkite stream on the website. I've turned on SMS to see if they come in there, but so far I've received nothing.
I think some attention could be paid to the way locations are shared outside of Brightkite. I really like the privacy levels you allow us to set for Brightkite users, but my entire home address gets sent to Twitter since I have that sharing feature turned on. I don't really want that to happen.
I'd rather stick with only allowing my trusted Brightkite friends to see my home address, and perhaps something like a location alias being sent to Twitter and other external services. So when I SMS that I'm @home, my Brightkite friends can see my full address, but maybe the Twitter message is simply "David's @home."
I'd like to be able to unlock my previously sent private updates, from the web interface. (I forgot while I was out that I'd set it to private, etc., and uploaded a couple of messages.)
It would be nice to check a box to blast them out on Twitter, too.
I'd like the option to have check-ins for certain Placemarks not be published to Twitter. People on Twitter don't need to see when I arrive at work then back home, but perhaps when I'm out doing other things, folks on Twitter might be interested to know this.
I can not find my friends on Twitter. Apparently Brite Kite is having problems talking to Twitter. This has been an issue since last evening. When I try to find my twitter friends in britekite, I get the following message.."Sorry, but we had trouble contacting Twitter. Are they slow/down? Maybe try again later..."
Twitter importing of friends takes a very long time. My suggestion as a UI professional, and frustrated user is to allow multiple friend requests at once. This could be done as a series of checkboxes next to each user.
When I post a note to BrightKite, I have it automatically sent to Twitter. I really like that BrightKite shows the character limit for a note - 140 - but because I have this forwarding to Twitter, I'd like it to have some way of taking into account the number of characters that the additional BrightKite URL adds to my note (and therefore to my Twitter post).
For instance, if I post a 140 character note that goes to Twitter, it is shortened on Twitter because the BrightKite URL is added too. The only way round it is subtracting 25 characters from my 140 limit, so I know when to stop typing to create a note that shows in full on Twitter.
(Also, this is further compounded because I have Twitter feeding my Facebook updates, which means my updates may have a message then a "..." cutting off the end of the status update.
