After signing up (through a friends invite) I don't see that friend..

I signed up after a friend sent me an invite (he had checked the 'auto request friendship') .. we're not friends, but when I go to the friends -> people tab on the iphone app, I don't see him there. I see his activity, but not him on the people tab..

I’m confused
