Blocking someone also unfriends them.
Blocking a friend unfriends them, in addition to placing the block. They disappear from your friends list, and if you search for them and bring up their profile, the block is still in place, but unblocking them does not return them to your friends list. You must add them as a friend again, which sends an approval request.
A friend that I had blocked around April 19th was still on my friends list, and I was able to unblock and add him as a friend without approval, but when I blocked again, he was removed, just as I noted above. So, it appears that a change in the last few weeks is responsible.
I first noticed this while testing blocking and unblocking via API calls, and confirmed via the web interface.

Inappropriate?Hi llamas, this behavior is actually intentional. We had quite a few users who were concerned that blocking a friend left them in their friends list and we changed it so that blocking a friend behaves just like blocking anybody else.

Inappropriate?OK, I understand. I was looking at blocks as a way of turning off information to/from a friend, without unfriending them (the stealth unfriend maneuver from Dodgeball). It looks like the same can be accomplished between the privacy settings in the user configuration and the friendship settings.
