Inappropriate?Hi emilycatherine, I tested out adding a label to a couple of different addresses and it worked for me. What address and label are you trying to input? If it's a sensitive location you can send it to me at lesley[at]brightkite.com and I can play around with it to see what's going on.
-
Inappropriate?it's been over a month for me and at least a dozen locations, mostly the many many businesses that brightkite can't identify. I had no problem with it before. also can't add bracket name to placemarks, tried that as well as an alternative.
I’m frustrated
-
Can you send a couple of the locations to me so that I can test and see exactly what's going on? -
Inappropriate? After I got no response to @Burrito Bros, I sent this via SMS earlier @407 Main St kansas city, mo [Burrito Bros.]
At a show at a club, my friend and I were unable to check in by the name, and we both tried unsuccessfully to check in and add the name:
@1522 McGee St. Kansas City, MO [Crosstown Station]
When we do this via SMS, we get absolutely no response--no 'I'm sorry ... TACO BELL....', no 'Pick one', nothing. When I drop the brackets off, it checks me in at the address (though it often mysteriously drops the numbers and checks me in at just the street).
I have tried to placemark at this point, ie. 'MARK cs [Crosstown Station]' but that also doesn't work. I can 'MARK cs' but haven't been able to label a placemark for at least a month as well.
It is as if the brackets are nullifying my transmission. -
Inappropriate?Another one I tried literally dozens of times was @1301 Summit St, Kansas City, MO 64105 [Mulkey Sq. Park]
I tried it with parentheses, with the name first and then the address, with the address in parentheses, you name it.
(Though I was not trying to check in via the park name, every time I sent this it tried to check me in in Central or S America. I don't know why--pages and pages of Google web results and Google Maps show nothing but the park in Kansas City where I was.)
thanks! -
Inappropriate?Ah, I see. Currently we don't support adding custom labels via SMS (this applies to adding custom labels to placemarks over SMS as well), you can only do that via the web or the native iPhone app. That option will be available over SMS in the future, but unfortunately we don't have an ETA.
With Burrito Bros, I tested sending "@Burrito Bros, Kansas City, MO" and it responded with this location: "Burrito Bros (407 Main St, Kansas City, MO)"
http://brightkite.com/places/d3e06b9a...
We don't have a listing for Crosstown Station because the Google Maps listing is unverified and we don't support those. Checking in at the exact address does work though. I went ahead and made a custom label using the web, it can be found here:
http://brightkite.com/places/f1d3e848...
I was able to create a custom label for Mulkey Square Park that matches the Google Maps listing here:
http://brightkite.com/places/591d0d90...
It looks like the actual search for that place is broken in our system, so we will have to fix that. Once it's fixed you should be able to search for "Mulkey Square Park, Kansas City, MO" and have it bring up the correct location.
I hope that helps clear things up.

I did try again and get '@burrito bros' after several failed attempts to check in at their exact address. Intermittent search success, I guess. I was shocked as they have only been there for weeks and most places I try unsuccessfully to check in by business name are months or years old. -
Inappropriate?Sorry, I should have been more clear. I have tried both checking in with labels and placemarking with labels from both my phone and my computer.
I obviously use SMS when I am out, but when I happen to get back to a computer, like after lunch, I try repeatedly to use the search bar to do the same thing.
I have been unable to save custom names/labels/aliases for placemarks as well as addresses using the search bar on the web.
While I have a browser on my phone (sidekick) and can use Brightkite, the search bar's "Search" button does not respond on it.
I created my home and office placemarks using this command, so I know it has worked.
I have tried recently and I know it has been impossible to save a placemark on the website with a label, such as 'xt [Crosstown Station]. It always tells me it exceeds 20 characters, as if it is trying to save it all as the placemark name.
I have a lot of trouble checking in at addresses as well, making it tough to know what the problem is.
Yesterday I tried to check in @4700 Wyandotte St Kansas City, MO and without confirmation or reply, it checked me in @Wyandotte St, Kansas City, MO. This number-dropping happens a lot.
At this point I do not try to placemark or label, as it isn't the location I chose.
I will keep trying.
Can you post a template for checking in with a label and placemarking with a label, so we can be clear we are doing it correctly? I am baffled why this ablity to name locations & events is not part of the FAQ on using brightkite. -
Inappropriate?Tried again, no luck.
Existing placemark:
work
the office (Kansas City, MO 64153)
New placemark:
x [CrosstownStation]
1522 McGee St (1522 McGee St, Kansas City, MO 64108)
No label was created; it was added to the name. I would have to check in '@x [CrosstownStation]' and it would only display the address, not the label. -
Inappropriate? You can create placemarks via SMS by sending "MARK placemarkname" and as long as that name is under 20 characters it will save it. For example "MARK Home" or "MARK Work" should work just fine. You can't create labels over SMS, so sending "MARK placemarkname [label]" is not going to work for you as it will think that the brackets are part of the placemark name and it will likely put you over your 20 characters or it just won't understand you altogether.
To create a custom label on the web, you just need to enter "1234 address [insert custom label here]" into the search bar.

Then it should create a place page for that address with your custom label:

Using the web, placemarking a location with a label should be no different than placemarking any other location. Using the Crosstown Station example from above, you would just click the "Add to placemarks" button on the right of the page:

Then you will be prompted to enter a short name for your placemark, which will be what you send via SMS when you want to check in:

I tested checking into the address "4700 Wyandotte St Kansas City, MO" via SMS and it responded with the correct address for me:

I get the same results searching it on the web as well:

We are in the process of revising our FAQ to include important details such as this, expect to see some changes with this soon.

In this case, I was confirmed to have checked in at the exact address via SMS reply, but when I look at my profile, it shows me checked in at just the street level.
I do not have an iPhone, so I do not have these chat-type interactions. -
Inappropriate? The way to look at it is that placemarks and labels are two very separate functions. Labels are created on the search and placemarks are created through the "Add to placemarks" process. You can't really combine the two. We have some improvements coming to custom labels in the future that should make them function much better.
