Brightkite on a college campus
First off, I love the product.
I am currently a student at Duke University. I think it would be cool if you offered some way for students on college campuses to check in where they are on campus. Two reasons:
1) College kids are always on their phones (sms/iPhone) and computers. Duke for example has a campus wide wireless network.
2) It would be a very social thing to know where your friends are on campus.
The only problem with it now is that many of the buildings on campus don't have specific street addresses (or not known to students). So being able to add campus buildings, whether done by brightkite or by its users (think wiki) and the ability to import a campus map overlay on to the Google map.
Just a thought.

Inappropriate? This should be relatively easy and available in brightkite. The current workaround right now until brightkite implements the drag-n-drop icon in google maps is to find the exact lat/long of the campus buildings then adding them as placemarks inside of bk.
You should be able to easily find the lat/long from google maps directly.

So if I got exact lat/long points of places on campus via a handheld GPS, you are saying I can insert that it into BrighKite? -
i've actually started doing this.. its something to do when you're bored in class, but you have to find the exact building you want to add the placemark too. its kind of neat. -
Inappropriate?I was just thinking about this today, because I was at my college's library and the mailing address for the school is for all campus buildings.. when I walked to our coffee shop, I wanted to tag that, as well, but couldn't!
Now, our campus is wayy smaller than Duke, but would like to have this feature, as well.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I completely agree, this would be great for my campus as well.

Inappropriate? We're working on way to enable that.

Inappropriate?Yay. At Stanford, all buildings on the Quad have the same address, but being at the Math building 380 is way different from being at Wallenburg building 120. Checking in by building number or name would be great. I see you're working on it. Thanks for a kewl app!
I’m tired, happy

Inappropriate? This sounds awesome. I think, though, this could go a little further than just by building. I know it wouldn't be the easiest thing to implement, but what about specific offices too? I work at the college TV station and I'd love to be able to let people know I'm in the office via noting it's the station's office, not just the building. But hey, if I can tell BrightKite I'm in Bozorth instead of Savitz, I'm a happy man.

Kichigai, you can add a custom label to locations if you wanted to show your office, building, etc. You would just need to enter your location on the web like this: Address [College TV Station] and then you can placemark locations with your custom labels so you don't have to enter it like this every time. :) -
Lesley, cool. That ought to be pretty useful. I had no clue that feature existed. -
Inappropriate? On my college campus, there are a number of buildings that are very close to each other. The Location service in my iPhone can use each building's wifi mesh to determine approximately where it is, but the accuracy is low enough that you could be in one of several buildings. A friend of mine has already geocoded all the buildings and put them in our school's wiki. If I knew you guys would add the locations to Brightkite's SnapTo list, I would be more than happy to put forth a little effort and compile a list of building name => coordinates mappings. I'm not too familiar with this getsatisfaction.com site, so if there's some way to message me, do it. If not, reply to my post and I'll send you an e-mail.
