Confused by the "Show filters" settings
Ok, to be clear, I kind of take pride in my complete ineptitude when it to comes to websites and the internet.
Don’t know if this is a bug or a design question or what. I really love the website UI, and the people who designed it deserve mad props. But one feature confuses me.
If I go to any user’s profile (even my own profile), there is a “Show filters” link. If I click on this link, there are 3 boxes that I can check or un-check.
Now, if I un-check the boxes for “Notes”, “Photos”, “Checkins” and then click the “Apply” button, I get... “USER has not posted anything yet” and the option to “nudge” them.
I don’t understand this at all, if I had un-checked those options on purpose, why should I then get the option to nudge?
Furthermore, those settings are then applied to ALL your friends! There is no clear explanation to the user that these settings are universal. This is very confusing, for me at least!
Repro Steps:
1. Sign into Brightkite
2. Go to one of your friends
3. From a friend’s profile page, click on “show filters”
4. Un-check the “Notes” and “Photos” and “Checkins” boxes
5. Click on Apply
6. Go to any other friend (Pick a very active friend)
7. Note the option to “nudge” (Nudge error message implies that friend has yet to do anything on site)
Result: The option to “un-check” all options of “show filters” for a friend does not make sense, implies only that friend will be affected by change in settings.
Result (2): If the user “un-checks” all options of “show filters”, the user then sees a “nudge” error message, implying that their friends haven’t yet done any activity on the site
Expected: Don’t know, maybe disallow the un-checking of all options?

Inappropriate?Hi YoMama, this behavior with the filters is actually intended. By filtering out notes, photos, and checkins from someone's stream you've removed all of their activity and when there is no activity by default it shows the nudge screen. You'll see the same thing if a person posts privately and all of their activity is hidden to you.
User testing has shown that applying these filters universally is the way to go. We will see about making this clearer on the site. Sorry for the confusion.
