Custom alias for locations
Custom alias for locations would be useful for my friends to understand where I am. Especially with twitter turned on! Personally, I know two addresses: My home address and the address I grew up in. I don't expect my friends to know either of them :)
Of course, they can still find those details by visiting the location page.

Inappropriate?I definitely agree with this idea. I had the same thought, but didn't quite think of it as an "Alias". Thanks Phil, for verbalizing my thoughts before I could!
I’m excited

Inappropriate? We're thinking about showing the placemark you might have given the place when you check in or post there. There are some backend implications that we still need to mull over, but I agree with you, that behavior would definitely be an improvement.

this is one of the best points

That wouldn't very well for me. Most of my placemarks are two- or three-letter abbreviations that would make damn little sense to other people. I use placemarks so that I DON'T have to type in long names. -
Inappropriate? As a temporary fix I started posting notes to the areas I check in. I changed my Twitter sharing settings to only tweet on notes and not checking in :)

Inappropriate?I think there could be a second tier to the placemark process that would hopefully simplify things: When we set a placemark and give it a name *we* use it by (the short-n-sweet name we use to check in via SMS or the web), you could simply add a second "Public Name" field that allows us to name it for everyone else to see.
This Public Name could also be tied to privacy levels, i.e., only "friends" or "everyone" can see the Public Name, but trusted friends can see the actual address. The Public Name could also be sent to third-party services like Twitter, which would solve a privacy issue I just posted another topic about. -
Inappropriate?Under the same lines, it would be nice to be able to hide some specific addresses from anyone (like a checkbox "hide specifics") - I may not want my home address publicized, even to friends. Or maybe I don't want people to join in when I'm at a strip club, though I want to state I'm there ;) Seriously though, just way to be entirely private without disrupting the communication.
I’m happy

We're playing with the idea of letting your set a "private" flag on a placemark. Any time you check in there, it would basically acts as if you were in private mode, even when you're not. -
Martin, I like the private flag idea, but I'd really just want the LOCATION to be private in that case. I don't mind broadcasting what I'm saying, I would just want where I'm saying it to be "fuzzy" in that case. -
Inappropriate?this can usually be done with the label you want in brackets after the address -- @123 Street St. Altoona, PA [Mom's house]
I have been having trouble with this working lately, but it might work for you.
You can also do this when you placemark-- MARK moms [Mom's House]
Again, I have been having trouble with bracketed names but it is a standard option that, for some reason, is never mentioned in the FAQ, SMS guide, etc. -
Currently we only support adding Custom Labels over the web or in the native iPhone app, it is not available using SMS. We do mention it here in the FAQ: http://brightkite.com/help/faq#what_d... But it does really need it's own section. We are in the process of revising our FAQ, so we will be sure to include this information. -
Inappropriate?I'd like the alias to show up if I'm in private mode. I wouldn't mind giving up that I'm "At home", but not the address. And I love the "private if near placemark" feature. That's why I'm always private at home. :)
