Finding friends?
Maybe I'm missing it but is there an easy way for me to find people I might know using BK?

Okay, Twitter users rejoice! We introduced friend discovery (in the left sidebar) that lets you specify your Twitter username, and we'll find people you are following who are also on Brightkite (and you're not friends with yet).
Post private beta, you'll be able to invite those who are not yet on Brightkite.
Enjoy :)

Inappropriate?Alex, no super-convenient way yet...but it's on our todo list.
Things you can do now: invite them...they'll have a friend request from you waiting when they sign up.
Hope that helps,
Martin -
It would be great if you followed Dopplr's lead and allowed me to import or "detect" my friends from other networks like Twitter, Dodgeball or Plazes.
Dopplr even released their code for this:

And Brian Oberkirch wrote up the flow:

Inappropriate?does that detract from your remaining invites? my friend is already on the service.

Inappropriate? We're actively working on this...please bear with us.

Inappropriate?Yeah, it's awfully hard to use a social network if you can't find your friends on said network. I can't imagine that point's been lost, and I look forward to seeing find-your-friends implemented well.
Chris' Dopplr mention brings up another point though, which is integration with Dopplr to the extent you can. Twitter integration makes some sense in that it piggy-backs off of a large installed userbase. Dopplr integration makes at least as much sense since trips invariably take us to more than one "location," and BK deals in the granular attributes of location better than Dopplr (does, or is apparently intended to).
...going to look for GetSatisfaction thread on this topic now... -
Inappropriate? We are still working on friend discovery, but for now you can at least search for users by name or username in the top search bar.

Inappropriate?i agree with factoryjoe. It would be awesome if brightkite took the cue from dopplr to allow friends to be imported in a not so sketchy way as most social networks offer.

Yay! ;) -
Inappropriate? That's great, and perhaps the most hilarious/awesome implementation of such a feature ever. Portability slams up against privacy in a beautiful explosion of easy openness. Because now, in addition to finding my twitter friends BK, I can find *everyone's* twitter friends on BK. Sweet. ;)
I’m delighted, thankful, apprehensive, enthused

Heh, in a way yes. But the data is already public, so you could essentially import anyone's friends anyway (albeit more slowly). Cripes, if only Twitter would do OAuth. Ugh. -
Re: OAuth - hear hear!
Right, the information is definitely already public. But being public+automated+fast vs. public+manual+slow somehow recalls to mind the phrase "prettier confetti," and the discomfort in the room that resulted from the EFF chairman's remarks at the portable social networks panel at SXSWi. I'm sure you remember... -
Inappropriate?Yep, I hear ya. Still, importing other people's friends seems a little less than useful, especially since these are people that you have to add one at a time (rather than in bulk -- i.e. "add all" is not (and shouldn't be) a UI option). The potential for abuse is certainly there, but at least we're no longer using email addresses for friend import!!
I’m smirkful
-
Agreed. :) -
Inappropriate?Okay, I'm a twitter user, but I don't rejoice. There are over 20 of my friends in both services. Why do I have to click on each one individually to add them? Why not a grid or some kind of checklist that let's me add them all (or add a subset of all) in the same way? I can go back later and say whether I trust a smaller subset.
I’m frustrated
