fireeagle integration
integrate with Fire eagle. they do a better job of resolution of location. its nice to reveal my neigborhood instead of the all or nothing choice i have with brightkite now.

We don't currently support pulling from FE because there is no scalable way to consume FE information...we'd have to poll the FE status for every FE user every few minutes...that's fine for a few people, but not for thousands of users.
We've working with the FE team to address this (probably through an XMPP-based push service).

Inappropriate? We have integrated with FireEagle, unfortunately it's one-way only right now (we send stuff to them). We're in the process of implementing the reverse flow right now.
I'm not sure what you mean by "all or nothing" choice. We support most levels of accuracy. -
Inappropriate?thats cool. i didnt see your existing resolution settings until after i posted.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Being able to read from FireEagle will be a great step since I would then be able to use Twitter/FireBot to specify my location. However I guess that placemark would be kind of useless in that context unless you also provide a Twitter bot that can parse those placemarks.
-
Inappropriate?I don't plan to use Brightkite until it supports getting my location from Fire Eagle. My location is uploaded to Fire Eagle from Navizon every few minutes, so there's no point in me "checking in" to Brightkite.
-
Inappropriate?I'm with Andy. I'm stopping my use of BrightKite until it becomes a FireEagle consumer... Why would I want to HAVE to use BrightKite to update location???
I'd love to help Beta test this functionality...
I’m frustrated

Soon Brightkite will be able to consume your FireEagle location. It is on our list, please bear with us ;) -
Inappropriate?+1 from me to fully support bidirectional FireEagle integration. Until them, I'm parking myself on the Falkland Islands. See more here: http://location-based.blogspot.com/20...
I’m waiting on my island

Inappropriate?+1
I'm using Plazes to set my Fire Eagle location from desktop, and Brightkite from my iPhone. Which means Brightkite is often out of sync.
I know reverse-geocoding has to be quite a challenge, but I'm sure y'all are up to it.
I’m pensive

Inappropriate?Yep we agree. Get location from Fire Eagle is on our to-do list.

Inappropriate?yeah, count me in too, then i can use mologogo on my phone to update brightkite directly

Inappropriate?+1 from me. This would be really, really cool.

Brady, think more creatively. The only feature that needs the constant polling is the "Near Me" feature. Even if this is a heavily-used, gotta-have-it feature (is it?), you could still pull the current location upon status change rqst/place checkin rqst. This would meet the needs of most folks commenting here and get you to market in a day or two. Then, once you solve the scale issue, roll out the new solution.
It's a couple of calls and a preference item for "use FE's location when changing status". Easy-Peasy... -
@jeppedy Exactly what I was going to suggest, for starters if you showed where fireeagle thought i was at the check in page that would be a huge value add. and that should be pretty trivial. -
Until FE addresses the push service problem we may allow people to check in at their FE location. For example you could text @FE to Brightkite and we would then use your FE location to check you in. Additionally we have discussed ways on the web/iPhone where it would be less manual. -
How is Pownce doing it then? -
Inappropriate?@brady Now that's what I was hoping for. "@FE Man, it's pouring here today! So much for my picnic" would mean a little more now. I say run with it!

Inappropriate?Yes please to two-way updates between BrightKite and Fireeagle
-
Inappropriate?Pownce now has two-way FireEagle communication, and they don't purport to be "the location based social network". Aren't they equally as big? Would they not then have the same problem?

Hi Andy, we are working on 2-way FireEagle integration. With Pownce it is slightly less complicated than what we have to deal with. -
As I understand it, the reason Pownce has no difficulty integrating with FireEagle despite their size is because it only ever needs to know where you are when you post something. So a user action prompts the pull from FE; this is more scalable because it does not have to be happening all the time, only once in a while when you post something.
This is equivalent, in terms of practicality, to the suggestion that BrightKite should prompt the you, when checking in, to just pull from FE (also like @FE mentioned earlier).
I think this is very sensible and, from the sounds of it, feasible.
Some people might want BK to check you in automatically whenever your FE is updated (from Plazes or any other service that pushes your location to FE). This is nice because it means you will only need to check in with one service and all your FE-capable services (e.g BK, Plazes or Pownce) will be updated instantly and automatically.
This is very difficult; because it demands that BK constantly lookup the location of all of its users through FE to make sure they haven't gone from their last check in point.
I think, until FE itself supports pushing relevant data to BK (i.e when a BK user's FE location is updated, FE should let BK know to pull the new geodata), the @FE user-prompted pull is a clever and effective compromise. -
Jeevs, you totally nailed it...that is the challenge. -
I like the @FE idea. Until Fire eagle supports pushing. -
Request for Brightkite developers - please consider other options for your international users as well.
For example, sending @FE via text or mobile email might seem like a good answer for your US users. But living in Asia, neither of those really works on a long term basis.
I understand that it's difficult for you to poll FE and am willing to put up with the hassle of having to update BK separately to pick up FE data. But please give us an option via the mobile site as well! -
Balaji, we are definitely considering users like yourself in regards to this feature. We will make sure that you are able to pull this data across all of the interfaces and not just using SMS or mobile email. :) -
