iPhone 1.1 Discover via Addressbook crashes consistently
The iPhone 1.1 "Discover via Addressbook" crashes and takes out the BK app anytime I try to run it. I've restarted my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, with same results. Deleted my contacts list (by deleting MobileMe account), added a single contact, then tried Discover, and it crashed again. Running iPhone OS 2.2 (5G77) with modem firmware 02.28.00.
Also seems to crash randomly when viewing an attached picture from friend feed, but I've only had that happen two out of ten times, and I can't figure out how to reproduce it...

Inappropriate?Same here. Did everything as in the above post except for deleting contacts. Everything else seems to work great but still testing everything else.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Would either of you be able to get crash logs? You can send them to lesley[at]brightkite.com. Thanks!
-
Inappropriate?I will when I get home tonight.
-
Inappropriate?Thank you both for the crash logs. It looks like it has something to do with an address label being invalid, so maybe you have an entry in your address book with no label or something odd is going on with a label. Do either of you have your phones set up for other languages or anything like that?
-
Inappropriate?I sync with Google so I have a few unlabeled records. WIll do some clean up and see if I get a different result.
The response from the other person says that even with a single address record it happens. -
Inappropriate?Just deleted everything in my address book (after backing up of course) and used just my "Me" record and no error. Trying a clean up of my address book to see if that helps.
-
Inappropriate?I have no idea how I've ended up with 5 different "getsatisfaction" accounts. I suck at remembering account names/passwords. Sheesh. :)
Lesley -- when you say "label" what do you mean? Do you mean custom item labels (Apple Addressbook lets you create custom fields with custom field names; like I have a "brightkite" label for my BK friends), or do you mean Group names?
There is no foreign/non-7-bit ASCII going on in mine, but I do have about five "Smart Groups" defined (BK users, LJ friends, etc) based on content in their address card.. Hmm. I could nuke those and see if that makes a difference...
Now, to throw a wrench into things -- I sync about 3/4 my contacts via Addressbook (via MobileMe), and the other 1/4 via MS Exchange. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? I will have to wait until later tonight to nuke the MS Exchange stuff from my phone to see if that's involved -- inevitably a order fulfillment server will implode while I'm in the middle of screwing with it, and someone will call me, and I won't know who it is because my contacts are gone.
Is there any way from those crash dumps to tell *which* entry it's dying on? I don't know ObjC and really can't parse what is going on, other than "Thread 5 crashed with CoreFoundation blah blah blah". :)
I'm glad Amy chimed in that she's having the problem too; I always tend to find weird problems that no one has ever heard of before, and no one can replicate. :-D
-
Inappropriate?Grr. I wonder why Amy's fix didn't work for me. I'm betting it's something Exchange is pulling in now..

Inappropriate?Once I restored my contacts, I had the same problem. Some error in the way BK is loading and parsing the contacts. It doesn't like something.
I am syncing all contacts with Exchange and MobileMe (back up and splitting everything up is just too much work for what it's worth). -
Inappropriate?xtex104, by label we mean the description for an entry, like custom labels, smart groups shouldn't cause the crashes. Unfortunately there's no way to tell what specific entry is causing the crashes. The devs are testing a fix for this right now.

Inappropriate?Got it. I just deleted my Exchange contacts, and Discover worked without any problems. I re-added them, and it crashed. No idea what in the Exchange contacts is causing it, though. I just went through all of my contacts and I don't see anything out of the ordinary there -- but who knows what kind of garbage Exchange is pumping out. Ugh.
My next step was to export my Entourage address book out to a text file, and then delete all contacts from Exchange. I then made sure the text file only contained standard alphanumeric and punctuation. I checked the phone to make sure the contacts from Exchange were gone, and tried Discover -- it worked fine. So I imported my contacts from text into Entourage, and waited for them to pop back into the iPhone. Tried Discover again -- it crashed.
There are two things I want to try as soon as I have the time:
I want to run the text export through Perl and cut out everything except name, email, and phone number..
If that doesn't help me zero in on what is causing it, I'm going to wipe out the contact list again and re-import it in small chunks until I can figure out which record making BK barf. It might take a while, though, because I have 190 contacts in Exchange; I figure I can split it into 3rds and just whittle down until I find the bad record. :)
I'll let you know the results, if I can figure out which one is causing it. I'm slammed at work until next Wednesday, so I'm a little low on free time, but I'll try to work on it tonight.
I’m annoyed with MS Exchange
-
Inappropriate? The problem is with *ANY* Exchange contact. The first one I tried made BrightKite explode. I tried three others: each made it crash. When I deleted all Exchange contacts, it worked fine. I then typed in a single contact, by hand, into the Exchange web interface. That entry crashed BrightKite. I wonder if there's something wonky with how the iPhone OS stores Exchange records in the address book database.
I’m hating Microsoft, as usual

Inappropriate? This fix has been submitted to the app store for review and should become available shortly. Additionally there are a few other new features we added :)
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem, with the 1.1.0 version of brightkite downloaded today from the app store. it's not clear to me what "shortly" means since it's been over a week since the last official post.
I’m disappointed
-
Hi Liz. The application update that includes this fix has been submitted to Apple. We are now just waiting on Apple to review it and post it to the store. -
Liz, I've been checking over the holiday and Apple hasn't released any updates since the 24th that I have seen. -
Inappropriate? The update to fix this problem has just posted to the app store. You can now download the update - Brightkite for iPhone 1.1.1
