We are working on an iPhone application that will use the core location functionality available to native iPhone applications. Additionally we will support auto locating methods as available on the device. Check in's will be come much easier and automated.

We are not planning on pulling in Twitter feeds. There are a few applications that effectively aggregate feeds ie. Socialthing & Friendfeed. Additionally services like Twinkle who do exactly what you are describing above.

Can the location also have the state instead of the city?
Just in case you are in a city that has the same name as another state.

Donutmaster, yes, when your location shares it should also include the state. At the moment that info is not showing as a result of some work that we are in the process of doing. It should hopefully not be like that for much longer. :)
