Marking Temporary locations
As Brightkite is THE location-based social network that places people meeting in locations first, I just wanted to know how to mark temporary locations like this. In my head I can already think of a few more locations where temporary marking might be useful:
DC and Atlanta's summer Screen on the Green outdoor film series
Summer festivals and carnivals
Pecha Kucha nights
These are important because 1) they are excellent social outings and 2) when the event finishes they no longer retain that identity (often, the location may be completely different at the next event). How should these places be marked to maximize meeting people that attend?

Inappropriate? In the future we are going to enable what we call "Public Placemarks". They basically work like a personal placemark but are available for everyone.
Currently we have to declare something as a public placemark but in the future you will be able to declare them yourself.
We have created public placemarks for events such as the Web20Expo and Coachella. If the events are big enough and it makes sense we will happily create one for you.
You can also give any place a custom names to a place.

You can also check in at places that are not addresses

Ha! I was thinking of presenting some of my work at one of the Denver Pecha Kucha nights! -
Inappropriate?Thanks for the reply, Brady.
Will there be a customizable attribute for placemark length? Say I'm organizing a conference in Denver (which I am); can I mark the location of that event as "Bryan's conference" for the next week?
This would be cool for expiration of public placemarks, but might run into trouble if two public placemarks have the same location (say you're having a Brightkite Ball in the conference room next to mine).
BTW, is the offer still open to see BKHQ? I'd love to stop in and say hello! :)
I’m insistent!

We don't really allow open visits to BKHQ unless there is a specific reason, however we may be up for meeting somewhere in Denver time permitting.
Placemarks we are working on the proper way to implement Public Placemarks. Its possible that they may have a time component.
You will be able to refine by placemark. If there are 2 placemarks in the same building you will be able to choose to only see content from that placemark.
...but remember the whole point of Brightkite is to meet people around you. The overlap with the event next door may result in some serendipitous encounters :)
