The mobile version is coming very, very soon...please bear with us.
The API is in the works, and will be REST/OAuth based. While we don't have any plans to work on a desktop client ourselves at this time, we expect the developer community to come up with something if there's enough interest. The same applies to integration with other services.

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing some fun apps appear! -
Bring on the API!
would love to write a BrightKite client! -
Inappropriate?I'm definitely interested in the API from an iPhone perspective. Being able to determine where I'm at using Core Location and then sending that to BrightKite would be awesome.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Even just an API access, so we can get hold of the information for i.e. friendfeed etc

Inappropriate?I'd like to see some twitter clients with built in brightkite functionality.

Inappropriate?I'm surprised by the lack of an API. My approach is always to build the API first, then implement other interfaces on top of it. Eating your own dog food makes for a better API.
I’m incontinent
