My 2009 wishlist for Brightkite
2008 was a huge year for BrightKite! Congrats to the team.
Here's a list of things I would like to see that i think will make 2009 even bigger for BrightKite.
1. More FriendFeed integration (either from BK or FF)
2. Rate a post
3. Events and/or meet-ups
4. Groups (or rooms)
5. Themes or skins (so I can my BK on the iphone match my new magenta case)
6. Grouping friends
7. More place management and rating for places (maybe even reviews)
8. Desktop (Adobe Air) app for BK
9. Stats like hot topics and stuff - something to help expand my friends list based on tags and stuff
10. Using FB connect to use my FB login or friends in BK (common userlist)

Inappropriate?Just thought of another one... Bring the BK wall to the iPhone! That would be very cool
I’m excited
-
Oooooh, that's a great idea! -
I already have it on my iPhone, it's called the activity page. The wall wouldn't really fit. -
A smaller wall... something a bit flashier, maybe the activity screen in landscape would work instead. -
Inappropriate?Oh oh... Another one... Re-post function. I may subscribe to someone that posts something that my group of friends would find interesting.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?In order:
1. Favorites (anything: note, photo, check in, location, etc)
2. Walls for my friendstream (or even just select users)
3. A way to embed my visited places map.
4. Better Flickr support:
a. Add specific tags automatically (ie. "Brightkite" "mobile")
b. Ability to customize what is the title/description.
5. Better Facebook status updates:
a. Customization same as Twitter.
6. Advanced search:
a. Search only my own posts.
b. Hashtag support.
7. Viddler video posts!!!
I’m confident

Inappropriate?I like all these.
I would like to see some kind of integration with Yelp! So if you are in an area you can see highly recommended places for lunch or hotel. This would come in handy for as much as I travel for wrestling.

Inappropriate?I'm going to 2nd the nomination of comments from mobile.. perhaps reply to an SMS and have it attach as a comment like Utterli does and add...
FIRE EAGLE 2-way integration and/or apps that will allow one-button "i am here" notifications based on phone GPS readings. (Blackberry fan here but i'm sure WinMobile + iPhone needed as well)

Maybe you can enlighten me here as I've never understood the desire or need for <-> FireEagle integration.. what would be the benefit from allowing FireEagle to update your location? -
There's quite a few threads where people ask for the ability for Fire Eagle to update your location. I guess people think it'd be really nice to check into addresses instead of businesses. -
John, I think the fireeagle integration request is more for non-iPhone users. -
"check into addresses instead of businesses." What exactly do you mean? You can check into addresses, cross-streets, etc. You aren't restricted to just businesses on Brightkite. Maybe I'm not seeing exactly what you're saying here? :) -
@Amy I can _kind of_ see that.. but the days before the iPhone app I used SMS to update/post to Brightkite which is available on every phone. I'm still just trying to understand the luxory or benefit in being able to have FireEagle update your location. I don't want to be missing out on the fun if there is something I'm not seeing here. :) -
FE usefulness examples - photos/comments while hiking in the wilderness or on a boat fishing. lat/lon entries are cumbersome. Highway traffic reporting where it would be unsafe to "check in" but you can still utilize services like Jott.com to update via email. I would like to spend time commenting/taking photos of my location than trying to determine it. iPoki.com and skout.com are great examples but they lack the refinement of brightkite.com imho
FE already has the multi-platform support for determining location which takes the burden off of brightkite's dev team so they can focus on the core appication and features and not worry about how to grab GPS data from the phone fad of the month.
Another thought.. geocaching.com is a hot sport, future integration / (premium) features could be a spin off. -
@John Barker: Fire Eagle can only understand physical addresses. If you check into an address on brightkite, it won't complain. You can also check into a business at an address on brightkite, which is useful for addresses that have multiple businesses. In Fire Eagle, you can check into an office building. In Brightkite, you can check into an office. -
Inappropriate? This one's simple: After you accept a friend request, and you get the message saying that the request was successful, have the username become a link to that person's stream.
-
I also wish a Message in "Messages" after a Friends-Request has been accepted; not only a message as an SMS-notification! -
Inappropriate?A Blackberry Application.
-
Inappropriate?1) Editable posts
2) Edit your own comments (for maybe a 5min window, like digg)
3) Comment moderation (?)
4) Post tagging (this will help with Flickr integration)
hmmm, there's probably more :)

Forgot to add... when I get an email about a post from BK on my iphone, pen the iphone app rather than the web app. -
You can enable that in the Brightkite app's settings. It's off by default. -
That's for SMS rather than email. Would love to see it expanded to email. -
Inappropriate?I would definitely love to be able to do more with places. Rate them, reviews, mark them as "want to visit," create meetups with iCal reminders, etc. Basically, gobble up everything Whirrl and Meetup are doing so Brightkite can become about both people *and* places.
With that, I would also love to be able to use Brightkite as a sort of gallery for what I've done at a place. For example, I wish I could link my family and friends to something like brightkite.com/people/chartier/gallery/chicago to show them all the photos and notes I've posted in Chicago, IL. Going farther down this train of thought, it would be great to customize this, so I could create an event/album/gallery name, like "Dave Matthews Concert," and collect all the photos and notes I posted for that evening, including stuff from dinner, notes posted earlier in the day about being excited to go, etc.
I'm not sure how the UI and functionality would work for creating these, but I think it could be summarized easily: Brightkite can be about three things: people, places, and events.

Inappropriate?5) Better photo preview when posting through the iphone.
love the events/meetups idea amy! -
Inappropriate?Would also be nice to get some GPS usability on non iPhones.
-
Inappropriate?here's my wishlist
1: Block Ping.fm. I am so fed up with all the non-location-related junk I see. Haha, you made signups open so people who feel a need to microblog to every service because they're not really interested in a community but just see it as alternatives to RSS can join and post irrelevant junk! Nice!
2: Display the source of the posts! Web, Mobile Web, Ping.fm, etc!
3: Since it looks like Fire Eagle will never be as smart as Bright Kite and support 'trusted friends' options with a flag "this location is private" (I blogged about this), give me the option to limit what information I give to Fire Eagle. Preferably the option to see Fire Eagle as a non-trusted friend.

Displaying source of posts, yessss. Forgot to mention that one. Good call! -
Inappropriate?i wish that i could have the option to animate the 'visited places' map, i.e. you could specify a timeframe (eg. November 08 - December 08) and flags/markers would pop up in sequential order - if a place had been visited more than once, the flag could grow slightly larger or change colour.
I’m totally hoping
-
Inappropriate?I should add to this thread my intentions for the ideas.
I know BK has lot's of things already on thier list to get the service to a non-beta state. I was thinking of gathering ideas more for the 2.0 version. :)
I’m happy

Inappropriate?iPhone App
-----------------------------
1. Comment Stream
2. Map of friends and/or nearby users
3. Track/Untrack Comments
Brightkite Service
-----------------------------
1. Comment from within the comment stream like you can in the mentions stream.
2. Trends (like Twitter has)
3. Advanced search
4. When posting a note/photo, have the ability to prevent it from going to your shared social services
5. Ability to more intelligently name a location and/or add a location
6. Groups
7. Personal stats [like post/comment count etc.] (however this could probably be done through the API)
8. Business reviews (without taking from or cluttering Brightkite as it what it is today)
9. Comment from SMS
I'll add more as I think of them.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? The iphone app is missing the ability to open links posted in notes, as is the iPhone web app.

Yep, most definitely. That and @username links. -
Inappropriate?Less emphasis on the iPhone application and more emphasis on other platforms :)
Blackberry
Symbian
Windows Mobile
Android
etc
Thanks -
Inappropriate?Removal of the "Click to Continue" box when you have posted a photo/comment etc. Is this really needed?
-
Inappropriate?#1: Loopt-style (pin-drop) mapping online and especially on the iPhone app! I wanna see where my friends are on the map in relation to each other, or even see other users on the map. I have several friends that still use Loopt over Brightkite because of this feature alone, and I bet they aren't the only users you could pick up with this feature!
#2: MySpace status update support, plz. I have some friends/family stuck in 2 years ago that still use MySpace exclusively.
I’m hopeful.
-
And while we're at it, Internet Explorer 5.5 support, I have some friends/family stuck in 3 years ago and still use Mac OS X.3 Panther. -
Inappropriate?Hi all.
Your insight has been helpful in confirming some of our feature suspicions and reinforcing others already in progress.
Thanks for your 09 wishlist and cheers to a great year ahead!
I’m 09er
