My BrightKite is set to private and my Twitter won't update.
On the Account Settings page, on the Sharing tab, BrightKite should prevent me or warn me about entering my Twitter settings if I have my BrightKite set to Private.
Because otherwise I expect it to post what I have checked to my Twitter, and when it does not, I then have to go and search for why it's not working. I did find the answer here, in the Get Satisfaction website, but the way it currently functions seems counter-intuitive.
I hope this comes across as a critique and not as criticism, and I hope it helps to make your product better! (Yay Beta products!)

Inappropriate?Concerning privacy, its important Brightkite only updates Twitter while in public mode. The current text on the "Sharing" page states; "Your privacy settings apply." Its understandable that this may leave room for confusion. Thanks for the feedback, we will try to clarify further by updating the text.1 Comment

"Your privacy settings apply." I totally missed that text before. But, yes, it would be cool if it stuck out a little more and/or the wording was updated.
Is there a discussion or FAQ about why it is important that Brightkite only updates Twitter while in public mode?
For example, I don't want the general public to be able to know where I am. But I would want my Twitter friends on my private Twitter profile to know where I am. -
Inappropriate?I would really like this feature too. Because I have a private twitter account and I have a private Brightkite account. That just means that I don't want the WHOLE world knowing about things I'm doing. I still want to be able to use Brightkite and let my twitter friends know what I'm up to. There needs to be an inbetween privacy setting.

Inappropriate?I agree with jodiem.... if i allow sharing to twitter then it should work whether i'm set to priviate or not.... Twitter has it's own private and public setting that i can control there as well.
I'm loving the BrightKite service in all other aspects!!

Russell, we now have customizable Twitter settings if you go under Account Settings -> Sharing and click the "Customize" links. You can choose what information goes to Twitter regardless of your privacy settings. :)

Thanks for the reply Lesley, the customized settings look fine... my issue is probably a twitter problem due to their daily problems... i'll leave it private and watch it a few days. But it was like it worked fine until i made the profile private but now i've switched it on and off but doesn't seem to work either way

Inappropriate?I, too, agree with jodiem's point. I can control who sees my tweets in twitter.
Lesley: I wasn't able to find anything within the customize links that enabled posting when set to private. My updates continue to *not* to post to twitter. If I switch to public, the posts make it through fine.
But I don't want these updates to be public in Brightkite.

Inappropriate?We realize this is frustrating for a lot of people, so we are looking into a way to share activity with a private Twitter account. We don't have an ETA at this point, but keep an eye out for this feature.
