i know this may be a silly question, but must my privacy setting be set to "public" in order for my notes to be posted to twitter?

Inappropriate?Hi Susannah, to post to Twitter you must be in public mode. The reason is is Twitter has no privacy, we don't want your private posts going to twitter where anyone may see them.

this answers the question

I would also like to strongly support the idea that publication settings to Twitter can be tweaked in a more flexible manner. You really should be able to keep BK in private mode but still post regular messages to Twitter. I hope some kind of better solution for this can be found in the future. -
Inappropriate? How about using the "Everyone" privacy setting to determine Twitter posting instead? This would allow users to lock down location posting to Twitter the same as they do for Brightkite users/visitors, but still allow Twitter posting for private users.
-
I thought that was the way it currently worked. I've been in private mode and had notes I've posted show up on Twitter, and I have my 'Everyone' setting set to 'City'. People who follow me on Twitter can see my notes, but only the general location that they were posted in, which suits me just fine. -
Inappropriate? If I have a private twitter account and a private brightkite account, I should still be able to cross post between brightkite and twitter, otherwise really, what is the point of brightkite if my twitter friends can't see the posts also?
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?I would suggest making this more explicit on the help that is brought up by clicking on the question mark next to the private/public switch.
I’m confused.
-
Inappropriate?I agree, twitter should be able to be treated as a trusted friend... maybe if you would allow cross postings to be categorized from among Trusted Friends, Friends, and Everyone Else, and then let the appropriate security settings be applied.
twitter streams can now be protected, which mine is. I want to be able to put all of my bright kite content there as a trusted friend.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? My Twitter is private and so (officially) is my BrightKite but because I have elected to cross post to my (protected) Twitter then BrightKite shows my (allegedly private and 'locked') updates. This does not work!

Jamrock, in order to share your posts to Twitter your privacy will have to be set to city for "Everyone else", which means people on Brightkite will be able to see your activity, but they'll only see the city. Currently this is the only way to share your activity to Twitter while in private mode. We do not support sharing to a protected Twitter account, but this may happen down the road. If you are concerned about people seeing your activity on Brightkite, then you can set your privacy for "Everyone else" to hidden and only your friends will see your activity. -
Actually, let me correct myself. We do support sharing to a protected Twitter account, but those updates have to be set to city level on Brightkite. Sharing *hidden* updates to a Twitter account is something we may consider in the future. Sorry if I caused any confusion. -
Inappropriate?Like others, I have a private Twitter account, and had really hoped to share Brightkite updates with it. I don't want to make my Brightkite updates available to everyone, even if it's just at the city level. This is enough of an issue for me that I probably won't use Brightkite until/unless it's changed. I really love Brightkite, but Twitter is where my primary social network lives. :/
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? Also the 'offificial' response was wrong:
"Hi Susannah, to post to Twitter you must be in public mode. The reason is is Twitter has no privacy, we don't want your private posts going to twitter where anyone may see them."
Twitter obviously does have privacy. And all we want is to be able to cross post from Brightkite to Twitter while keeping our Brightkite info private as well as our Twitter info.
I love Brightkite. I don't use it because of this flaw. QED.
