The last new entry is from 12 hours ago, yet I see my friends updates in the BrightKite Universe.

What is your Brightkite username? Have you checked your filters? If you click the "Show Filters" link you can enable/disable check ins, notes, and photos from appearing in your stream. It's possible one or more of these got disabled.
