What's up with "Visited Places"?
My "Visited Places" page started showing funny stuff this morning, like places for countries (two different ones for the Netherlands) and for regions (like Dutch provinces) with much higher check in counts than I've checked into any place on Brightkite yet. It even included places I've never been to. What's up? (Check your Twitter account as well for more information.)

Inappropriate?Hi peSHIr, sorry for the confusion. This behavior is actually intended. Your list for Visited Places now includes separate entries for the city/state/country for every place you've been. So for example, I may not have explicitly checked in to the US, but since all of my checkins have been within the US it is implied that I've checked in to the US x amount of times. The same goes for Denver and any other city in the greater Denver area. I haven't ever explicitly checked into Glendale, CO but it is the closest city to some of the places I have visited, so I have a listing for it.

The duplicate listings that are showing up are something that we're currently working on, we hope to have the majority of those merged in the near future.

Inappropriate? After seeing such a large number of people confused by this change, we decided to revert back to how it was before. Expect to see this back to normal soon. Very sorry for the confusion.

Inappropriate?I'm seeing places I've never been before in my list of visited places, and there are places I've been that aren't in the list. For example, Brightkite shows me as having checked in 24 times in Partido Judicial de Pamplona, in northern Spain, as recently as 20 hours ago, and I've never been there. I was in Valencia, Spain, 20 hours ago, but that's a considerable distance from northern Spain.
On the other hand, I have checked in in Dubai, but that no longer shows up (at least in Map View, where it used to show up).
I understand that if I've been anywhere in the U.S., then U.S. will be a visited place. But it doesn't make sense to show that in the map view, since it shows a very specific pinpoint at a location I've never been anywhere near. The same goes for any country or state--the map specifically pinpoints somewhere I've never been.
There are some other oddities--Alaska, US and AK, US are two different places in two different locations, even though they're both Alaska.
I'm glad you're backing this out. I can see the idea, but, especially in Map View, it doesn't make much sense. -
Inappropriate? As an example of how the Map View makes no sense with this new way of displaying visited places, if a brand new user makes his first check-in in Miami, Florida, his map view will right away indicate that he has checked in in Miami, and also on the west coast of Florida somewhere north of Tampa (which I guess is what Brightkite considers the geographical center of Florida), and also either in southeastern or north central Kansas (two locations Brightkite uses for the center of the United States). So Brightkite will pinpoint three locations, very far from each other, for a user who has checked in just once.

Inappropriate?I've never checked in whilst visiting the US but I have some USA locations in my stream. I think these are from locations when BK didn't understand my location and I get the text reply such as "Are you sure you want to check in at Berkley CA?". I thought these only showed up if you replied with Y. I'm confused.
-
Inappropriate? Not sure I like this cause I almost deleted those extra things which in turn would have deleted my posts at any of those 600+ locations.
I’m unsure

Inappropriate?I've never checked into some places in the US yet they're showing up on my visited places list.
I’m unsure

We're working on fixing those, it's just taking a little longer than we thought. -
Inappropriate? This has been a problem for a while now, why is it so hard to just undo whatever it is you screwed up?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Would you please make places I actually checked into behave different than the "implied enclosing area's" (city, state, country, etc) that you seem to be adding? Like not showing them on maps? And not showing them in the "Visited places?" page which I often use the check back into places I've been before? I am not likely to check into the generic places the website is now adding for me. If I are to check into any of them, it will be through a search for that place or through a placemark I manually added through the website earlier from a desktop PC. (I mostly use brightkite on my mobile phone.)
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Lesley, is there an estimate on how long this is going to take it's been a month now.
-
Very sorry for the delay, we have a lot on our plate at the moment. This should be taken care of this week. -
Lesley,
Two week have come and have gone agin Still the issue is not resolved. Any new estimate ? -
We're in the middle of redesigning some things on the site and it didn't make sense for us to put the time into changing this when it is going to change anyway with our redesign. We realize this is frustrating a lot of our users, so we really appreciate your patience. -
Lesley, I'm not frustrated about it that much. And communicating the redesign intentions helps a lot in getting some understanding for the situation. Thanks a lot for doing that.. -
This week was a month ago..., problem still exists! -
Inappropriate?I can understand the appeal of using something more general (state, country, etc) but by showing it on my list of places and on the map of places I've visited, it's confusing. Perhaps adding an option to disable the visited places from showing from your list, or from displaying on the map might be an alternative?
-
Inappropriate? We implemented a quick fix that hides those higher level checkins from showing in your Visited Places list and map. Sorry this took so long.

this solves the problem

As usual you guys rock! -
Inappropriate? Thanks for sorting this out Lesley, in spite of the usual ingratitude that comes from users of a free service ;-)
I've still got one visited location in the US that I've never been to though.
I’m slightly happy
-
That rogue checkin is a curious one, we'll see if we can delete that for you. -
Inappropriate?Hi Lesley, I still have four USA checkins on my visited places list. Please can you delete those for me?
-
We'll take a look at both yours and djryan's check ins to see if we can take care of those. It might take us a few days, but we'll get to it as soon as we can. :)
