Why can't I search for nearby users?
It would make sense to be able to search for people who are often nearby where I am - i.e. other users in my hometown/city (in my case, Anchorage, Alaska).
People obviously shouldn't show up if they're marked as private, but for those who don't mind, like myself, it'd be nice to be able to hook up through brightkite.com (-:

Inappropriate?Elliott, I agree that a nearby search would be very useful. We will likely add support for that sometime down the road. In the meantime, if you go to your Around Me tab it will list nearby users on the right side of the page. Also, if you go to a location's placestream it will list most recent visitors on the right side of the page. Hope that helps.

What about implementing an SMS/e-mail interface for that feature? -
Kichigai, we do have plans for that, but no ETA right now. :) -
Inappropriate?Hey! Thanks, that certainly worked to some extent - although it's slightly annoying to manually check each user, to see which have left anchorage or were just visiting (especially relevant here, as we have a _lot_ of tourism)
I’m better

Inappropriate?I'd definitely like this feature to be added. Just simply out of curiosity of who, if anyone, in my area is using this new social network
-
Todd Jones: As Lesley suggested; try searching for your 'wider area' in the places search (for instance, I had to search for Alaska instead of my city, for some reason, my city didn't show everybody that had checked in there). Then you can scroll through the placestream for the 'regulars'. -
That was it! Even with a wide search like that, there were still only 5-6 people in my state. I'll be looking forward to watching it grow -
Inappropriate? You can now see all of the users checked in around you in the "People Near Me" section. More on that here: http://blog.brightkite.com/2008/07/30...
