Why does Brightkite (via mobile phone) only work for the US?
Why not support the UK mobile operators? We're practically the 51st state!

Inappropriate?Hiro was very helpful and suggested the use of long/lat when setting up Placemarks. From there it's pretty easy... in the UK, Japan.. wherever!
(Written from Nagoya, Japan)
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Searching for addresses should work fine for both Japan and the UK...you just can't use SMS...but MMS messages via email work.

Inappropriate?What about Australia?
-
Inappropriate? The reason is probably because those mobile numbers cost a TON. $5k a month or something? They would have to buy a number in the UK too, as well as any other countries.
-
Inappropriate?A similar situation to Twitter would be ideal. Numbers for the US, Canada, and UK, and everyone outside of those countries uses the UK number. (Not sure about everyone else, but it doesn't seem to cost me any more to send an SMS to the UK than it does locally in Australia).
Alternative: utilise the Twitter API to receive commands FROM Twitter (perhaps with a "BK:" prefix?) - for which many people already have set up for mobile phone use, and alleviates the need for Updating Yet Another Service. -
Inappropriate?Shehaal, I'm in Melbourne and just sent a note to Brightkite using email over MMS. Which provider are you using? Although I admit being able to use SMS would be a nicer option.
-
Inappropriate?@digitalsprawl I'm using Optus. Trying it now, but it doesn't look hopeful.
-
Inappropriate?I tried earlier using Vodafone, but it doesn't look like it worked.
-
Inappropriate?Okay so the email from my phone worked. :P But still, took ages to send and yes, SMS (even international) would be significantly easier/quicker.
-
We're working on getting things in place to support international SMS, but we don't have an ETA just yet. We know this is frustrating for a lot of our users, so please bear with us. :) -
Thanks Lesley. I was just curious to know how things were progressing. Really looking forward to SMS updates (would they be free to receive but cost to send - like Twitter? If so, then I'd be interested in switching over between platforms BrightKite has a lot more to offer!)
