Malfunction - bubbling for a range of time
Huh. Don't know if you understand what I wrote in the topic but here is what happened:
I clicked on one bubble to fill out just one (without holding shift). BubbleTimer acted as if I had been holding shift and filled out bubbles for several hours and overwrote all activities of the day :(
So PLEASE check if you can find the problem (I don't like to rethink a whole day) :(
Another helpful option would be an "undo"-button.
I am using Firefox 3 on Mac OS X 10.5.6.
Kind regards,
cephyr

Inappropriate?cepyhr,
Hmm... that's no good. I use FF3 on a Mac as my main development environment and I've never seen this problem (and I guarantee no one has bubbled as many bubbles as I have!) But that does little to make your problem go away, I know. Do let me know if you see it again and I'll think through what an undo implementation would look like. It's now on the list.
Sorry!
Sean
I’m thinking about undo
-
Inappropriate?Another thing could be an "Are you sure?" dialog if you are shift bubbling in a way that will overwrite other times. What do you think of that?
-Sean -
Inappropriate?Sean,
thank you for your response. I would prefer a "Do you either want to overwrite or just bubble without overwriting activities" dialog. Sometimes I am doing two activities simultaneously and it is annoying to alt-click countless bubbles.. ;) -
Cephyr,
Little known fact... you can alt-shift-click too... to bubble a range of simultaneous bubbles. Is this what you need for the "alt-click countless bubbles" bit, or am I all confused now?
Thanks,
Sean -
Did not know that- works and fits my needs :)
Btw: The problem appeared again. I filled out one bubble, switched to another tab, switched back, bubbled another bubble of the same activity, and it behaved as if I had been holding shift..
Thank you. -
It goes without saying that I don't walk around touting the alt-shift-click bubbling feature! :-) In fact, that it works is just an accident. The alt code and the shift code both kick in and happen to do the right thing. It wasn't a requirement. But it is a happy coincidence.
I'll test some tab switching and see if I can recreate the problem. What browser/OS?
Thanks,
Sean -
I've tried but I cannot recreate the problem on purpose.
Still Mac OS X 10.5.6 with Firefox 3 ;) -
Cephyr,
I also wasn't able to make it happen. Given that it's so intermittent, we might just need to rely on the warning dialog.
Do let me know if it happens often enough to be a real problem or if you are able to recreate it or detect a pattern. I'd love to solve the root cause too.
Thanks,
Sean -
Inappropriate?I can't recreate it either, but it definitely sometimes happens to me too (using Google Chrome and Windows XP). If I could pin it down, I would've reported it already.
However, there is one thing I'm waiting to test again: I think you can *see* when it's about to happen.
First, notice that when you shift-click the second bubble to fill in a stretch of time, there is an underline that appears on the first in the series. I think the underline might be visible right before the "buggy filling in of a stretch of bubbles even if shift is not pressed" event.
When trying to recreate it, I noticed that if you shift-click to erase across two contiguous patches of bubbles with some other bubble in between the patches of time, the other bubble will erase too (not on the same activity as what you're attempting to erase). This is probably not related to the originally posted bug, but it is (in a sense) "overwriting" something that shouldn't be.
I’m feeling thoughtful.

It happened again. No underline to indicate that it was about to happen. Lost three hours of my life ... I mean, of today's record. -
Inappropriate?I've noticed this 'underline' thing too several times. I didn't experience any real bug though, so I didn't really pay attention to it.
-
Inappropriate?I did finally see this myself... and I was QUITE annoyed because it wiped out almost a full day of bubbling.
I do have a hunch:
Cephyr, you mentioned you mostly see it while using tabs. Unless testing or developing, I use BubbleTimer in Fluid (a site specific browser that uses Safari) so I don't use it in tabs except for development. I wonder if a shift on another tab... or even a shift in the Add Activity name is carrying over and affecting the next bubble.
Immediately I'll get the warning dialog in place. The other thing I think I'll try is making the shift expire and I'll explore my hunch and see if I can recreate it that way. We'll go from there.
Thanks,
Sean -
I don't usually use BubbleTimer in tabs, but in a separate Chrome window entirely (because it's been made into an "Application Shortcut" in my Quick Launch bar). But I too have suspected there may be something to do with switching from BubbleTimer to something else and back... -
I just yelled at my computer, and it wasn't my computer's fault. I feel bad now. I should've just calmly come here to request that you please put the warning dialog in place... -
Inappropriate?I'm working on it this morning. Hope to have it in very soon.
Thanks,
Sean
