Pie chart display non-existent; pie chart cut off
Two problems with the (very nice and useful) pie chart display: 1) For some reason unknown to me, I will only get the pie chart in the weekly total view if select a date range no greater than one (1) week. No pie chart for 8 days or more. 2) Information in total pie chart cut off. At the bottom of the pie chart image, descriptive text "disappears". I think this is because I have quite a few items I am tracking and it's too much for the standard display. Screenshots of both problems attached.

Inappropriate?josh.w,
This is quite odd. I myself don't experience this problem, but am quite interested in it and wish to look into it. If you would be so kind as to email me from the email address you signed up with, I can look through and see what might be causing it.
Regards,
Eric
You'll find my email address below. Spider bots are nasty little buggers, aren't they?
I’m interested

Inappropriate?Josh,
It appears to be something to do with the characters in your activity names. The characters that have various accent marks and umlauts. I'm working on finding a way to gracefully handle all of these marks.
Regards,
Eric
UPDATE: I think I've got it, and will be doing some testing to ensure it's working before it gets pushed to the server. -
Inappropriate?Josh,
On another update, I have confirmed I know what the problem is. Unfortunately, it's not something on BubbleTimer's end. Google Charts API (what we use to generate the nice pie and line graphs) imposes a URL length of 2047 characters. This is all nice, until we start cramming more and more data into the url. I'm researching alternatives now.
Regards,
Eric
I’m annoyed with URL limits.

Inappropriate?Josh,
Eric and I discussed the problem at length today and have a solution in mind. Normally I try to have reported bugs fixed in just a couple days but unlike a normal bug fix, this one means we need to change our charting technologies so it'll be some time before we can fix it.
Thanks for being such an active person that your bubbling stretched the limit and thanks even more for taking the time to post the detailed bug report here. I'll keep you informed of the status here.
Thanks,
Sean
I’m unhappy I picked a technology with a fatal flaw.

Inappropriate?Eric, Sean,
Thank you for your great support! Trial and error is part of the game, I guess, and I am looking forward to seeing this fixed.
Keep up the good work!
Kind regards,
Josh
I’m confident there'll be a good solution down the road
-
Thank you for understanding.
-Sean -
Inappropriate?1) Yeah! The pie chart is there again! It is showing, how cool is that! Thank you! :-D
2) Uh-oh, wait. The "slices" seem to be disproportional. 25 hours look like 45 look like 70. What's up with that? Can you see it, too?
Kind regards,
Josh -
Josh,
I'm not seeing any disproportional hours. No.
If you are still seeing this, can you post a screen shot (you can black out the activity names) or contact me by email?
Thanks,
Sean -
Inappropriate?Sean,
Please excuse me for taking a little longer to get back to you. I have been pretty busy these days.
Please see the attached screen shot for what I mean. I picked three entries to exemplify the problem (enclosed in read rectangles). 203 hours look like 130 hours which look like 32 hours. Obviously they should differ in size, shouldn't they?
Kind regards,
Joshua
I’m confident that things will work out well
-
Inappropriate?Heh, that's pretty weird indeed. And I confirm that the same thing happens with me. 83 hours is looking the same as 24 in my case among other discrepancies.
-
Inappropriate?Josh, Tijl,
They really should look different of course. Not sure if it's my problem or Google charts problem (which... is still my problem). I'll dig into it and fix it and let you know.
Thanks,
Sean -
Inappropriate?Josh, Tijl,
Eric dug into this problem yesterday and we were able to isolate the problem to Google Charts. That's lame and an excuse and I don't like having to answer with it, but unfortunately there is no quick fix.
The plan is to move to Flex based charting to resolve both of these problems, the data slices not being the right size as well the information being cut off. I'll keep this topic updated with the progress on that.
Thanks,
Sean -
Sean,
Thank you very much for being so involved in all this, I really appreciate it. I was afraid something like this would come out of your investigation, but hey, at least we now know what the problem is. And I am looking forward to see you work out this one as well just as you did with the other ones. Thanks for everything! Keep up the great work! -
Thanks Josh. You are too kind. -
Inappropriate? These issues with the Google Charts are getting a little long in the tooth. Some of the initial problems were reported months ago now so let me layout where this stands in relation to everything else.
There are 3 project sized features on the plate right now:
Notes - Eric is working on this, good progress
Categories - Had some good progress but has been idle for a bit. This is truly a big one, impacts the data model quite a bit. It's the single biggest thing attempted since launch.
Moving off Google Charts - 3rd on this list but very important.
Intermixed with these project sized efforts are the day to day tweaks, improvements and bug fixes that are done in minutes or hours. Of particular note in these is that I am behind on getting the weekly goals worked into the print outs, exports and the iPhone UI and in getting the planning bubbles in the iPhone UI. I'll be knocking those out before the charting work.
Thanks,
Sean
