Summary reporting, data viz
Hi, I like the idea of BT tho I don't know if I'd get in the habit of updating it everyday - I'd like to think so. Perhaps if there were mechanisms in place to help remind me to update (ie an email "Hi, doesn't look like you've done ANYTHING today - you might want to login and update") - but the main idea I had was about access to summary information. I noticed the graphs that appear when you hover over time spent data on the right but it's still pretty hard to make sense of it, especially when you have goals with excluded days. It's nice - but still doesn't give me a sense of how well I'm doing against goals.
Perhaps a Summary page with activities plotted against days with a default 2-week history and then date range parameters to change it with some graphical device used to convey per-day achievements against goal and then overall over the period of time displayed.
So if I didn't do anything against an activity on a day where I had a >2 hour goal set that might be a big red dot. If I got 1.5 hours done then maybe a small red dot. If I achieved a goal, then a green dot. If I had >30 min exercise goal and ended up doing 2 hours might be a big green dot.
Just an easy way of quickly determining my progress against my goals per day and over time.
Cheers,

Inappropriate?Nathanael,
For individual goals, we have the line graph which by default displays the 7 day progress. You can also click on the links which on hover over have a default time span and then drill down how you want the specific time range to display.
I believe this is something similar to what you want, but please feel free to correct me if I am incorrect, and we can try and discuss in a bit more detail what it is you are wanting.

Eric
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Ah nice one - that certainly makes it easier to read the graph, but what I was suggesting was more like this:

This is just using variable red graphics and fixed-size green so the totals don't really make sense; if you were to look at this sort of overall summary reporting then that'd need to be something to figure out ... but hopefully you can see what I'm getting at. Just some way of at a quick glance see how I'm doing against my goals, identifying problem days, activities where I need to revise my goals etc.
I’m silly

Inappropriate?Nathanael,
Very nice. I like that a lot. This fits in well with a bevy of better visualization ideas that have been discussed here. In particular, there is a desire for a graphical summary for the day as a whole, which I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet, and an idea for a heat map so you can see how your days have been going by hour... what times of the day are you doing activities you want to be doing and when not.
But I like this one A LOT. It's simpler and maybe even more useful than the other two. I think I'll all 3 but in my mind this is now at the top of the list.
Thanks for the great idea.

Inappropriate? In my own defense, while I do like Nathaneal's idea of plotting performance for days vs. goal subjects, it serves a slightly different purpose than my own request of plotting performance for days vs. time of day. The former can tell you which days you have been performing well on particular subjects, the latter can tell you which days you have been performing well in general and can tell you what parts of each day your efficiency was lacking.
I think they also serve different kinds of people. I think Nathaneal's plot especially serves people that are already performing quite well and are now looking to track specific goals, while the latter plot especially serves people that are having trouble getting *anything* done and want to know when they are losing that time.
I'm guessing that people will evolve from my plot to Nathaneal's plot as they become more successful in getting time spent usefully and become more concerned with the particular goals they are trying to achieve. To be honest I'm one of those people that is still a bit stuck in the first stage...
Or am I seeing things wrong?
I’m hoping there will be a way to visualize performance for everyone optimally.

Inappropriate?Tijl,
No need for the defense! I think your time of day heat map is fantastic... I wasn't super clear in my response. I plan to implement both. I plan to start with Nathanael's because it's simpler for me to implement. I think both are easy to understand, both require nothing additional than how you already interact with BubbleTimer (which is the best part), and both are very useful.
I'll have to think a little bit more about your idea that you'd graduate from 1 being more useful to the other as you went from unproductive to productive but maybe not at the right things. I can see it that way, but I can also see that both are useful to someone like me who is both productive and productive on the right things, but wants to be MORE productive on those things. It'll help me to know how I'm doing at times of the day and days of the week to better schedule my productive time (and to be more aware of when I need to pour on the willpower).
Thanks,
Sean
I’m looking forward to having these visualizations.

Inappropriate? Thanks for clearing that up a little ;). As for graduating from one plot to the other... "I think" was probably an overstatement, it's more of a gut feeling that I have really. Either way, I definitely agree that both plots will be useful.
I’m soooo wanting those visualizations. I need to be able to say: "Tijl, wow! All that green, you're doing great! Or "Tijl, nice work, but you need to work on that procrastinating in the morning. Too much red there."
