The chime is not chiming for me.
So, I hear no chime, or whatever the sound is supposed to be. The icon in the top right corner has the sound wave lines, and on hover-over it says "Turn off the 15 min. chime" -- that means it's on, right? (Thought so.) I click it off, then click it back on, and all looks as it should. I decide I want to try with the chime, so I leave it on.
But it doesn't chime. I make certain my volume level is at a normal listening level, by listening to something else. I check that everything else is set right. Then I wait .. and hear no chime.
Next, I try keeping the BubbleTimer tab visible when the chime is supposed to go off, so I can be listening carefully at the right moment (which shouldn't be necessary, right?) but I was moving around in my chair at the moment of turning... is the chime just a click sound, or was that my chair making that noise?
(I'm using Google Chrome in Windows XP.)

It doesn't provide the audio chime for Chrome... but there is no a visual chime every 15 minutes in the form of a nagging tab/title bar. You don't need the audio chime turned on for this to work.
Thanks,
Sean

Went through some planning over the weekend. Even though my hope was to close all known bugs before moving onto some of the big features we have planned, I'm afraid they'll be one left open, and it's this one. The bug only affects Webkit on Windows (Chrome and Safari on Windows) and there is no obvious quick fix for it. As such... the plan is to leave it open until after the next round of feature requests is complete, so it'll probably be a month or more before we get back to this.
Is not ideal... but at some point I just have to make the call to stop polishing what's there and add some needed capabilities.
Thanks,
Sean

Inappropriate?Qrystal,
We've done some testing and confirmed that the problem isn't just you and it seems to affect only Chrome. We're working on it.
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Nah, don't be sad, it's a good call on your part. There are dozens of other ways to make a chime if I want one, and I haven't bothered -- it's not totally a necessary, dealbreaking thing.
Keep up the great work! :)
I’m cheerful!

Thanks for understanding.

Inappropriate?Opera now seems to have the same problem, at least in it's latest version. I have BubbleTimer running in Opera on my tower at work where the chime works great. It's not the latest version though. Recently purchased a laptop. set it all up with up-to-date software, and BubbleTimer in Opera does not chime.
Just thought I would let you know. Am missing the chime somehow, as it's a great reminder to ask myself, hey, what the heck have you been doing for fifteen/another fifteen/oh no! another fifteen minutes. :-)
Thanks for all the effort you keep putting into BubbleTimer. My fiancee and I just love using it!
I’m hopeful I'll someday hear the chime again.

Inappropriate?Josh,
I'm glad you and your fiancee are loving using BubbleTimer.
I'll look into Opera too when I work on Chrome. What it comes down to is the browser needs to know how to play an MP3. That's the format the chime is in. I can't imagine why that would change from one version of Opera to another. What's probably different on your laptop is not the new version of Opera but the plugins and other software you have installed over time. Some thing has given Opera on your tower the ability to play an MP3.
Take a look at the extensions configuration in Opera on your tower and on your laptop and see if you can't spot the difference. Let me know what you find out.
Thanks,
Sean
I’m at a silent Opera.

Inappropriate?Sean,
Thank you for getting back to me on this. I hear you, but unfortunately I know too little about Opera to be able to say, hey, I've checked everything and I have fixed it/ruled that option out. But I would expect Opera to be able to play MP3s "out of the box" on a pretty run-of-the-mill Windows Vista machine with Windows Media Player and MP3 support all set up, don't you agree? But then again, there really might have been something that enabled it in Opera on my tower without me recalling/realizing it.
If anyone has any more hints on what to check, I'd gladly read them here, because I would love to get that chime back. Btw, the option to enable/disable sound on a web page is set to "enable".
Kind regards,
Josh
P.S.: Sean, thank you very much for being so engaged in providing outstanding customer support!
I’m somewhat at wit's end with Opera and my beloved chime.
-
Sean,
Just a quick note - QuickTime seems to have done it! I just installed QuickTime, because I wanted to watch something in Firefox, and as I opened Opera for bubbling some time, I heard the chime for the first time! So somehow QuickTime seems to have added MP3 support to Opera. If it stays this way, I'm happy! 8^)
Kind regards,

Josh,
That's awesome! I'm really glad you have the chime back. It's a little bit of a black art how any given browser is working with the media playing software to play an MP3 for you. It's a black enough art anyway that I can't pretend to know the exact settings controlling it across all browsers and operating systems. I'm glad to hear (pun intended) that the QuickTime install did the trick though! It's becoming my default recommendation to people that can't hear the chime. Install or re-install QuickTime and that seems to fix it for most people. I'll write up a FAQ entry for it.
Thanks,
Sean -
Inappropriate?My turn, my turn!
I just installed the latest version of QuickTime, in case by some fluke it helped me in Chrome.
It didn't fix it. Just so ya know! :)
I use a separate program for chimes and timers: it's called TimeLeft. You can select your own sound clip for an alarm. I'm using a gong right now, though the quality is rather poor and I'm looking for a replacement. Maybe I'll go with the crowd saying "OooOOOooo!" (Both found at ilovewavs.com.)
I’m amused. :)

Qrystal,
Yeah, I would have expected that. The problem on Chrome is a bit different. No browser plays an MP3 on it's own. It relies on QuickTime or Media Player or VLC or some other plugin. Chrome doesn't seem to want to work with these even though Safari does and they both use Webkit. I may end up switching to Flash to play the sounds to get Chrome to work. It's still on my list... but about half way down...
Thanks,
Sean -

I read this over a few times to figure out what you meant... a little typo got in the way, it seems! "...but there is NOW a visual chime..." :) (This typo is also on the official Recent Updates page.)
Anyways, thanks! I think this will work wonderfully. ...Hmm, though there should've been some notification a moment ago, and I saw nothing. Reloading the page, waiting for next bubbletime...
...(tick-tock-tick-tock)...
...nope, still nothing. No wait! Not nothing: the blue bar indicating the current time is gone! Reloading... the bar's still gone! Oddness?
...Oh but there's the indicator! That's cool! [Time to Update!] -
Inappropriate? The typo in the official update is fixed. I'm afraid I have a now/no/know learning disability of profound proportions. I've stopped fighting it at this point in my life and instead I embrace it. It's like a fingerprint to my writing. If you don't see at least one homophone mix-up then I guarantee you I didn't write it. Stop the impostor!
I'll look at the blue bar for the current time. Can't have that go away. One thing to note about the visual chime is that it only "chimes" if the BubbleTimer tab or window doesn't have focus. And you may have noticed, it stops chiming when the tab or window gets focus again (whether you bubble anything or not).
I'm pretty sure this un-focus/focus behavior is actually what will work best. It only seems a little funky when you are trying to test the visual chime.
Off to look at the blue bar.
Thanks,
Sean -
Inappropriate? The blue current time bar is back in Safari 3 and Google Chrome where it had gone missing since Friday.
Thanks,
Sean

Inappropriate?Thank you thank you thank you! I am so happy to see the blue bar back!
I also have been very much enjoying the "visual chime" as a reminder to update! It is enough to remind me to be doing the things I intend to do, instead of the random meandering that sometimes happens when the Internet Black Hole sucks me in. Thanks so much!
I’m always happy when bugs are squished! :D

That's entirely too many thank you's for fixing a bug! I won't accept them. I'll take just 1, and that, for the visual chime. I also allocate one of your thank you's to ph0rque who posted the original request for the visual chime.
Cheers,

Inappropriate?Chrome has fixed itself! What a lovely chime sound, now that I can hear it! :)

Inappropriate?Qrystal,
Is the chime still chiming on Chrome on Windows?
Joel seems to be having an issue with it (Windows 7).

The chime is still working fine in Chrome on Windows Vista. Haven't checked on my XP box in awhile though.
