3D Icons
What about actual 3 dimensional icons. The technology is there and you think of bumptop as a link to the real world desktop. But most people have several cluttered toys and trinkets that will enhance their work environment.
Imagine when the new spore game is out and they load one of their iconic characters as the "bumptop icon" but it moves around the desk or remains in one place and occasionally hops or just remains stationary like a doll.
Or for minesweep you could just make a 3D iconic landmine that if you allow the company to customize the loading animation, it explodes when you click on it.
Most of this is speculative and I realize is probably not going to be possible for the first release but hopefully will be implemented some time in the future.

Inappropriate?Its a neat idea and we have thought about it. It would really be nice if our icons had more of a 3D nature to them. Unfortunately the problem is doing this in a generic way for all types of icons. And if some fall through the cracks the 2D ones will look odd next to the 3D ones

Inappropriate?Will that kind of functionality be supported though? I understand that there are a ton of different icons out there and making one 3D puts the burden of making them all 3D, for the reasons you mentioned, but I'd love to add like a little choo choo train or something to my desktop and I can certainly justify hard disks having shape while the pdfs and mp3s and jpegs being relatively flat.
On a related note, how open will this platform be for desktop mod fiends who like to change their icons and the like? I assume general icons are imported from windows, which can be changed by a third party program like icon packager before hand, but how would you import these 3D icons? Would they just fall under widgits? Speaking of which, will there be widgit functionality and will that be open to community development?

Inappropriate?Thanks for the feedback! Although there are many features we'd love to add, our priority right now is pushing out a solid 1.0 release of BumpTop. At the moment BumpTop does not have any customization APIs, but that is one of our eventual goals. Widgets and 3D objects are definitely something people have asked about and we've definitely thought about them for the future.

Inappropriate?That's a great idea! I've been really impressed with BumpTop while playing around with it but now all I can think about is how awesome it would be to have a creature from Spore or something walking around my desktop and playing with my icons. Or even something much simpler, imagine a paintbrush laying there for Photoshop, a little foxglobe rolling around for Firefox, etc. So long as it's popular enough (and I have no doubt it will be), the community could supply models for icons without a 3d version

Inappropriate?Community contributed 3D models for icons is an excellent idea! And we could draw on the existing models at Google's 3D Warehouse.
In fact, there seems to be one fore firefox already

My messenger screen on the bumptop... with the contacts each pivoted up like the LCD screen on a standard calculator.
