A 3D recycle bin icon
How about adding a 3D recycle bin icon, wherein we could throw our unused files?
I would love to see that in the app., that would make the whole thing appear more user friendly. :)

Shikhar

Thanks for the feedback. 3D Icon support is on our todo list. :)

Do you happen to have a sort of roadmap for this project, such as sourcforge.net has and code.google.com? -
Inappropriate?that would be very cool, you could literally crumple something up and shoot it in the basket
-
Inappropriate?oh yeah! theres a 3D bin in " real desktop " its realy nice
I’m still waiting for invite :(
-
No, that ones pretty sucky.. :( -
Inappropriate? It certainly would rock! It could also have certain scripts set up with it so if something goes in there(thrown in) it shrinks, the more stuff in it the more it shrinks so there's always room. You could un-delete stuff by dragging the file out. Finally to empty it you could right click(or whatever is used to open up the menu(I'm not in beta =-()) and select it to be emptied(the files could then have a cool burn animation for each one). Just so this could be more compatible with certain programs, files that are recovered from total deletion could fall from the sky, or float down(again I have no idea how bumptop does new icons and such).
I’m very excited

Cool! maybe make the base circle smoother as its looking a little jaggy at the top of the bin. Also, maybe a vista styled one would be appropriate? Either way, thanks! -
I'd love to use it. But BumpTop is still broken. http://getsatisfaction.com/bumptop/to... http://getsatisfaction.com/indakindde... -
This doesn't work with my normal Windows desktop! -
Inappropriate? If 3D icons could be incorporated, what file format would you most likely need?
-
Not sure yet. Maybe COLLADA, but we need to take a better look at this. Its really hotly requested so you may see it in a version 2.0 -
Inappropriate?*Updated*
Smooth Curves
Doubled Polygons Used
Added Vista Recycle Bin
Changed Vista Recycle Arrows to Blue
Used Green Background for Comparison
What do you think?
I’m amazing!
-
I'd go with the white one, and I think you should try to add a curve like with the XP recycling bin(I'm a major XP FTW guy =-P) -
I agree with the curve. Also, maybe make the Recycle graphic less transparent? And give the XP recyclebin a touch of blue. And make the Vista recycle bin be a mesh style. And and and. hah. -
I like the black one the best ^^ -
Inappropriate? But I liked it being a bit transparent *sad*. It's possible to add a touch of blue though. As for mesh style...why?
Both models were created based on the icons themselves.
Anyway, can they be used? And in what format should I send if requested? -
Inappropriate?nice bin JK3, I like your idea though I agree with Anand
-
Inappropriate?*Updated*
Added Curve (Smooth)
Added Touch of Blue
Removed Transparency

Anything else?
By the way Anand, did you see the animations i sent you?
I’m not sure this helped
-
Cool! Unfortunatley I haven't seen any animations.
We've got a really full plate ahead of our public release and 3D Icon support is probably more a version 2.0 feature. But we're def keeping it in mind as its hotly requested! -
I think designing around Windows 7 will be the best, as Windows 7 will be the OS that people will jump on, rather than the abomination that is vista. -
Inappropriate?I actually much prefer JK3's original recycle bin image (without the jagged edges) to all the others. Nice work, JK3. :-)
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? How about when you want to find a file in the recycle bin you can click an option to "dump it". Imagine you have a lot of papers and you crumpled them and threw them out. To get the paper you want back, you could go through a bunch of crumpled papers. So essentially you would "tip over" the recycle bin (with the physics provided) and it would spill out. Of Course i think this should be a "toggle-able" option in the settings panel.
I’m happy to contribute

Inappropriate? My recycle bin isnt even visible right now...
But this is a great idea :)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Well if you don't mind resetting your desktop, take the advice that I took. First make sure it's on the original desktop. If it's not, Go to settings--->General---> Restore BumpTop Layout. This way, everything should come back again.
-
Inappropriate?could someone make up a paper shredder? Might be cooler than the trash can.
cool idea: line up the trash can against the wall, and have a basketball game where you try and make it! -
Inappropriate?Well the recycle bin idea is more practical, considering your files aren't actually lost when you toss them in it. Also, The recycle bins are based on XP and Vista themes.
-
Inappropriate?JK3, what is that done in, if it is 3ds or maya, we could probably make a simple paper being thrown away animation.
-
Inappropriate? Why would you make an animation? I thought it would be used as a 3d model. I wouldn't mind if you did an animation though. Anyway I did this with 3D Studio Max 2008.
-
Inappropriate?I think Mac OS X Leopard icons is great ...That is most suitable for the project...
-
Don't you think it will be inappropriate to use Mac icons for a Windows software? (Unless of course you are planning to emulate it like with FlyAKiteOSX, etc.) -
i think it's a cool idea but you could change them up a little bit -
Inappropriate?Cool idea. May be the utility of this icon is enhanced by displaying it on each folder that is bumped. Probably in the top/bottom right corner so it will be easier to throw things into. Another usage may be, when clicked on it, to show only those items that were deleted from the current folder only, instead of showing the path. Optionally, all items in the recycle bin may be exposed on click of a button. I believe with these features it can be called 'rebump bin' instead of recycle bin although deleted files are shown in normal recycle bin as usual.
-
Inappropriate?I would really like a 3D recycle bin that if clicked, would kind of "fold out" its contents and let you scroll through it using your animation of choice (grid, foldout, etc).
I’m confident

I really like this idea too actually. We've been thinking of treating the recycle bin like a pile before. -
Inappropriate?I think a pit or dip in the desktop itself would be a better way of doing this.
The pit should have some special physics properties to make accidental deletion hard.
I like the basic idea though...

Haha, I like that one. A hole in the corner that pushes things forcefully away from it, meaning not only is it fun to throw things at (piles of items could make a nice fountain); you'd have to physically place things in it to delete them. =] -
this would work well, especially if you don't want to throw some things away. -
I have an idea. http://getsatisfaction.com/bumptop/to... -
Inappropriate?I agree. With a 3D recycle bin, it could maybe look more like a wastebasket than a recycle bin.
( I never did understand how it's being recycled...it's more like trash)
I’m lovin' the beta i got yesterday!
-
it's recycling the actual space on the hard drive so you can use it again, by destroying what you're getting rid of. -
Inappropriate?I rather use Shift+Delete :D

That bin looks great. I'm really liking BumpTop and will be sticking with it rather than checking out the competition, but I'd love to see a bin like that in the future. -

That picture is really cool! -
Inappropriate?Perhaps you could put it under BumpTop?
Might sound crazy... but I keep my real trash can under my desk.
BT is still an attempt to give a real look and feel to your desktop, just like in the real world. A key-combination could make you look down under the desktop and you could grab and throw your crumpled crap right down there...
Perhaps you could have a "take out the trash" function to replace "empty recycle bin" to give it another hint to reality. A swift throw-it-to-the-curb animation, swing it through the window,... I don't know, I'm just brainstorming here! ^_^
I’m thinking trash cans will rule the world one day!
-
How'd you post the video? -
Inappropriate?I really like the idea of having an underside to the desk. I guess the trick would be in doing this while keeping the interface from being too confusing for 3D novices.
How about a 'set-fire-to-the-trash' option for all those pyromaniacs out there? Mmm...fire...particle systems...volumetric smoke...directx... ;)
I’m confident
-
I've got an idea about that! http://getsatisfaction.com/bumptop/to... -
Inappropriate? How can i use the image?
When i change the icon, the new image will be shortly shown and then i see the old recycle bin. -
Inappropriate? You have to change the icon in the control panel (properties of desktop)
