Be open ...just open the code to world.
I would love to test it for Linux platform....and hope you will release the source code to the open source world...so that it can be better developed and integrated to a working desktop..which is not possible in a billion years with windows or mac desktop metaphor.as they don't like to share there code for development.

Inappropriate?I think it WONT be Open Source, primarily because it's been discussed that a commercial version is possibly planned for a final release.
Releasing the source code for a commercial product would be like giving away free food, costly.
But I want it to be Open Source and free!
I’m unsure

BumpTop could be open source and still be profitable, for example a company might pay to have it ported to their platform, like Mac, Blackberry, iPhone and more. -
Inappropriate? It is still possible to make money with Open Source Software. Just look at Canonical and Mozilla...

Inappropriate? We share your enthusiasm for the open source movement, but companies like Mozilla are the exception and not the norm (Mozilla used to sell commercial software as well, and just take a look at how many OS projects there are on sourceforge!). For the time being, we are looking at a more traditional business model, so that we have the opportunity to develop BumpTop a little further and reconsider these other options down the line.
