We recently pushed out an update to BumpTop where we tried to address this problem. Could you check if you still have the same problem launching shortcuts and let us know? Also, please let us know if you tried on Windows XP or Vista.
Thanks!!

I think we figured out the problem with the help of an astute user emailing us. Its stubborn Vista UAC. We are working on a fix for the next update. In the meantime you can turn off UAC to workaround it if you like. Warning: This means less annoying Vista Allow/Cancel screens in your face but also potentially less secure.
Here's a tutorial on how to do it:

Inappropriate?Hmm... not sure what could be causing this, but we'll look into it. A few q's:
-does it only happen for certain applications? does it happen only for applications and not individual files or folders? which files in particular?
-have these always been a prob or just recently?
-does a restart of BumpTop or your system help?
I’m curious
-
Inappropriate? This happens to me as well.
Folders always work, but from many tests, uTorrent, VLC, Notepad, Pidgin, and more don't open.
Some do, of course, like... umm... Firefox... And recycle bin.
Photos always work, folders always work, just most applications do not.
Not too much of an inconvenience, but it is annoying to have to right-click to open them.
I’m not annoyed, but not pleased.
-
Yes. Thats it. -
Inappropriate?I had the same thing happen to me. I doubleclicked a DosBox shortcut by accident but the program never opened.
-
Inappropriate?are these manually created shortcuts or ones put there by the auto-installer?
also, do they all physically live in the All Users\Desktop or the YourUserName\Desktop?
and this is vista right? -
1. These are manually created.
2. Yes they do.
3. XP -
Well at my it varies, I cannot start either one of 'em. Only SOME work.
I have XP.
I dont know about the all users and yourusername thing..
EDIT: CoD2 resides in All Users, and it doesnt work
CoD4 resides in the Angelo (my name), and it doesnt work either -
Inappropriate?all of the icons on my desktop are installed from installers. i am having this problem as well as getting the error like in Error messages when double clicking on Microsoft Office One Note desktop Shortcut... is there any way to fix this yet?
auto-installer
XP
user/desktop
I’m confused

Inappropriate?I think I found the solution to this issue! If you rename a non working shortcut (press F2 while selecting it) and putting .lnk after it, it works for me!
I’m happy becuase I found the solution for this issue
-
that didnt do it for me... -
Check what version you are using. It works for me in v.1254. (Press F1 in Bumptop) -
same -
If you have version 1254, and you run a shortcut, what do you get? Do you just get the animation or do you get something else too? Like a messagebox. -
it really depends, but on most of them i just get the animation. on some i get an error like in the "Error messages when double clicking on Microsoft Office One Note desktop Shortcut..." thread -
Then just rename it and add .lnk to it. Maybe it'll helps. Tell me if it worked. -
Inappropriate?Nope, No go for me either. I tried it with three different filetypes.
-
Strange. But I cannot test it since somehow all of my shortcuts are working, sorry. -
Inappropriate?I forgot to mention that I am using Vista
-
I think that does not really matter. (Are you elektrikjesus on BumpForums?) -
Inappropriate?yes

shoot... i wonder if you have service pack 3 which may have some UAC like features. When you run the same shortcuts that don't work in BumpTop in your regular desktop do you get any dialog boxes from windows asking you for permission to run them? And if so how many? -
I have SP3 and I dont get that sorta screens. Also, aint it called DCS? (Doesnt catch shit) -
Inappropriate?Thank You. Turning off UAC and renaming 100+ links on my desktop and in the desktop folders worked. There has to be some way to script the renaming into the program.
-
hmm... just turning off UAC didn't do the trick? You shouldn't have to rename the files to make this work. -
If the shortcut is called Program, you rename it to Program.lnk and then it will work. -
hmm.. YoungScripter, in XP do you have it set to hide or show file extensions? Do other file extensions show for you in BumpTop? -
Other files show the extensions. Shortcuts dont, even if I add .lnk after it. But before I added it I got some strange error message I never got before, then the animation appeared.
Now I changed the name and added .lnk after it and then it worked just fine. But I still don't see any .lnk after the shortcut's name. -
YoungScripter, can you give more detail on the strange error msg you got? Thanks. -
Inappropriate? Can any of you tell me whether the full filename of the shortcuts that don't launch actually ends with ".lnk".
A good way to do this through the command prompt. Start>Run, CMD. Navigate to the Desktop folder, than type in 'dir'. Do the failing shortcuts have .lnk in their path?
Thanks,
a -
Yes, they are! I found some failing shortcut yesterday and I tought I'd let it stay and now I checked and they are ending with .lnk -
just to be clear, even the items ending in .lnk in the CMD didn't work for you here?
