Cannot register beta, problem with internet.
Dear forum users,
I have a small problem with my copy of BumpTop. When I go to register it with my activation code, it says It cannot connect to the internet, and to please enter the code again. I am sure it is the correct code, and I'm sure that I'm connected to the internet.
Any feedback is appreciated.

Zamadatix - this is obviously a bug and we'd appreciate some help diagnosing it first. Could you go into C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Bump Technologies, Inc.\BumpTop\settings.json and change the value of the variable "overrideIEProxySettings" to true, "httpProxyUrl" to an empty string (i.e. ""), and "proxyMode" to 0 ? Let me know if you have any problems. Could also let me know what these values were before you changed them?

Inappropriate?Maybe your firewall is blocking it by default, try turning off your Windows Firewall (It has flaws anyway..), and make sure any other firewall is not blocking it.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem as well. I'm behind a Corporate Firewall however, so I cannot turn it off.
Usually if it is through something like Port 80 I can access fine, is BumpTop activation using a different port to access the server? -
Inappropriate?@Magmaa, @Omniblast: Do you use a proxy server to connect to the internett?
@Stever: We're going to add proxy support to the next release, which should be out by the end of this week. Could you hang in there until then, and download a new installer then?
Thanks for the feedback y'all!
-
Inappropriate? We have a new version out with proxy server support, download it from the website and let us know how it works!
-
Inappropriate?Hey, I got a problem, but I use wireless, so I don't know what to do about this, any help here?
I’m sad
-
What's the error message that you get? -
Inappropriate?Hi I also have the same problem but I allowed my firewall to unblock this program! Still it won't work!
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? Please post the error messages, or ideally screenshots of your problems. Its very difficult to fix without specific details on the problem.
We just released a new version 2 days ago (Beta 13) which should get around any proxy issues for example, so perhaps re-download and give that a try.
Thanks :D
-
Inappropriate?Hi.... I got around my problem by repairing the installation. Bumptop is awesome!
I’m excited!
-
Inappropriate?i have the same problem too... and i turned off the firewall... but the same message keeps popping up...
-
What message you are getting? Are you testing BumpTop from a machine behind a proxy? -
i am not testing through a proxy, it is just my home computer, and i double checked the invitation code, ive tried it at least 20 times... what else can it be? -
Inappropriate? What message are you getting? Can you email us your invite code to feedback@bumptop and we can look into it?
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem with Beta 14: "unable to connect to internet" and the program continues to ask for invite code. So I installed Beta 12 and I have success.
-
Inappropriate? After installing Beta 12, you should be able to upgrade to Beta 14 automatically on next launch of BumpTop.
Do you have any sort of proxy/firewall/security software setup that might be interfering with BumpTop connecting to the internet?
Some people have said resetting their internet connection fixes the authentication problem. -
Inappropriate?I tried resetting my connection, but without success. So I installed beta 14 on my desktop pc and I had no problems.
Maybe there is a problem with 64 bit version of Vista since I have it on my laptop? -
Inappropriate?I don't think its a 64bit version issue. We have tested the 64bit version to work. Some of our inhouse test machines are 64bit. Hmm... not sure what the problem is.
Right now we are having some ISP server trouble, so it might be a bad time to test this. Hope to have it cleared up in a few hours. -
Inappropriate?Turned off my Privoxy. Turned off the firewall. Restarted computer. And I still have the same problem. BT informs me that it is unable to connect to internet. I enter my invite code and the same dialogue box appears. This is Beta all right.
-
Inappropriate?Hey Jay, are you using 64bit Windows?
Also, perhaps you could try uninstalling Beta 14 and try with Beta 12 when we had a slightly different authentication mechanism.

(invite code required)
Can you give that a try and let us know?
Thanks,

Inappropriate?i have the 64 bit xp and will try the above link
edit beta 12 works, ill try upgrading to 14 and see if it works that way (hoping i dont have to renter my code) -
Inappropriate?okay i have bumptop 12 running and it says on start up would i like to upgrade, i obviously hit yes but then i wait restart (assuming it finished of course) and it ask me to update again. is this me or the program?
-
Inappropriate?i realized i had to uninstall 14 first lo, so i did hat but on update it request your code again... darn it :(
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hang on, so are you back where you started? You've got beta14 installed and its asking you for your invite code but then telling you "you're not connected to the internet"?
-
Inappropriate?yeah, i installed 12 upgraded to 14 (logically thinking it wouldnt ask for my code again..) and now i have 14 and it wont connect to the server

Inappropriate?sure, i will have to later though because around 5 i go to my mom gets otu of work and i go to her house and my 64 bit machine is at my dads, ill have it tomorrow unless someone beats me to the punch)
-
Inappropriate?yep works great, thank you very much. if you need any other testing with 64 bit systems i'm willing to do it (i spend a lot of time programming but not as much as you guys do :P)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?i noticed when i run bump top 400mb of my ram disappears, doe sit really use that much ram or is this another problem? (before it was using 200 mb total)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? The more images you have on your desktop, the more RAM that will be taken up. However, Vista's memory management is such that a task may report a higher number, but a lot of that is unused and given back to the system on request.
-
Inappropriate?I followed Mike's suggestions and I had success. Now I have beta 14 working. Thanks! :)
-
Inappropriate?i have only the default picture on the wall all the settings to low as they go and 1 row of icons on my normal desktop on xp yet my ram is still 400 higher (if only my computer was the stock market) but in my vista machine it runs only 100 higher on the highest settings for graphics available.
also in beta 12 no my 64 bit computer it ran without a hitch but in beta 14 im experiencing EXTREME lag and jsut leave it closed because it slowed things down so much.
any idea whats up?
update: couldn't you just use the hard drive to cache all the images since they arnt being used much when a window is in front of them (which is most of the time)? i mean 400 mb is an awful lot on my machine with 512mb ram... especially since nothing in the scene is changing.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Would it be possible for you to tell us the exact framerate? Do find the framerate switch to BumpTop and push F3. Then move an icon around and around and tell us what "Frames Per Second" says.
I'm curious how much it has changed on the 64bit machine from b12 to b14. Also be curious to know CPU usage on both.
Re: Caching images to disk. Yes, thats what the OS does for us for all apps and unused memory. So even though it reports 400MB it doesn't mean thats all physical RAM, some may be using virtual memory on your hard disk. -
Inappropriate?Regarding the "not connected to internet issue".
I had the same problem on first trying to launch BumpTop. What solved the problem was to exit BumpTop (without it activated) and to launch it again.
That solved the problem real fast. -
Inappropriate?sometimes cache randomly goes to 900mb and never clears even if i exit (i only have 512mb (truly 384) of ram so that really sucks... but today i opened bumptop and im getting a average of 50 fps, ill tell if it slows down and what i was doing if it happens again (i run on a VERY stripped version of xp so ill be able to tell)
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I had this problem when was trying to install the latest beta. After I type in the invitation code, nothing happens for a while then a box pops up and says cannot connect to internet.
Then I installed beta 12, it required .Net framework >2.0 (latest beta worked with .net 2.0), so I got .Net 3.5 and it installed. Upon launch, my firewall pops up (didn't happen with latest beta) and asks if I want to allow or not.
So I think the problem is that the latest beta doesn't quite register with the firewall, or maybe it goes though IE settings? I never used IE before installing latest beta (so it wasn't registered with firewall), but even after I enabled it, latest beta still didn't register with firewall.
Now it works! (beta 12)
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I tried both beta 14 and beta 12 again:
eeePC 1000H, WinXP SP3 32bit, Zone Alarm Firewall
- Beta 12 works good, it registered with firewall
- Beta 14 doesn't register with firewall and is a no go
- Tried both wired university LAN DHCP and wifi WEP university DHCP
acer aspire, WinXP SP3 32bit, Zone Alarm
- Both beta 12 and 14 registered with the firewall, but neither one works
- using university LAN DHCP
- program such as bit torrent runs perfectly using the same LAN
Trying Mike's solution on my Acer
Original:
"httpProxyUrl" : "0¤b ̧£b",
"overrideIEProxySettings" : false,
"proxyMode" : 2,
New:
"",
true,
0,
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!
I will try the same thing on my eeePC tomorrow, it should work as well.
Yep, it works on my eeePC as well, but httpProxyUrl looked a bit different
I’m happy

Inappropriate? For anybody who had a problem with connection and the settings.json fix worked, could you please help us out?
I'd like you to go to your settings and change the settings back to automatically use the IE proxy settings. Then, could you look in the settings.json file and tell me the values of the following three variables:
"httpProxyUrl" : ???
"overrideIEProxySettings" : ???
"proxyMode" : ???
Just tell us what you see where I put the question mark. You can change the values back after that, I just wanted help in more permanently solving this problem. Also, if you see a file in the same directory called proxy_errors_log.txt, could you please email it to us?
If you already did this, thanks a lot!!
-
Inappropriate?I can't get the beta to run - it brings up the same "can't connect" popup. In a way I'm happy tosee this affects Vista users on a pc also - as I tried to get bumptop up on my parallels based Vista. Anyway, I have "Use IE proxie settings" marked but still it does not like me.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hi Tok,
Are you behind a proxy? There is a problem with non-proxy users which we are trying to fix for this next release. In the meantime, could you try the following:
Go into C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Bump Technologies, Inc.\BumpTop\settings.json and change the value of the variable "overrideIEProxySettings" to true, "httpProxyUrl" to an empty string (i.e. ""), and "proxyMode" to 0 ? Let me know if you have any problems.
Could also let me know what these values were before you change them? This will help us a lot in resolving this problem for the next release.

Inappropriate?Hi Mike,
seems this has done the trick. With Beta 15 I could install and have played a bit with BumpTop. Amazing, so far... :-)
BTW: I found a PDF to be shown without a logo. But it was just a test with one file so far.
Regards
tok

Inappropriate?Hi Mike,
Ive installed version 15 yesterday, ive had the proxy problem, well it just wasnt accepting it (like it couldnt connect to the internet.) I use Vista and IE8v2 beta, long story short, ive found out that when i keep the setting window open for the proxy and filling my proxy details in, press apply and keeping the settings window OPEN the connection works, when i save and close the window the connection doesnt work, my IE settings have the proxy parameters, so manual or auto should both work (proxy here is isa:8080) anyway, filed a report for it.
another problem is that when i fire up a new IE window (not tab) it freezes for 10 seconds before i can do anything with it, this started after installing bumbtop and continues if bumbtop is running or shutdown. (also filed a report for it).
If you need more info please ask.
I’m amused/happy
-
Inappropriate? So, in IE, is that a manual proxy, or an auto proxy configuration script?
Could you try disabling the shell extension in settings, and see if the lag in IE continues? You may have to log out and log back in.
-
Inappropriate?Im using a manual proxy, its on a domain account btw. Everything is local administrator and i've got no roamin profile, also tested this on a local machine (eg not in a domain) same result.
Ill test the shell extension, however cant find it atm, dont really know where to look, ill google ;-)
See image for proxy settings. Hmm image upload not working, getting an object Error, i will retry later.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Mike,
Can you give me a push in the right direction ? cant seem to find where i can shut down the shell extension.
-
Inappropriate?Sure, go to the settings dialog, and uncheck the "Bump! This Folder" Explorer Toolbar option.
Could you confirm again that the internet works when the settings app is open, but not when its closed? And when it works, have you always filled in the manual parameters, or do the automatic IE settings work as well?
To test, try loading some new picture frames in BumpTop in each case (settings app open/closed). Be patient, it can take about 10 seconds to load a picture frame. :) Thanks for the help!
