Ideas/Things To Add For BumpTop
We all know BumpTop is the future of User Interfaces, but to make it more ergonomic, user friendly, and more "eye candy-ish" with the cool animations, design and pen flicks, some community ideas and input can inspire designers to add more.
List them here, be as creative as you want for it might spark something; I'll begin with mine:
---
1. Option for low or zero gravity for the icons, and maybe a subject "planet" they can obit around; for example, maybe I can create a Word Documents planet that all the Word Documents I would have out orbit around the planet.
2. Folders, Cabinets etc on the 3D canvas that would act the same way as a real file cabinet would (maybe multiple for different types of documents) (pretty much; office furniture and supplies that would be used normally in real life in the 3D desktop)
3. A toolbar on one of the walls showing open browsers that can be minimized or maximized with an animation
4. Quick search
5. Hangars on walls; maybe a quick launch or a favorites panel so that documents or files can be easily accessed without having the search through
6. Maybe an underwater effect; as if the 3D canvas was a fishbowl, and the files would float to the floor.
7. House of cards effect; files can be building blocks
8. External devices appear on the 3D canvas and can be dragged etc as well as files dragged to it
9. Maybe if the 3D canvas is square, each face of the square can be used to contain a certain type of file; for example, PDFs on Face 1, Word Documents on Face 2, Music on Face 3, Photos on Face 4, Videos on Face 5, and Games on Face 6.
10. Pens, pencils etc to make notes on the Canvas.
11. Widgets and a widget hotkey
12. Minimize and maximize animations
Feel free to list any of yours and be as creative as you want!

Inappropriate?heres an addition, thanks to -|steve|-:
Have opened windows also with a 3D desktop feel; maybe when you minimize a window, it can become an icon on a special plane of the desktop you can maximize or throw around like other files.
I’m excited.
-
Inappropriate?I would like to see shortcuts integrated into the gesture system. For example, drawing a star could open up the web browser.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?oh and I saw the YouTube vid on the Stanford Cool Product Expo; in the final build, I suggest that you shouldn't include the taskbar at the bottom; this really takes away from the 3D feel.
I’m so very exited to be helpin out Mr. agarawala wit BumpTop
-
I have to disagree, although it would help with the experience, it would seriously hinder my productivity to be without the taskbar, window list, and start menu. -
BumpTop gives you whichever you choose. If you've hidden your system taskbar in windows then BumpTop respects that choice. If you've left it visible then we keep it that way. We don't force a different option upon the user as a default. -
Giving the user the option to show or hide the taskbar really is the way to go. I remember how lost I felt when I first used MS Word in Vista. I knew what wanted but not how to get to it. It was very frustrating, and I think a 3D Bump world with none of the conventions to which users are accustomed would be more frustrating still. -
Inappropriate? How do you figure these things out YoungScripter? You're good!!
We haven't even documented half the features you've discovered.
Also,
>> 5. Hangars on walls; maybe a quick launch or a favorites panel so that
>> documents or files can be easily accessed without having the search through
You can drag any file/photo up to the wall to remember it for later.
>> 4. Quick search
Just start typing and it highlights anything that matches the substring your'e typing. Otherwise type Ctrl+F to search all filenames.

Haha! Thanks Anand! -
Inappropriate?I would like to be able to customise the walls with pictures as wallpaper. Also is it possible to be able to view the side walls direct on at a distance.
I like the effect of the room when I'm looking at picture frames on the back and side walls and it made me think that a cool screensaver type setting would be to have a rotating view from the centre.
I’m excited about the possibilities that Bumptop brings.
-
Yeah, that'd be cool!!
Also, what about a graphical configuration editor? To make it a bit easier...? -
Good ideas! We think customizable walls would be cool too and its on our todo list.
If you double-click on the walls you can zoom into them to get the sort of view I think you're talking about. Double-click back on the floor to get to the regular view
In terms of customizing wall textures, would you want to set each wall to a specific texture, or just 1 texture for all the walls? -
Thanks. I would probably use one texture for the side walls and a different one for the back wall.
When I double click on an image and then scroll through them with the arrows keys, and the camera travels from one side wall to the other, was what gave a really good 3d impression of the walls and desktop. This made me think of having the camera in the center looking at the back wall, and being able to pan it around to view the side walls. -
Cool. Remember you can zoom the view to just the back wall by double-clicking on it! -
Hmm... when you zoom to one of the walls, you can stick piles on it and they stay just as though they were sitting on shelves. Nice feature.
Although when I fan out the pile it falls back on the ground instead of fanning out on the wall. That would be really good for scattering a pile of pictures on a wall. -
Inappropriate?Another thing I would like to see added would be a timer option for the picture frames. The majority of the time BumpTop doesn't use a lot of CPU power, but when my 7 picture frames all change at the same time it uses up nearly all of my CPUs power. This could be offset by being able to set the picture frames to change at different times, or maybe in a set order.
-
Good idea! For now you can manually tweak this in the settings.xml. (SysTray>Settings XML). g.photoFrameImageDuration is the tag. Default is 30seconds, but this is a global value for all the frames.
Curious, what sorts of frames do you have up on your walls. Do all 7 point to folders on your HD or do some point to RSS feeds/Flickr? -
Thanks again. I currently only use picture folders on my HD, a different folder for each Frame. The transition of the pictures is very smooth, just requires most of my CPU to do it all at once. -
If I do it at 1 picture my CPU gets up to 20% (single core) in the transition of the picture. -
Inappropriate?1,3,5,7, and 8 would awesome to see. Even if it is in a later build.
12 seemed repetative of 3. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the suggestions! Just wanted to mention we have an account on CrowdSound-- it's a site where you can vote on and make suggestions for BumpTop: http://crowdsound.com/widgets/popular... We have already implemented some of the most popular suggestions!

Inappropriate?"1. Option for low or zero gravity for the icons, and maybe a subject "planet" they can obit around" - Yes! Planet icons with orbit icons would be an awesome way to interface with data in 3D space. 3D icons in and of themselves would be great.
"7. House of cards effect" - the internet will always generate new ways to procrastinate :P
"9. Maybe if the 3D canvas is square, each face of the square can be used to contain a certain type of file" - Building objects out of files is an interesting concept.
Another thing. Does anybody else know about this:

It would make the BumpTop more visceral, intuitive, and cool if I could pinch and throw instead of click and drag.
I’m interested.
