LUA based scripting
Also, it would be great if you could tell us a little bit about the functionality we will be able to use then. Thanks!
The more people who like this idea, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate? Our plans for an API are still open to discussion. We have a few ideas we'd like to provide but I'd like to hear what the community would like to do with it.
-
Awsome! I'd love to create some scripts for Bumptop. Hope to be able to do so soon! -
Just to be clear, It will still be a while before we release an API. We need to generate enough traction with our beta to make the API for our platform interesting enough to developers.
Still, we are canvasing for ideas for what people would want to include in that API so fire away! -
Inappropriate?Hmm can you explain me a little what you are meaning with API's? Are you talking about creating a reference to a Bumptop dll file and accessing functions by that?
In my opinion I prefer lua files which you can execute from the local application (Bumptop) other than an external application (which you have to write yourself).
So what about if you have some folder called \Scripts\ in the C:\Program Files\Bumptop where you can make lua files which are automatically executed by Bumptop itself? Don't forget to create some functions called "addEventHandler" which you can connect to a Function..!
Thats my opinion, and I think the easiest way scripting. This way more unexperienced scripters can make their own scripts, too.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Hey YS!
I must have missed the email in my crowded inbox. When I say API i mean something where you can access/customize bits of BumpTop via some scripting language like Python (most likely candidate).
I’m happy
-
That means I'll have to learn Python then? -
Python looks like a promising language! I think I'll take a look into it, and tell you what I think about it later. ;-) -
Python is pretty amazing. Definitely recommend learning it, its super easy to learn and really powerful. -
Yep! I just started learning it, its simple, yet powerfull! There are a lot of modules to import so there are a lot functions. I hope you take this is a scripting language for Bumptop! Are you going to make it with files? So.. C:\Program Files\Bumptop\Scripts\myScript.py ... Also can I make some kind of wiki for "Bumptop Scripting" ? Would be nice I think! -
Its still very early in development so we haven't made many decisions on it yet. For that reason a wiki might be a little early, but its up to you. You might have better luck with a getSatisfaction post or something -
I see. I think I just have to be patient then! -
Inappropriate?Python is definitly the language to use since it surpasses LUA in everything from simplicy and communication. Plus it's faster due to it's use of byte code... Keep us informed on that API Anand

I agree! -
No. MTA: San Andreas Deathmatch -
Inappropriate?Bah... Script for Unreal, it's a lot cooler. :P Lua for PSP was fun though, I made whole OSes with it, and they ran beautifully. But you must move on! Give openFrameworks a spin, you'll like it.
-
I am currently learning Python and Perl. They both seem to be an extremely easy to learn language, and there is a lot of documentation on the internet. -
Inappropriate?Python is good all around language since every OS supports it on some level. Perl needs an interpreter and is mostly used on a server. Perl is like a hardcore version of Python, but it was created earlier, so essentially Python is a more flexible Perl. In all honesty try openFrameworks, there is tons of documentation and the forums are quite active if you have problems. Plus I dev it so you better use it :P
-
Just saw the website of OF. Looks awsome, but I dont really know C++! I cannot even make a basic hello world application in C++. -
Inappropriate?you're a dev on OF? Cool. Do you know Zach Lieberman and posse? I met Zach when he was in Toronto for an art show. Cool guy.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Hello,
Have you already tried experimenting with scripting features?
( I know that its not neccesery right now but I ask ) -
Inappropriate?@Anand: Yea I work under Zach and the rest. I work with people from the Cubit project, from oF, Automata Duck, stuff like that. Oh and I redid Zach's workshop that he did on animation in Toronto, fun stuff. Still not gonna let me work for ya?
-
Work with us with a BumpTop API? We'd love to have that once we open it up further down the road. I'd be happy to talk about more immediate stuff too, email us at info@bumptop.com -
Does that mean it wont be Python anymore? -
Its still in development and Python is the front runner at the moment, but that could change. -
Inappropriate?I think it would be a bit difficult to make Python script for the BT app if there is no COM interface :P... If you manage to do it anyhow i'll be pleasantly surprised. Check out some tuts on the net for building the interface properly.
