Multiple Rooms (Multiple Desktops)
Since Bumptop is designed with a cubicle or room-like appearance, it would be really great if we could have multiple rooms. Each room could be furnished uniquely (wallpapers and shortcuts) so we could have different setups for whatever reasons. For instance the user could set up a "Games Room" which would contain all of their gaming shortcuts etc.
Multiple desktops have been around for quite a while now, so there's no reason why Bumptop shouldn't add this great feature.
We also need to be able to lock the position of icons. It's becoming increasingly annoying when you grow an item and it moves all ones that you spent time placing.

That's a cool idea. I like it! :) -
Yes, i like this idea, but the doors would have to be moveable and customizable...
that shouldn't be TOO hard... and they have to be entered by double click :P -
THIS! -
Great! We should be able to add icons to the door... Right? Anyway, Great Idea! -
great idea! -
I was thinking the same exact thing. perhaps not even doors, but an object of your choosing, that can be rendered in the same area. -
Inappropriate?Or why not simply chose a folder and treat that as a separate desktop?!?
-
Yeah I currently do that at the moment but it's not really the same thing.
I also left out a major factor of multiple desktops...
Current desktop switchers have the ability to move applications and windows between them, which means for those of us who might have a lot of windows open at once, we can keep the taskbar from becoming cluttered.
I'm hoping BumpTop consider this idea, because I'd definitely go pro in that case. -
Inappropriate?I do believe the original idea is to make it look like you have a "real" desktop, not a "room". You could create a very office-like environment if you'd be working with "real" cubicles. Use a hotkey to zoom out from your current 'digital cubicle', slide to the next and zoom back in so it takes up your full screen again. I'm afraid all this will take up much system recourses though, then again, it's a feature that can be disabled, right? ;-)
I’m thinking!

Inappropriate? Why limit yourself to a reproduction of a real world environment, when the computer devoid of physical boundaries allows for a lot more, starting from layerin to complex support functions. For instance if you are dealing with several projects, you'd usually store the respective data in separate folders. While in the real world spatial constraints hold you to make the best use of your office (not just the desk) the computer theoretically allows using multiple desktops, one for each of these projects/folders.
In addition when a document is relevant in multiple contexts you can keep it saved in a single location and simply use a referal like a shortcut in the respective contexts.
The situation gets even more interesting if you consider a cooperative process when it comes to a 'shared desk' similar to a shared whiteboard only with persistent positional structurings beyond individual sessions. Yeah that'd require tedious awareness mechanism and the likes, but the point is: the computer can go beyond physical restricitons why trap yourselves in them?!?
I’m dreaming ;)

Yes, the computer can go beyond physical restrictions, therefore we can have (but not trap ourselves in) "unlimited" multiple rooms, which serve the same function as "folders" as you have mentioned. Don't argue for the sake of argue... -
Inappropriate?@Kevin: Soooo I shouldn't do what you're doing? Interesting :D
But well you got my point, even summed it up adequatly. I still don't think it cannot be that bad that you had to read a few more words than in your average tweet.
I’m amused

Inappropriate?I agree, support for dual monitors with multiple rooms, or a single room that spans multiple desktop is a definite needed addition. I also like the idea of multiple rooms through doors. For example, you could have one room/desktop that is for work, and another for personal. Makes a lot of sense for people who use their computers for many purposes and it truly is the next step for your product from what I can see.

Inappropriate?I think doors would be a great idea but how about on top of different rooms connected by doors also having the option to set a password for a door if you want to sort of like a key.
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate?I love the idea, and I think it'll be included in BumpTop.
I’m confident this will be included

Inappropriate?Technically, If you have an app like CubeDesktop, You can assign each of the desktops a shortcut key. So, All you have to do is create a new icon, assign it the same hotkey as the desktop you wish. Then give the shortcut an icon, like a door in this case. and put the door on a wall. So when you doubleclick on the door, at automatically switches to that desktop.
Use multiple doors for all the desktops is you want. Personally though. I will stick w/ my MT gestures for switching desktops.
I will try and make these this week. and post them here.
-
Sorry I forgot to mention. You will have to use AutoHotkey to create the shortcuts -
Inappropriate? Here is my try on this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ1_pN...
It's just a concept, showing, how one could move between "work" and "play" rooms.
It changes the theme, open windows and a few predefined icons (showing games instead of documents).
It doesn't run very well, because it's using Autohotkey to change the theme and because icons lose their properties (size, position and icon), once their hidden attribute is set.

Leon, this is fantastic! It looks great and I'm sure, with the right GUI, it'd be exactly what people have been asking for! -
Inappropriate?Thanks for the praise!
The biggest issue here is that all of the icons are loosing their properties when changing rooms.
For this to work properly, it would require, that the icons would keep their BumpTop properties, even when hidden.
I’m happy

You could solve this by using two scene.bump files i think. -
That didn't work. I think scene.bump only gets read on startup. -
Inappropriate?love this idea, i do a lot of creative stuff and would love having different desks available for my all my projects without out having to 'clean up' each one before I switch to a new one. The flexibility of the bump top concept is awesome. Though the world has moved into a digital age there's no reason to lose the 'feel' for what we do. Working off a 'desk' rather than a flat screen is about the experience of existing in my electronic work space.
I’m thankful
