Poll: Pins, or no Pins?
Hey, we're considering taking out the blue pins that appear when icons are pinned to the wall. But it can make things look like they floating and look odd. What do y'all think?

Inappropriate?i think it should be removed but more ike replaced the pins i find bulky and in the way if there was an alternative way ( such as a drop menu ) to display difrent ways to put them on the wall example " hanging, none, thumb tack "
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I think there should be an option form them to be turned on an off. And maybe you could apply your own skins to them. You already have the pins made, why take them off.

Inappropriate?I don't see anything wrong with the pins but I'm with Mike.
-
Inappropriate?no pins!
-
Inappropriate?I don't particularly like the pins, but perhaps that option to disable/enable them.
-
Inappropriate?would be nice with the option to turn them off, yes.
that way people can use them if they want -
Inappropriate?Option to turn them on or off would be best.
If they can be on or off for icons of our choice, that would be best.
Like we would want to hang a window graphic without pin but a PDF document with pin. -
options are bad and represent weak product designers. good defaults emphasize well thought out designs. -
I generally agree with this philosophy. We want a really good set of defaults. Options make sense for some stuff but not all. You don't want a sea of options like MS Word or IE that are useless to all but a specific few users. -
That is the point I want to make. The pins are useful but not to all users.
I have had a lot of conversation on desktops.
I started a community about it, made a website on it, opened a public "submit your desktop" gallery.
One thing that every user wanted was customization. Customization = options to modify things.
If you want defaults, I understand your view, but according to my knowledge, people want to make things "their".
Like why is LiteStep more preferred as a Windows shell than the default one? Because you can customize it to what you want to.
SharpE, another great shell, is not so popular only because it has (or at least had till version 6) only one default skin.
So, my point: options are good.
Of course, I am just suggesting, you may have more knowledge than me. -
But I agree with avand, there is such a thing as TOO much customisation. NO one would want to sift through a list of 1000 different pins or photoframe styles. Imagine if Firefox came with ALL the extensions already installed, it would be a hassle to even set up the preferences, and probably no one would use it. So I think, pins should be a part of a downloadable theme as an extension or addon if at all. Imho the majority of people here either don't care or don't like them, while not that many people really want them them. So why not just get rid of them. -
Inappropriate?3D pins ;-)
-
Inappropriate?yes, like: right click an icon on the wall, go "more..." and select like' "remove pin"
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?exactly
-
Inappropriate?add an option!
-
Inappropriate?I'm with Mike. Give the user the option to chose - Pins or No Pins, Small-Medium-Large, Pick a color or use your own.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I'm with Mike, too.
There should be an option to turn the pins on or of and the ability to change their appearance.
For your question, Anand:
The Pins could be in 3D.
There could be an option to change their color and their size.
How about different styles like thumb tacks, nails, sticky tape etc.? -
Inappropriate?"any mockups of ideas for alternate pin styles? "
I am making some in illustrator right now. I made a basic pushpin in 3ds max but it is taking a long time to render on this crappy computer. -
Inappropriate?I think we must have the possibility to choose if we want a pin or not. but not too much options, it's only a pin, not the existence of life.
for the style, there could be as différent as you want, a star, a pin or a smiley (you didn't think of that ^^)
-
Inappropriate?Like a lot of the people here, I'm with Mike. Different pin styles would be nice, too; say large, medium, small, push-pin, clothing pin (you know: skinny, tiny ball), etc.
-
Inappropriate?Alright The pin rendered a while ago, if anybody doesn't have a dwf player you can download one at autodesk.com. I will also post a screen shot.

Dwf file: http://rapidshare.com/files/163267345... (I can email it to you if you want, because you don't like rapidshare.)

Nice. Some others were suggesting this style of pin but i'm not convinced. if you're willing it would be cool to see it mocked up at a smaller size and at different orientations you might see it at for things pinned up to the different walls.
cause i'm still not sure. thanks for taking the time though! -
not bad. i'm curious how it looks in the more default view though. and particularly when on the left or right walls. -
Inappropriate?I think BumpTop should just use this pin or a blue version of it and use it as default. You don't really need to customize it more than using a red or blue push pin.
-
not bad, but i think they're a lil' hard to distinguish. probably better than our basic blue dot though. :P
We'll need to wait for full 3D model support in later version to support it though. -
Inappropriate?I like Mr. Bumpy on your back wall! You must have kids
-
Nope! We're just goofy like that. Mr. Bump is our unofficial Mascot!! -
Inappropriate?I'd prefer to have a general option for disabling them. And the blue thingy is really ugly, maybe a more realistic looking, skinnable pin would look better.
-
Inappropriate?How about making them smaller?
How about an option for hiding them? this way you can have them or not.
How about random color push pins like they come in the box or an option to change the color. -
Inappropriate?normal thumbtacks get kinda boring
some of these options would look cool, i sometimes even resort to duct tape to get things on my wall >.<
i also suggest adding a shelves feature, it doesn't make much sense for a pile to be hanging, but instead resting on something else. A solution of this problem would to remove the pin and put something similar to another icon on the bottom but at a bigger size -
Inappropriate?Tape sounds awesome.
-
But I guess they appeal only to some people. -
Inappropriate?maybe you can make an animation of a pin shot into the object that you want to hang onto the wall
-
Inappropriate?I think a pin is too small of a customisation to bother with. Normally I'd think pins/tape/staples would be a cute addition, but default windows icons are too small, a pin would just be a few pixels big and on the desktop they'd just look like a single coloured dot. I don't think they're hideous, but I think the clean look of no pins is actually nicer. So a vote for no pins from me.

Inappropriate?Very useful files search engine. Indexoffiles.com is a search engine designed to search files in various file sharing and uploading sites.
