See the weather outside a window
Following. Haven't get the beta yet... unfortunately :-(
But the new 3D Desktop looks like a room for me. Whats about adding a window to this room? Okay thats not a big feature BUT now show the current weather outside through this window. Voilà it's a awesome feature. :-) You should choose the weather and display of any location based on a big world wide weather page and not just the US weather. Furthermore you should, if you like to, add more windows to see different weather locations. But you should also see the location displayed under or above the windows.
By displaying the weather I mean if its rainy you see the rain or raindrops on the window. If its sunny you see the bright sun, and so on...
This idea cross some seconds my mind... what do you think about it?
//added:
If you are not connected to the internet you see roller blinds or close-drawn curtains
//added:
And if you want to see the current temperature you should be able to place a thermometer on one of the room walls.
Just 2 ideas... something like a gadget

Inappropriate?Awesome!!
I think this could come under the widgets section that is planned for long term.
I’m loving this!

Inappropriate?Great idea! But I was wondering how it is possible to do that. This means that Bumptop will have to work with a weather service provider to get the weather. Also, people usually view the weather that's still a few hours or days away. In other words, someone should find a way to make future forecasting on the 3d desktop possible. I suggest adding a clock specifically for weather over the window, then adjusting it depending on the time for the weather that you wish to find out.
I’m someone who cant wait :P
-
But there are weather "RSS feeds" as well, such as those on Weather.com. It's free! -
For future forecasting, why not just make it like an application shortcut where if you click on it, it opens up your favorite web browser at the weather homepage. (Kind of like how the sticky note icon works: you can see the current sticky note, but to edit it, you just double click.) -
all you'd have to do is make a program that makes a screenshot of the weather. You make it a photo frame in bumptop, and it updates every 30 seconds or so. -
Inappropriate?in ubuntu they just connect to a weather site and give the info there it shouldnt be to hard to get it working.
I’m silly

Inappropriate?Awesome Idea!
But I'm wondering about intensive resource using...like JK3 said " This means that Bumptop will have to work with a weather service provider ". In order to overcome the problem It might be created a sort of "timer" to set an interval on wich the "weather widged" should check and update data.
About the "relativistic" problem exposed by JK3:
" Also, people usually view the weather that's still a few hours or days away "
This may be solved by giving users the ability to transmit by their pc to a common server the uodated weather situation on opening bumptop. Just like we do here when we post something and then we chose the apporpriate smiley. Immagine you launch bumptop and a small pop-up let's you choose and appropriate image for the weather ( a bright sun, rainy sky, foggy etc.).
I’m relaxed
-
Inappropriate?Well thanks for your ideas Nyxin. I like the one about user submission. However, it might be much easier if BT saves the weather onto one small file in your computer. It would still require association with a weather service provider, but if the file automatically updates from the website every time you are connected to the internet. Maybe once the data expires, a small message pops up indicating that you should update your weather file.
-
Inappropriate?Or if you have to update your weather data the window get blurred or the roller shutter are closed... there are many ways to handle it...
-
Inappropriate?all great ideas guys, but you worry to much i think. why not just let it connect to for example wetter.com and have live info on what ever destination you like. shouldn't that be possible....
but however. what do you think of using the weather info for the brigtness of the screen. like day and night.
wouldn't it be awsome if your screen tells you what time it is, without a watch, but through its brighness.... i mean, not exactly of course, but i think after a while you can guess as accurate as maybe 1 hour or so....
I’m very excited about this idea
-
Inappropriate?like the addition of blinds or shades that you could close even when you dont want the "weather outside a window" or if you dont want to use up some bandwith updating the weather
and making the window fog up when updating is cool too
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?perhaps a more general approach would be better. one should be able to allocate wall-space for more than just weather-windows. the concept of a "gadget", if interpreted by bumptop should have a more generic base class than that of vista sidebar gadgets.
i'm thinking that any application window should be able to open within one of these wall-allocated regions. maybe, for instance, you want to open a webinar and apply it to the wall on the left while you're doing other things on the desktop...(hey nobody cares about the video part of many webinars anyways, so the skewed image would be just fine. )
additionally, maybe you want to "hang" other dynamic items on your wall. sounds like a good place for a "digital photo frame" or several. maybe a clock, or an IM list, or an RSS ticker, or a feed from your webcam...which just might be pointing out your window!... all of these would be neat apps that would make sense to hang on your virtual wall space, and aren't confined to the idea of a "window".
I’m excited

Inappropriate?Haha, I got a genius idea!
Why wait for a gadget to be created when you can use what there already is?
There is already the changing photoframe, and there are those image-generators.
Like the one from Weather.com
Its not a changing image, but is is changing...
How genius is that!? -
Inappropriate?I will be accepting 5 people to test the Window 2 Weather widget. You MUST have the VIP version installed. And also give me a good enough reason that convinces me that you would actually help out.
Contact me at Jon@indakind.com and list your info and reasons.
Thank You,
Jon
I’m workin it

"You MUST have the VIP version"
Darn... and I was just about to ask. -
Inappropriate? This certainly sounds like a nice feature to add! my room is always dark (with gloomy light entering from an invisible window. It would be nice to see a change in ligh (daylight/night) as well as the weather !
I’m interested

Inappropriate?I have released the weather widget for testing. It doesn't matter what version of Bumptop you are using either.
Checkthem all out at http://Indakind.com for now until the test period is over -

Ehm.. we can download widgets from that website, but how do we install them? i clicked on the .exe file that comes in the .rar file, but an error appears, or nothing happens. I tried extracting the rar file into the bumptop installation folder, in the folder "widgets", but still nothing happens... -
Inappropriate?They go to the folder C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Bump Technologies, Inc\BumpTop\Widgets
If you don't have the widgets folder you must create it.
Let me know if this works. -

Inappropriate?Okay, this did load the widgets succesfully. I had to change some file and folder locations myself (due to some errors that occured such as "[file] could not be located in a specified location." I just had to make sure that file was where it says it's supposed to be, and it worked. (for W2W weather, i had to copy the folder "images", to outside of the "W2W.widget" folder - making sure that the same folder also stays inside "W2W.widget").
I’m happy and excited!
-
if you installed it correctly you should have the dir structure : C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Bump Technologies, Inc\BumpTop\Widgets\w2w.widget\ and this is where you should have the \data dir and the \images dir..
Then restart Bumptop for the widget to load up correctly.
You might have to undo any changes you made earlier for it all to work. -
That is what i had. When i tried that, i got the errors as described earlier, so that is when i made the changes myself.
I still have exactly as you described, however i had to add a copy of the "images" folder in the "\widgets" folder (so outside of the "W2W.widget" folder). -
@Yash91 - I have uploaded a newer version of the weather widget. Please download the widget, and replace it while Bumptop is not running.
Hope this helps. -
Yes! This works without any modification (until now) I dont know if it's just stuck on the last picture (i did delete the previous version i had and deleted any modifications i made myself). Ill have to wait till it gets dark to see if the picture actually changes. But until now, no error! -
Turns out, it was just stuck on the last picture. I have to double click to get "settings" and save my city again, only then does the picture refresh and change. -
It should refresh once an hour. we should change that to every 15 min. -
Now i also get an error saying: "Fog Weather Not FoundOKWarning". And the picture doesn't refresh anymore. It is on "night-clear" even though its daylight and foggy outisde. -
jon im having the same problems as yash91 fog weather not foundokwarning the picture dose not refresh -
We updated the weather widget, You can download it at http://indakind.com. It has the fog fix and it also has settings to set the refresh and timeout rate.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?it is probably a condition I have to add. Could you post the rest of the problems at: http://getsatisfaction.com/indakindde...
Thank You -
Yes. It works just fine now. Nicer interface for the settings screen too :P -

When would those of us who missed the testing stage be able to try it out? -
We should have the first release ready within a few weeks or whenever Bumptop is released. (what ever comes first) -
Inappropriate?I love the idea, but I think that you should be able to choose what weather you want displayed, if you don't really want to use the local weather feed.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?can’t produce the chinese?
-
I don't know about that. I will have to look into it and get back with you. I am leaning towards a system issue though. Possibly a .NET 3.5 language issue. -
We have no plans currently for multiple languages. We are a small two person shop and do not have the budget for translation. Sorry. -
Inappropriate? The store is up and running. You will find it here: http://widgets.indakind.com
Right now we are only putting up a few widgets that we have. there will be more added next week. and yes, The Weather widget is one that we have up.
You might need to refresh the page here and there. and If you are downloading and it stops, Pause then resume your download or try again.
We will get this problem fixed by next week.
Thank You.

Inappropriate? So, umm, this is a stretch, but how about looking outside your real window?
The whole reason we have online weather data is because looking outside a window to gauge the weather is a crappy way of getting informed, like on sunny days in early spring that are actually 35 degs F.
My vote is for customizable picture frames with RSS feeds that we can attach a hyperlink to. -
Why do you think this widget is free. We will be coming out with a pro version for less than $2 that will have a lot more data, including forecasting, current temperature, etc. -
Inappropriate?http://getsatisfaction.com/bumptop/to...
Its a work in progress, but it's functional.
Not through a window... yet.
-
Look up three posts. -
Inappropriate?Indakind has a widget that allows you to do that in BumpTop. But maybe they could include it in BumpTop, so we don't have to look for it?
I’m happy to tell about this
